what i wanna know is who is the anbu member under that mask who couldnt get into the forceshield the sound4 created when oro was fightin with saturobi....

Some recent ANBU were Yamato and Sai (roots but still ANBU). Both pretty strong and capable. Plus, without numerous ANBU lives for canon fodder, who would kishi kill off during attacks (like Oro's)? It would have to be main characters which he wont do without a plot device.

they didnt seem scared of orochimaru or sound4 when they got there, only forceshield was stopping them from getting involve with the fight, but why didnt they try going through the forceshield from entering the building going through the roof......

I think Shino should become ANBU... he's so mysterious and all
Not to mention, with bugs as a weapon, he can stealthly set up someone to die without them ever realizing it... the sound-nin during the chunin prelims never saw it coming

Cause as it was mentioned earlier, the barrier must have also covered the below where oro and sarutobi were fighting... Sarutobi himself said that escape was impossible, and if he couldn't figure it out then no one could

It really would be nice to see them do something awsome... we are told they are awsome, we are told that some of the strongest ninja were former members... we were TOLD they were badass, but all we've ever SEEN them do is suck and die

This isn't particulary an Anbu thingy, this is a no-name ninja thingy.
The Anbu are meant to be measuring sticks to introduce powerful foe(s), hence they can't win.

So basically what you're saying is, shinobi exist in Konoha that can seal Kyuubi in a human, can suppress said demon's powers yet can't get through a barrier devised by 4 kids? Meh.

Appart from the Hokages or main characters you never hear or see anything good about the others (but when they fail you hear or see things about it).

It's always like this...even in real life. Which means they rarely screw up.

And it is true....ANBU seems fearless:
- Kakashi (former ANBU) was scared to death when he faced Orochimaru (yeah he was in a 1on1 situation)
- Sai wasnt really scared of Orochimaru, treated Sasuke as outcast (i agree with him and his comments)

Besides (my avatar) was a great moment ....within that war ANBU succesfully defended the feudal lords...(you didnt hear anything about that )

yes, but the ANBU would be more effective doing this if we could see them kicking some ass... actually seeing ninja kick ass is much more convincing of their strength then just hearing about them

Would it really be so bad for them to like, kill off a whole bunch a strong sound-nin and BEFORE getting wiped out by someone like Kabuto?

first off, Ichimaru was talking about them going through the barrier by going around it, not actually breaking through it...
Second, you are correct, afterall the 3rd hokage himself said escape was impossible, and if the 3rd hokage couldn't break out, then damn near noone could break it... i call plot device on that though... very meh...

The reason why the Anbu appear to suck is simple. Because, they are only called out when powerful foes appear. So in comparison quite obviously they'll lose. However, most of you do have a point, for specialists they aren't as impressive as they appear to be. But despite this that doesn't mean much of anything. People like Yamato, Itachi, and Kikashi were all Anbu members. So its not like everyone is weak. It's just that, like in everything theres a hierarchy of strength. The one's that were killed easily were probably the weakest ones. Where as the purple haired girl and her group were most likely amongst the strongest. And anyway a title doesn't really mean much. We've all seen firsthand how much the chuunin suck via the konoha invasion. But on the other hand, most of the rookie 12 are all chuunin, but we know they are way above that level. Especially Naruto who is a genin that could probably take on an Akatsuki member by himself.

That would kick ass of course.
The problem is that your scenario is almost the only possible one since in this show there isn't low level bad guys.
The huge cast of secondary characters make this scenario even less likely because Kishimoto would rather quickly show rookies and their families kicking some asses aside of the main battle rather than no-name Anbu.

Anbus in this discussion are grossly underated , Anbu arnt that bad we make the comparision of ANBU to sanins and powerful Jonin .Itachi Kakashi Yamatao were ANBU Taichos once . Sai is also Anbu ( Root ANbu ) technically Sai maybe weak compared to Sauckay , but Sai or the rest of Anbu arent Ino or Sakura or even future Hokkage Konohamaru
