Let's get to my thoughts before actually reading the chapter.

Spoiler for CHAPTER 62 SPOILERS:

• Looks like Soul officially became a Death Scythe this chapter, awesome. Can't wait to see what new abilities this brings to the table, especially mixed with Maka's black blood.

• Speaking of Maka, her new outfit is adorable. Lots of cool new outfits abound actually.

• Speaking of adorable, Ox now has HAIR.

• Honestly, I'm very glad I'm glad that Kilik and his group still get lots of spotlight, and are still taking part of the primary story. I figured their role would be greatly reduced after the situation in Baba Yaga's castle was resolved, and I'm glad the fears that the anime version planted into my head to begin with have vanished. I really do like the Kilik, Ox, Kim group... and I hope we get to learn about them a little more as we go on.

• Patty is made of infinite badassery, even being able to steal Black Star's thunder. She can also make faces that rival Chrona.

• For those who were afraid that Black Star was going to be all serious and emo now... well he kind of was, but that was quickly halted but the wonderful and wacky Black Star we all know and love. Asking Kim to touch his johnny and whatnot...

• Looks like all three of my theories regarding the villains were correct. Justin wasn't evil from the very beginning, and he encountered something after the battle for BREW (most likely the Clown), thus making him batshit insane. I was also correct about Justin being in cahoots with Noah, and Giriko becoming a member of their little posse as well. THe question of Noah's goal now is still in the air. One of Noah's minions wants Maka dead, but where do Noah's real motives lie?

• Speaking of motives, the Shibusen Elite corps has finally been created, consisting of Maka's group minus Kid and Kilik's group. What I still want to know is, what problem does Shinigami want to deal with first? Why create the SPARTOI, and who are they after? Apparently he's only slightly concerned about Noah and his own son right now, so maybe they're going after Medusa? I already can't wait for the next month.

• Oh... and there was a big lack of Tezcatlipoca and Enrique. I want to see them interact with Shibusen.

Greek mythological warriors that sprungs out of sowed dragon teeth.

And lol at Frey D Sadoko, a serial killer that's a mix of Freddy Kruger and Sadako from The Ring.
She makes you listen to cursed music, then kills you in your dreams. Hahaha oh wow.

Well...it looks as though as I was right about Justin's teleportation powers....I wasn't expecting him to be in cahoots with Noah though. O.O; I guess I should have seen it coming though....

Kid gets one panel and it seems he's aware of what's going on outside of the Book, since he responded to Noah's plan of assasinating Maka. Whether Noah is aware of what's going on inside the Book is another thing, but it's highly likely, as he wasn't surprised when Justin came back. Even if he was expecting Justin, suddenly popping out of a book can make you flinch.

AND! Does anyone have any idea who that third kid is?

Oh! Forgot to mention, the new uniforms seem to be here to stay! They're cuuuuuute!

Speaking of Death Scythes...isn't Tsubaki just a witch's soul away from becoming one too? They did make a big deal about Mifune being a 'great soul' in the beginning, after all. lol wow, if this actually happens (as in Ookubo brings this up as a plot point later) then I gotta say his writing is tight. Soul's cool and all, but I am just drooling over the hotness that would be Death Scythe Tsubaki.

Mifune's soul was as much as 99 human souls, they only hunt down kishin souls, so it didn't count. On the other hand, blackstar has fought many enemies in his long journey so he's bound to reach 100 sometime soon. I was wondering when Maka and Soul would get back to 100, didn't expect it to be now

AND! Does anyone have any idea who that third kid is?

mm, the whole 'kishin' soul thing was an original distinction only made in the anime, if I remember correctly. In the manga, the reason Black Star went after Mifune in the first place was because that would allow him to swiftly gather 99 'normal' souls in one go.

mm if Maka has 100 souls already, and if B*S has 99 simply by killing Mifune, makes me wonder how much Kidd has. Granted its not like Liz and Patti will be able to level up anytime soon with him still confined in the book and such.

Anyways Soul finally becoming a death scythe is pretty awesome, major development for his character I think, and hopefully he'll be able to do more things then he's been able to previously. I also wonder if the black blood will cause complications with the whole death scythe thing, that could be interesting.

New guy looks kinda fruity, but he'd better play an important role considering theres till a lot of characters that need development and hopefully Ohkubo isn't just spitting out plot devices, but im sure he knows what he's doing.

Considering how many souls Maka has gotten and the fact Ox has hair now makes me wonder how long Kidd has been inside that book. Maybe his 'god' body thing prevents him from ever starving to death or dehydrating... but he's prolly slowly going insane from boredom. Or the asymmetrical spirally things in the book, who knows :\

btw wtf does Noah have belts all over him? It looks like some kind of psuedo retarded non-bondage to me.

Oh and JustinxGiriko are totally canon now in my book, i mean with the clown whistling and all.

P.S this chapter made me GAR for Patti. Please say im not the only one.

OMG I wanted to hurt someone when this chapter ended! Ah well, I can wait a month, I suppose.

Interesting chapter, I knew Kid's issue would come up in this chapter unlike the last one, but I also wonder how much time has passed. Clearly it's not years, because Angela would look just a bit older, wouldn't she? My guess is it's been maybe 6 months.

I wonder how Soul and Maka intend to handle the assassination plot when they learn about it. Will Soul learn early enough to take measures in protecting Maka? Will he not be able to get there in time and thus not able to protect Maka from serious injury? Do I sense a reverse hospital scene of what happened to Soul? Or am I just smelling more SoMa moments in the future? :-).

@Kotobasuu: Totally agree with you on JustinxGiriko. That little dialouge between em sounded just a little fishy.

Hm, did anyone feel Shinigami-sama isn't as goody goody as he looks?

With him hiding all the artifacts in the storage, and paying almost no attention to what Noah is up too (and Noah happens to be the Eibon collector too). I say this sounds fishy, really fishy. Could Shinigami-sama purposefully let Noah runs around doing what he wants??

cannon fodder for a powered-up Soul&Maka, I doubt he plays a very important role in the plot since we already got many important plot characters from both sides right now.

I think I'll leave SE for now and wait till the chapters pile up next year, this story is too good to wait for.

There's no suggestion that

being a Death Scythe actually makes any practical difference to the Weapons themselves. There's an indication, from comments about Yumi's abilities, that it might, but there's nothing certain yet.

And when it comes to the assassination plot, I doubt it'd come down purely to Soul protecting Maka. He's hardly the only one who's capable of doing so, much less who'd want to.

@shmaster - I think Shinigami means well, but has a questionable way of getting what he wants. Such as collecting artefacts. Simply having them isn't itself proof that he's a bad guy.

And when it comes to him and Kid, much as I would like them to have a good relationship, I think it's likely misleading to expect that they would have a 'usual' good father-son relationship. Kid is obsessive, and Shinigami has his own quirks and frequently asks totally in contrast to whatever is going on.

Kid has his issues, and his imprisoned, because he never asked the right questions and blundered into bad situations without thinking. I wouldn't be surprised if the same applies too his father; he thinks he knows what Shinigami wants from him, and doesn't think to question what he's told and jumps to his own conclusions.

Okay, was I the only person who thought that Soul only needed 99 souls to level up, not 100? Maybe it's just a mistake but it makes me worried that something is going to go wrong and Soul with not become a death sycthe. Although I'm also worried about him eating Arachne's soul, I'm worried that it might trigger the black blood or some of Soul's insanity and cause new problems.
And go Patti, way to kick butt (and other body parts)! So I guess in the next arc it will be Patti wielding Liz, I was worried that those two might disappear due to a lack of Kid but it looks like they'll be sticking around.

We have to remember that Shinigami basically has to police the entire world. If he panics, EVERYONE panics. He's spent centuries building his fluffy-happy persona, just to provide a sense of peace. If he freaks out over his son, there would be mass panic.

No, it's correct.
It's 99 souls + 1 soul of a witch = 100 souls total.

He already got the soul of a witch, Arachne, remember?
So he ate the 100th soul (99th normal soul), and just had to eat that Arachne soul he kept around for this occasion.

You know how all of Kid's Shibusen mates believe that he's alright and stuff? Yeah, even they care about Kid more than his own daddy. Shinigami doesn't need to freak out over Kid, but he hasn't shown a tiny bit of concern at all for Kid, I have to say that's pretty impressive for a father. Unless this Spartoi group is now off to hunt for the magician that Shingami is so interested in, then I just find it a little strange. =/ Granted, Shinigami isn't exactly normal, and he has a huge amount of problems riding on his shoulders, but still...

Spoiler for Justin, Gikiro, and Noah:

Speaking of which, I'm a little curious about Justin. Do you guys think he'll ever snap out of the insanity and return to Shibusen, or has he already crossed the line and will end up getting killed by Shibusen? With Soul becoming a Death Scythe, does that mean Justin has officially been replaced? I also wonder if Giriko hopped on board under his own will, or if he too has been infected by insanity. To top that all off, why Noah and Justin are working together confuses me now too. I never thought it was actually going to happen back when I speculated, but why would a Kishin supporter and a man who wants to capture the Kishin see eye to eye?

I just hope they don't go into the Maka assassination thing already, since the little minion seems like a boring little lap dog and it'll only lead to more SoulxMaka fluff. I wouldn't mind so much if the manga was weekly, but a month is long time to wait for development, and I'd rather them focus on the big problems like Medusa or the Kishin himself.
