Depressing, sad, painful at the same time is the arc of Hansel and Gretel in Black Lagoon (episodes # 13, 14, 15). Amazingly cruel and realistic for an anime
As a manga, Ikigami is pretty depressing too.

I kind of thought higurashi was depressing/sad... at least it starts to get that way when you start to get to know the characters and their background

Junkers Come Here is actually a sad movie with funny bits. There's a talking dog, but the real focus is a little girl's struggle with her parent's imminent divorce. Highly recommended. =)

Clannad ~After Story~ have some really sad scenes which will make you end up crying a bucket of tears... but mainly in the middle towards the end of the season (although there is happy moments)

Hummm...I'd say that a good, sad anime was Code Geass R2...Although you'd really have to watch the first season to really get the second season...All in all...Code Geass was a really good anime, Im surprised it wasnt up here already...

Since this is the thread that will not die, let me add the "Bakeneko" arc of Ayakashi Samurai Horror Tales and its successor Mononoke. Some of the stories are sadder than others, but all deal with human cruelty in one form or another.

AIR TV was extrememly sad for me. I also found Ayashi no Ceres to be rather depressing too, especially the ending. I'm currently reading Kanon, but I've heard it's sad too. I really need to get around to seeing Elfen Lied! So many people recommended it!

Did anyone mentioned Fushigi Yuugi? That thing made me blubber like a baby constantly.

Ashiteru yo Baby made me sob too.

The only harem anime where the main male lead got all the girls, and look what happened.

Onle anime I know like that is "Shuffle" he chooses one, but you find out the other races believe in polygamy so they don't give up.

Maybe I just have no heart, but I don't consider most of the stuff listed here as sad. When I think of depressing anime, it would be like Iriya no Sora, UFO no Natsu.
