Manga Does Not Rule U.S. Graphic Novel Sales in July

Only 9 Japanese titles in top 20; #2's Naruto Vol. 30 makes way for Watchmen

The ICv2 retail news source reports on the BookScan Top 20 Graphic Novels for July in the American retail market, and for the first time in recent months, Japanese manga titles do not dominate the chart. Masashi Kishimoto's Naruto volumes 30 takes the #2 spot as Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons' Watchmen classic rises to #1 on the strength of the movie trailer that is attached to The Dark Knight film. That film's success also pushed five Batman titles into the top 20. Natsuki Takaya's Fruits Basket series nears its end as the 20th volume ranks at #3. Naruto volumes 29 and 28 take the #5 and #9 spots, respectively, while Queenie Chan's In Odd We Trust interpretation of Dean R. Koontz's Odd Thomas character stays in the chart at #7.

Yuna Kagesaki's Chibi Vampire volume 9 rises to #12, and Tite Kubo's Bleach volume 23 remains on the chart at #14. After almost three years, the first two volumes of Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata's Death Note continue to chart at #15 and #19. In between them is Shiro Amano's Kingdom Hearts II volume 2 at #18.
And if you haven't read Watchmen yet, what the **** is wrong with you?

Shouldn't this be in the Naruto sub-forum?

Anyways, Naruto slipping down one place doesn't seem such a big deal. I mean, dropping down 10 or 20 places, I could throw a "huh?" in there. And I have NO idea who/what Watchmen is.

Wow. Really? I'm not suprised that most people never read it, but I thought that most would have at least heard of it.

The sales went up because a movie based on it is coming out, and the trailer came with the new Batman movie.

I am not sure alot of people on this board are into comics, and that was published in the late 80's.

But it's nice to see that this comics is getting more recognition.

don't kill me for beating a mod to this

Not necessarily. The point of this topic isn't Naruto slipping to the #2 slot, but graphic novels and which are being bought in the American market.

Well, I think it's just a big deal because something is actually more popular than that, and though it's only one number, it's a change...a large change.

Things like this actually influence peoples consumerism.

This is sort of good news actually. Japan is perhaps getting fed up with the honest to goodness slump in creativity it has been enduring for a while in much of it's popular entertainment and is slowly becoming more open to Western works as the western market continues to recover from it's own dearth in creativity. And honestly I'm glad that Japan has chosen to embrace Watchmen, which frankly is one of the most brilliant graphic novel works I have ever layed eyes on. Thought its' still surprising. Wow is all I can say. Hopefully competition from the West will give the Japanese media bigshots the incentive they need to step up the quality once again to meet the challenge.

Wrong. This list is for the American market. Previously, Naruto had been #1 in graphic novel sales in the US but has now slipped behind Watchmen. The list goes.

1. WATCHMEN
2. NARUTO VOL. 30
3. FRUITS BASKET VOL. 20
4. BATMAN: THE KILLING JOKE
5. NARUTO VOL. 29
6. Y: THE LAST MAN VOL. 10
7. IN ODD WE TRUST
8. BATMAN: THE LONG HALLOWEEN
9. NARUTO VOL. 28
10. WANTED
11. BATMAN: THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS
12. CHIBI VAMPIRE VOL. 9
13. BATMAN: YEAR ONE
14. BLEACH VOL. 23
15. DEATH NOTE VOL. 1
16. ALL-STAR BATMAN & ROBIN, THE BOY WONDER VOL. 1
17. THE WALKING DEAD VOL. 8
18. KINGDOM HEARTS II VOL. 2
19. DEATH NOTE VOL. 2
20. MARVEL ZOMBIES 2

Seems like a good mix

Not exactly something to have an orgasm over. Does it really matter that much? Remember that Naruto was at #1 because it is a popular anime. I'm not mad over Naruto at all, but it is overrated obviously because lots of people think that it is good. Many people have decided to detest Naruto just for the simple fact that it is 'overrated' without even watching it. I thought the same thing until I started buying the collection when it made its UK release and I could finally see why it was so popular. T'is actually a quality and decent series.

But honestly..I couldn't care less. It would not bother me in the slightest if it were at #2, #5 or even... #10!! I'm not too fussed over the series and I am not too fussed where it is placed. I just like it as an individual and just because it is coming second in some random chart I have never even heard of does not at all change the fact that it is a worth-watching anime.
