Are we talking like like? Because personally I think we can count the number of viable legit love interests on one hand!

If loads of the girls are a bit smitten with Negi then it's obviously down to lack of choice (if they're exclusively straight that is). And we could say slightly lazy writing on Akamatsu's part - in that the only way to flesh out other/side characters is to yet again make them crush on Negi. Not exactly profound storytelling.

What I like(d) about Negima was that it actually depicts some close male&female friendships, and trust without romantic attachment. There might be a 'soft spot' in there, but I don't think some of them who are close to him (e.g. Setsuna, Kaede, Konoka, Ku Fei, Kazumi, Paru etc) are actually interested in being Negi's 'number 1 girl' at all.

Setsuna and Konoka have one odd relationship . I can't pinpoint exatcly what is it that they want.
But you did mention "Akamatsu" and we know he is good at making the whole "harem" be interested in that one semi-loser dude. Expect this time Negi's a 10 year old kid , who kicks more ass then 96.9% of Harem protagonist I've ever seen...so yeah .
As for Ku Fei and Paru....it's maybe only a matter of time ? kinda like how it took Mokoto 3/4 of Love Hina to realize she wanted Keitaro . I suppose the closer they become to him , the easier an attraction can be born ? especially with Ku Fei ? but then again , she sees him as her pupil and will do it for a long time.
Kaede ? i don't know , i somehow got the feeling she's interested in Negi..beyond the friendship status.
and Kazumi , well Kazumi is unreadable as well.
I suppose only time will tell us ?
I don't think they're all gonna "oh fall for the chams of Negi" right now . Just give him a few 5 - 6 more years :P

When I say 'viable' I was actually thinking more of girls who have a decent chance of actually ending up with an older Negi. So I'd take off the robot and Ayaka for sure.

And never in 209 chapters have I considered Konoka or Setsuna romantically interested in Negi, and there is no evidence in my eyes to suggest anything beyond 'instigated-banter' (via Chamo, or 'oh isn't adult Negi lush!, which is factual/deflective) or the general affection they have for him. That evidence is like clutching at straws, especially when compared to the tidal wave of evidence given for them liking one another instead.

And to me, most in the 'Potential' section are simply girls who are in the same book as Negi who are 'interested' in him. But that's fine, people obviously have differing reading experiences. All I can say really is, if I genuinely felt like this was some giant harem, I wouldn't be reading the series much longer. So hopefully Akamatsu decides not to turn it into one.

hmmmmmm.. , Ayaka isn't a Shotacon per-say.
It's not that she likes Negi because he is a shota , she just happened to fall in love with the "English" gentlemen he is. So i don't think she'd give up on an older negi.
At least that's what i understood.

Ayaka likes Negi because he reminds her of the little brother that she never got to have. Remeber that story when the whole gang visited Ayaka's mansion?

When it comes to Chisame, I think that she is going to be like Motoko from Love Hina, in that she doesn't like Negi at first, but then grow to have feelings for him. However, like Motoko, in the end, Negi won't end up with Chisame, as that role will go either Asuna or Nodoka (or both, especially given Nodoka's hidden desire for a threesome ).

If Negi ends up in a relationship with 2 girls then he end up in a harem. there would be no excuse for not getting the other girls too. So it is either 1 (Asuna) or All.

I still don't see why Asuna would be the obvious choice for negi... I mean she still sees him as a kid brother not a potential love interest... The girls that showed most interest is probably Nodoka, Yui, chiya, Ayaka and that robot....

Main female character syndrome.

And since Negima isn't a manga based on a game like Shuffle, it isn't fair game for everyone like it is in those. It's pretty much game over for anyone else, unless Asuna dies or something.

I don't really think Asuna will end up with Negi. I wouldn't be surprised I guess if it happened, but at this moment I just don't see that as being the end result. Actually now that I think of it she probably will if Akamatsu decides to end Negima with Negi hooking up with one of the girls. I personally don't think they would be the right fit for each other.

You I don't really see asuna as the main girl. What proof do you have that she is? I think Ken has done and good job and made who the main girl is quite amibiguous. Out of the 30 something girls it could be any of the main ones like Nodoka or Yui, Asuna so far has gotten very little development and most of those developments are just showing how much she cares for Negi as a little brother.

I agree with the main girl syndrome but who is to say that Asuna is the main girl?
