The illustrator tends be inconsistent on the artwork

all that tells me is that the author doesn't care for the inconsistencies in the art work or has no say in the matter, if he doesn't care don't expect the sword forms to be redone, if he has know say in the matter then still don't expect the sword forms to get a redesign unless the author gets a change in illustrator

Everyone on baidu is complaining about Kamito wielding two "ugly thick bladed daos/machetes" instead of two katanas/rapier or whatever kind of sword they think is elegant. Some people even thought that Kamito was wielding two "oversized chinese kitchen knives".

I believe that this is obviously intentional. If their sword forms are so terrible, they'll have an excuse to stay in their human forms. I mean, you can't make babies with a sword can you?

TBH the blade width of Vorpal Sword (Restia) seems to have fluctuated a lot from what it was like in the vol 7 illustration.

This. Kamito was trained as an assassin, he probably doesn't go in for fancy swords.
