I don't think there are anime musicals..but there are always anime's with music as a theme.

There are however live action "concerts" of love hina and i think a musical of sailor moon...if you're interested.

Sure they do.

A lot of World Masterpiece Theater animes done by Nippon Animation have musical inserts. You can try the "Trapp Family Singers" for starters.

I wouldn't know if this would be considered a "musical" but there were also three experimental "anime for adults" (known as "animerama") done in the early 1970s (obviously, way ahead of its time) by Mushi Pro. They are: "Thousand and One Nights" (1969), "Cleopatra" (1970) and "Kanashimi no Veradonna" (1973). A boxset is available for 12,000 yen.

Many early magical shoujo animes have musical-like inserts. Mainly, "Mahoutsukai Sarry" and "Himitsu no Akko-chan." You can also try Lalabel, Mako-chan, Ecchan, and Candy Candy.

And, don't forget the many Doraemon musicals. Many Doraemon movies have musical inserts with music done by famous songwriters and artists in Japan. I personally like "Daichouhen Doraemon ~Nobita no Kaitei Kiganjou~"

The seiyuus from the original "Sakura Taisen" did their own musical on stage before they disbanded. There are CDs that are out from the recordings that they performed on stage. I don't know where you can buy them in your country, but they do exist (and hopefully if they do international orders) you can buy them from Taisho Romando in Ikebukuro.

You are wrong. The latest one I'd recommend to buy and watch is 'Interstella 5555', the great work of Leiji Matsomoto. I've seen it in the cinema and I'm desperately waiting for a DVD release. This one is breathtaking!

The Hana Yori Dango "Movie" (1997) is sort of a musical. It's 30 minutes long. I don't think it's licensed right now but maybe after the series is finished it will come out.

No dice there. "Piano" doesn't do all that much with the music.

Interstella 5555 is already out on dvd. I hated the music though.

Watch Melody Mermaid or Full moon wo sagashite. Theres singing in there although the same songs are repeated a lot.

Furi Kuri is not a musical in any way shape or form. A better example would be something along the lines of Nerima Daikon Brothers(TV).

^ yup you're right FLCL defies no genre(since it has lots of it ) but it's music is cool though (maybe too exaggerated on Pillow's music )

BTW also adding Full Moon wo Sagashite and Princess Tutu <<< These 2 are musical and I'm sure of it and they're both nice....

Nerima Daikon Brothers is the first, and really ONLY anime that pops into my mind here. AWESOME show, though, if you don't mind your musicals being a little on the INSANE side. (:
