I'd be remiss if I didn't share this: I did that "hold your nose and blow" thing when I was a kid, blew out an eardrum and it hurt like hell for a couple of days. I absolutely do not recommend it as a casual thing to try. I think doctors say it's a bad idea too.

That aside, nice primer episode. Like Teko, I can't wait to get to the actual diving now.

Well yes, it's not a game. But if you're in a situation where the pressure on your ears matters: ie, diving, or for that matter, ascending/descending in a plane, it can be better to use to to pop your ears than to let the pressure build up too far. Just do it cautiously. Don't hold your nose and immediately blow with all your lung-capacity through your sinuses. Blow into your nose gently, increasing the force just until your ears pop, and then stop.

In my case I can actually pop my ears at will. Don't ask me how, I just... do. Under high-pressure I may need to use one of these techniques, but usually I can just pop my ears as I go without needing to resort to one of them.

I had a reason for doing it, I had been flying and my ears were stuffed up so my grandmother suggested it. She didn't bother to explain that I needed to do it gently.

But anyway I mean it's not a fun "try it and see" move like they made it seem in this episode. People might not be aware that they can hurt themselves trying to imitate it.

To be fair, the average person doesn't usually hurt themselves the first time they do it, even without a warning attached.

Have just started this today. Watched 1-3.

Hmm, the long uniforms + boots for the female students seemed strange to me at first.. somehow made them look tall and grown up. But after awhile it became a nice change of pace from the short skirts and knee high stockings of other anime. The calm mood of Amanchu somehow reminds me of Aria - that anime where girls row boats.

The little bits of humor helps to energize the mood every once in awhile. Liked the nice visuals of the girls walking near the "tunnel" of cherry blossoms on episode 3.

I like all the characters so far. Pikari x Teko is cute. And some nice support characters too, like the kind grandma and club room advisor who is also a diver.

Going to keep watching this.

Same manga author, same director, same animating company. That will do it.

Aria = TYO
Amanchu = JC Staff

It takes little common sense in not to do it. Even as a kid I knew it was a bad idea to do it without actually attempting it or somebody telling me about it, I just knew.

Episode 4:

That was really good, loved how Teko started learning more about diving with some pool training. I noticed they are adapting this with some chapter rearrangements but it's working fine so far.

I thought the Pikari scene was funny too with that monkey girl, loved how they communicated w/each other non verbally. The episode itself also felt atmospheric as usual and perfect for the Summer.

The thing about this show is that it almost gets me into slight panic attacks. I know I would never be able to go diving, I'm too anxious of a person not to get a complete panic attack at the though of not being able to breathe unaided

Episode 4

So Futaba's diving lessons have started and she is finding the buddy system cool. But the diving part is turning out to be a bit too difficult. She's starting to have second thoughts about this. She thought diving was pretty damn cool, but didn't expect it to be difficult. And she gets even more scared when she thinks about what would happen if the same mask troubles were to happen if she were 10 meters underwater. And Pikari comes to give her some encouragement and takes her by her hand underwater and even goes deeper.

That was all nice seeing Futaba overcome her fear and going for it. She had a habit of leaving things which were too difficult but she is actually going forward here with Pikari's help. Although it felt a bit rushed. I think it would have turned out a bit better if she had given up today and then come back next time with Pikari's pushing. This was good, but could have been a bit better imo.

No, her problem is that if she lets herself walk away from something she won't come back to it. If something seems too difficult to her she gives up before she really tries, and tells herself that it's impossible for her, that she's weak and hopeless, and that there's no point in someone like her trying to do something like that. She needed to press forward, here and now, or she would never have been able to do it at all.

It's likely the pool was made as a diver training pool, hence the dropoff. Something similar to this thing:

Granted, this pic of the Nemo 33 diving pool is on the extreme side, but they do exist.

another beautiful episode. the animation quality in the preface was on another level. the detail in the face and eyes were amazing. great to see teko gaining confidence in herself and slowly welcoming the change that has happened in her life. also, the bit with the underwear. pretty great.

the show needs more curves though. they're really shorting us with Katori-sensei..

The anime is really doing Teko's beauty justice. She looked stunning during the first half of the episode.

It's also possible it is intended for springboard and high-board diving -- sports pools with such facilities usually have a deeper section at one end, usually five metres deep or more.

A new deep-dive pool is being planned in the UK, going down 50 metres compared to the 33 metres depth of the Nemo pool in Belgium.
