Ep.1 comments
I never play any Atelier games before. I only know it from many beautiful artworks found on some image boards. So, when I heard that it will get anime, I think I will try it out. ....and I like it. The story & setting are nothing special for these days but this show gives me a comfort feeling when I watch it. The pace is ok. Not too fast or too slow. From the first ep, this seems to be the SOL show set in fantasy world but the OP show that there will be an action in the future. I don't really know what kind of game is Atelier...Is it the RPG mix with crafting system??? However, the alchemy part really tell you that this show is based on the game. Characters are likeable. I thought Escha will be [a clumsy girl who bad at almost everything] type of character when I first saw her design but it turns out that she is skilled at her job and she looks mature. I can't say much about Logy but he seems to be your standard good guy MC. BTW, Is that tail on Escha a decoration? I think I will watch this show untill the end.

It's mentioned once in a quick dialogue in the game between Escha and Logix. Spoiler for minor fact, not important for the story:

I also enjoyed the first ep - pleasant and breezy, like an early morning of one of the first days of summer. Pretty good for an Intro ep in my opinion. I hope the world building will continue from here.
I like both Escha and Logy and characters too (Escha's tail and the sound effects immediately made me think of Princess Milhiore from Dog Days ); they seemed like refreshingly normal folks and had good chemistry in the first ep. Umm... no pun intended there.

I did like a lot of it, but to be honest after getting floored by a few other series beginning this season visuals wise - one which was great and another which left me hollow - this one just looks well done to me.
But hey, if the art blows you away it blows you away.

At least so far it seems everyone here is enjoying it hehe. That's one reason why I had always preordered every single game ever since I learned about it since Atelier Iris, the first Atelier game for the PS2 (not the first game in the series obviously). And the games keep getting better and better and better. Now there's even an anime! Only thing is, I still wonder why they decided to make an anime for the 2nd game for this particular arc of this trilogy instead of the the first game (Ayesha).
Well, I'm not complaining either way. Heh.

Caved in and watched the raw despite my lousy Japanese. Well, I'm familiar with the source material, so...
God, I love this adaption. Perfect atmosphere. The original sequences fit in effortlessly, and anything they changed only enhances the atmosphere. Character animation wasn't the best, and sometimes the art felt off (with weirdly proportioned faces, especially in some side-views), but I can easily forgive these minor (to me) flaws, because they're just doing it right. (And I love how they handle the alchemy. They just ignore how silly it is to drop in screws and cogs and take out a finished gear, and play it straight. It's hilarious. I especially like the little touches, like the townsfolk or homunculi shots. Also, only in a RPG adaption do rats (look like rabbits to me, but "rat" is what the game says) and wolves gang up on humans rather than, you know, be at the opposite ends of the food-chain. Really, really happy. Gokumi know what they're doing. |

Even nicer with the sub. The easy atmosphere and absence of real conflict is enjoyable. I'm not that keen on Murakawa Rie's voice here, but I do enjoy Escha, so Murakawa-san must be doing something right. Ishikawa Kaito is nailing it, however, as usual.
Calling Kurone "Clone," as the sub did, is a mark against it. That's not how you say "clone" in Japanese. And she isn't a clone, but some kind of robot. At least that's how I see it.

That's definitely strange, but the sub isn't to blame. It's the official localisation; I haven't played the dub, but apparently it caused a lot of confusion, because the English vocal track doesn't say "clone" (even though that's how they write the name).

Okay, now that I have been able to watch it subbed I am so all over this series.
I guess what I liked best about the first ep was its ... subtle atmospherics and world building, I guess? The emotional, poetic associations with the term "dusk" really summarize a lot of what this sum total that came across for me was like. But it was easy to miss, and I wonder how much of it is my own reading into the ep and what was actually intended to be there? In any event Escha is shockingly adorable.

I will definitely watch this series. I've enjoyed the Atelier series for a long time and have played a majority of their games and enjoyed them all. I was a little concerned how a game would make the transition into an anime, but it seems my worries were fairly groundless, it's been able to adapt well enough.
To my amusement they're not even trying to be subtle about what's going to happen with our two leads. Also, it should go without saying but this anime is going to spoil the heck out of the game, so you are all fairly warned. THAR BE SPOILERS YO! |

I found this episode very mundane but I'm not holding that against the series because it was basically world building. I'm just going to consider the second episode the first episode because it seems like the other MCs will be introduced along with character dynamics. Honestly felt like I was in a tutorial reading all the dialog and I'm guessing that's what they wanted so good job.

How to make cake, Atelier-style:
• Combine all ingredients in a cauldron. • Mix well with a large spatula. • Cover and secure the lid. • Wait until the cauldron jitters violently. • ??? • CAKE!

She sure is! She's already super adorable in the game. They made her even more so here.
Pretty much! Both Escha and Logy are alchemists but as you probably noticed already, they're different types. So basically even Logy was just utterly shocked at what just happened in front of his eyes when he saw Escha do her method of alchemy. If you are able to play the game, it's quite hilarious.
