All right, here's something new. You can blame thank Nanya for inspiring me on this one. My own take on Sette, his favorite Number, and her trials and tribulations following her release from prison.

Per the order of the Mid-Childan Central Penetentiary System Parole Board, this unit (Scaglietti Model Cyborg, Numbers Class, Designate Sette) was released from incarceration on the date of Friday, February 13, Mid Calendar Year 083, at 1500 hours. Terms of Sentence reduced for model prisoner behavior.

I viewed this as an acceptable judgment; I had taken care to stringently follow all prison guidelines to the letter, including informing the warden of a structural flaw in another inmate’s cell that might have allowed her to open her containment, leading to a breach in facility security. Several inmates attempted to assault me in the shower afterward as retribution; after confiscating their various makeshift weapons (forbidden under penal code 557-D), I delivered them to the infirmary to have their injuries treated (as specified in the stipulations regarding treatment of wounded inmates discussed in penal code 147-F).

The Doctor chuckled slightly, shaking his head in a gesture I believed to represent amusement. “Ah, you always were one of the more interesting ones, weren’t you? Very well… if it helps you come to terms with your situation, then the only order I have for you is to consider yourself free from any obligation you feel you have to me, and to go into the world and pursue the life you want to pursue.” And with that, the Doctor turned to leave the small comm. hub, turning off his end of the link as he did so.

Ah.

Taking these orders into consideration, I took thirty-seven seconds to determine what sort of life I wanted to pursue.

Having determined that the life I wanted to pursue was one in which I was given less nebulous mission objectives, I proceeded with my visitation rights to see my incarcerated sisters. All three of them were command units, and had authority to provide me with a clear goal in the Doctor’s place. Due to extenuating factors in my case, their sentences had always been longer than my own. I had offered them copies of the Prison Handbook, attempting to aid them in shortening their sentences by pointing out several areas in which they could improve their overall imprisonment efficiency. Quattro-nee-sama responded with several statements which I believe to have been insulting.

“Oh, Sette.” Tre-nee-sama said, her tone indicating surprise. “Why are you back here? I thought you had been paroled early.”

“Yes, that is true. However, I felt the need to first receive updated mission objectives from a command unit.” I informed her.

Uno-nee-sama smiled softly. “Sette… I’m sure you already spoke to Doctor Scaglietti. He must have told you that he had no objectives for you.”

“Yes, that is true. I believe imprisonment has adversely affected his mental state. After he failed to provide a properly structured assignment, I elected to consult the other command units to determine if any had an objective to assign me.” I informed her.

Tre-nee-sama sighed, for unknown reasons. “Honestly. Obedience is all well and good, but this gets a little old… Sette. We have no objectives, and we have no missions for you. Nobody in these cells has any need or any right to order you to do anything. You are free.”

Ah.

I considered this.

“As a free being, I therefore have the right to request that I be given orders.” I said, satisfied with this logical conclusion.

Tre-nee-sama narrowed her eyes. “This is all your fault, you know.” She said, the statement directed at the third occupied cell in the block.

“I just wanted to make her more efficient.” Quattro-nee-sama said, her tone indicating annoyance or possibly indigestion. “It’s not my fault the puppet can’t think for herself.”

“No, actually, it is.” Tre-nee-sama said bluntly.

“I am able to think for myself.” I said, because it was true. “I think for myself often. Recently, thought for myself that I should request I be given orders.”

“Ugh, I forgot how annoying you can be.” Quattro-nee-sama said in disgust, or possibly heartburn. I was quickly beginning to deduce that she was either unhappy for some reason, or had eaten something unpalatable. This would not be a problem if she ate a properly nutritious diet choosing a variety of foods from all food groups, readily available in the prison cafeteria (A full menu detailed in Penal Code 459-R). “Why don’t you just get lost? Nobody here is interested in coddling you anymore.”

“Quattro!” Uno-nee-sama said sharply. “Show a little courtesy to your younger sister, please.”

“Why bother? She’s leaving and we all know I never am. Why should I care what she thinks of me? She gets to go off live a happy life in the sun with the traitors while I rot in here; I think that cancels out the sting of any insult I can think of.” Quattro-nee-sama said.

“I see.” I said. “I should not have underestimated Quattro-nee-sama’s keen tactical mind.”

“… wait, what?”

“I shall go to consult our sisters who chose outside rehabilitation. Cinque-nee-sama also has command authority over me, and as she has been dwelling in the outside world, it is possible that she has acquired tasks at hand that need to be cleared. Yes, this is an acceptable solution.” I said, satisfied with my new course of action. “Thank you, Quattro-nee-sama. I owe you much for this suggestion. You are a good sister.”

All three of my older sisters blinked several times without saying anything. Perhaps the dry air in the cells was irritating their eyes; I would consult the warden before I left the complex to see if they could be provided with some sort of moisturizing solution.

“Er… whatever makes you happy, I guess. Good… good job, Quattro?” Tre-nee-sama said.

“Yeah,” Quattro-nee-sama said in shock… or possibly nausea. “Whatever you say.”

After leaving my sisters, I began acting on my new mission to acquire a new mission. I collected my few belongings from the prison storehouse (Penal Code 901-L), boarded the former prisoner’s pro bono public transit to Cranagan on Midchilda (TSAB Transport Regulation 00918), and located the Nakajima Household where I had been informed Cinque-nee-sama and several of my other sisters were currently living (Cranagan Central Residence and Communication Directory, ‘N’ section).

It was roughly 0100 hours when I arrived at the address listed for Genya Nakajima, the man I understood to be responsible for the housing of my sisters. As I entered the property, I immediately began to take note of environmental factors, noticing several which I deemed possibly relevant to my new living situation. There was no visible flight combat simulator, which would hamper my training efforts. There appeared to be some sort of small humanoid creature in the garden, which I initially took for a new model of unison device, but which further study revealed to be some sort of wooden idol of an elderly gentleman. Still, it would have been an excellent site for a hidden surveillance device, and so I elected to check the inside for any sort of hidden equipment. I found none. I was not able to restore the statue to intact condition with the limited tools on hand.

Satisfied with this contribution to the security of the premises, I proceeded to the main door. I had, in the past, been told by my sisters that my manner was blunt and occasionally inconsiderate. Given that some of those living in this home would have little reason to welcome me warmly, I elected to begin my new residence in a considerate manner. Ringing the doorbell at this late hour would wake the entire household, and would be considered rude. I instead elected to be considerate and enter the building quietly and without disturbing anyone, as a show of good faith. I was able to accomplish this relatively easily by picking the lock on the front door and severing the power source for the on-site alarm system.

Yes, I thought in satisfaction. This will clearly show all involved that I mean no harm.

Once inside, I began studying the layout of the house. I restricted myself to the first floor, so as not to wake anyone sleeping upstairs, but was still able to determine several convenient escape routes in the event of common household dangers, such as fire, gas leak, or berserk robots. I also noted a structure in the trees in the backyard, possibly intended as some sort of child’s plaything. It appeared dilapidated from disuse, but with mild repair could potentially serve as an excellent sniper post. I elected to mention this to Dieci at the first opportunity.

I then found a comfortable chair, sat down, and waited.

Six hours later, I nodded in satisfaction. Yes, clandestine entry had been the correct choice. I had definitely been considerate, and would be praised upon detailing the successful infiltration to the inhabitants of this home. Initial objective complete.

I will say that writing in her serious, super-literal tone has been surprisingly entertaining. I hope it remains so, as she interacts with the outside world. Go, Sette-chan!

I must say, I'm amazed that you can come up with so many technical titles/labels, and still make them sound good and realistic!

Sette trying to convince her older sisters to give her orders, even as a free being, was hilarious XD. Doubly ironic that Quattro was the one who finally convinced Sette to leave the prison!

And at the Nakajima house...in a convoluted, socially inept way, Sette does make a lot of sense (check out property security...oops, there goes the garden gnome...don't want to disturb anybody, cut the alarm and let myself in....)! I can't wait to see what the reaction is to finding her sitting in their living room .

I considered this. “I wish to be Sette. All objectives cleared, mission complete. Please provide my next assignment.”

The Doctor chuckled slightly, shaking his head in a gesture I believed to represent amusement. “Ah, you always were one of the more interesting ones, weren’t you? Very well… if it helps you come to terms with your situation, then the only order I have for you is to consider yourself free from any obligation you feel you have to me, and to go into the world and pursue the life you want to pursue.” And with that, the Doctor turned to leave the small comm. hub, turning off his end of the link as he did so.

Ah.

Taking these orders into consideration, I took thirty-seven seconds to determine what sort of life I wanted to pursue.

Having determined that the life I wanted to pursue was one in which I was given less nebulous mission objectives, I proceeded with my visitation rights to see my incarcerated sisters. All three of them were command units, and had authority to provide me with a clear goal in the Doctor’s place. Due to extenuating factors in my case, their sentences had always been longer than my own. I had offered them copies of the Prison Handbook, attempting to aid them in shortening their sentences by pointing out several areas in which they could improve their overall imprisonment efficiency. Quattro-nee-sama responded with several statements which I believe to have been insulting.

“Oh, Sette.” Tre-nee-sama said, her tone indicating surprise. “Why are you back here? I thought you had been paroled early.”

“Yes, that is true. However, I felt the need to first receive updated mission objectives from a command unit.” I informed her.

Uno-nee-sama smiled softly. “Sette… I’m sure you already spoke to Doctor Scaglietti. He must have told you that he had no objectives for you.”

“Yes, that is true. I believe imprisonment has adversely affected his mental state. After he failed to provide a properly structured assignment, I elected to consult the other command units to determine if any had an objective to assign me.” I informed her.

Tre-nee-sama sighed, for unknown reasons. “Honestly. Obedience is all well and good, but this gets a little old… Sette. We have no objectives, and we have no missions for you. Nobody in these cells has any need or any right to order you to do anything. You are free.”

Ah.

I considered this.

“As a free being, I therefore have the right to request that I be given orders.” I said, satisfied with this logical conclusion.

Tre-nee-sama narrowed her eyes. “This is all your fault, you know.” She said, the statement directed at the third occupied cell in the block.

“I just wanted to make her more efficient.” Quattro-nee-sama said, her tone indicating annoyance or possibly indigestion. “It’s not my fault the puppet can’t think for herself.”

“No, actually, it is.” Tre-nee-sama said bluntly.

“I am able to think for myself.” I said, because it was true. “I think for myself often. Recently, thought for myself that I should request I be given orders.”

“Ugh, I forgot how annoying you can be.” Quattro-nee-sama said in disgust, or possibly heartburn. I was quickly beginning to deduce that she was either unhappy for some reason, or had eaten something unpalatable. This would not be a problem if she ate a properly nutritious diet choosing a variety of foods from all food groups, readily available in the prison cafeteria (A full menu detailed in Penal Code 459-R). “Why don’t you just get lost? Nobody here is interested in coddling you anymore.”

“Quattro!” Uno-nee-sama said sharply. “Show a little courtesy to your younger sister, please.”

“Why bother? She’s leaving and we all know I never am. Why should I care what she thinks of me? She gets to go off live a happy life in the sun with the traitors while I rot in here; I think that cancels out the sting of any insult I can think of.” Quattro-nee-sama said.

“I see.” I said. “I should not have underestimated Quattro-nee-sama’s keen tactical mind.”

As I entered the property, I immediately began to take note of environmental factors, noticing several which I deemed possibly relevant to my new living situation. There was no visible flight combat simulator, which would hamper my training efforts. There appeared to be some sort of small humanoid creature in the garden, which I initially took for a new model of unison device, but which further study revealed to be some sort of wooden idol of an elderly gentleman. Still, it would have been an excellent site for a hidden surveillance device, and so I elected to check the inside for any sort of hidden equipment. I found none. I was not able to restore the statue to intact condition with the limited tools on hand.

Satisfied with this contribution to the security of the premises, I proceeded to the main door. I had, in the past, been told by my sisters that my manner was blunt and occasionally inconsiderate. Given that some of those living in this home would have little reason to welcome me warmly, I elected to begin my new residence in a considerate manner. I was able to accomplish this relatively easily by picking the lock on the front door and severing the power source for the on-site alarm system.

........I may be wrong, or getting way too scientifically technical , but isn't cloning the act of replicating something? Making cells divide faster is a way of replicating (for single-celled organisms at least)....

I guess using the word "cloning" for Nanoha isn't entirely accurate, as she's not being reproduced as a whole individual, but rather only certain body cells are being replicated and replacing the old, dead ones. I guess I saw it as cloning body parts, and having them magically transplanted? So a very super-glorified form of healing? The reason I chose the word "clone" is because for a human brain, cells don't naturally divide once the brain is mature (creating new cells and more branching doesn't count), so what Fate would have had to do was completely reproduce Nanoha's brain (so cloning instead of replicating/healing) and er....replace the dead one .

It's really the brain part that's keeping me stubborn in using cloning magic instead of more heavily considering the idea of giving Nanoha a mana-created body . I know that I could have had Fate act sooner, but it makes Fate's actions seem even less justifiable, when Fate's already treading on morally questionable ground .

So for now, to keep this debate from going way too detailed, I'm just going to say that in my story, for minor cloning (say, just single organs and such) Precia had come up with short-cut spells (which Fate had learned somewhere, for some reason), but that regular, full-person cloning requires all the liquid tubes of stuff .

It was in a warm summer night that the clock of the world was turning. A time for destiny to make its arrival upon the world, its dark edges on the brink of existence traversing the cosmos to reach its destination.

It was here, at this time, that everything had been assembled. The order of the world had been put together and its actors waited for their time to begin their last, magnificent, performance.

These actors held power in their hands. Power few could have. Power one could yield to rule and command. Power one could use to destroy.

As destiny arrived, this power could be felt all throughout the world. Ancient gears grinded into motion and legions were assembled to vow their bidding to their commanders. Souls could smell the air that was full of anticipation of what was to come.

The time was nigh. Destiny was to be fulfilled.

The wrath of millions shone as suns.

It was at the time of the beginning of this destiny, that one of these commanders had made a choice. A choice she had been thinking of for a long time.

To pick a side and fight along with it... Or to be a mere observer from the sidelines.

It was here, on the plains of a large valley, that a battle had been fought. A massive battle, told only through the blasted ruins that still stood high among the bodies without life. The sea of red spoke of sacrifice. The blue moon shining in the night spoke of the lost souls.

It was here, in the middle of all this destruction, that a small group of soldiers stood, their faces heavy with exhaustion and their clothes in rags, yet with minds of iron. An unbreakable wall of conviction and morale.

I think you misunderstood what I was saying. What I meant was that when you die, that's (usually) why it's so quick; to end the suffering. I didn't mean that if you're suffering you go and commit suicide to end it.

And at the Nakajima house...in a convoluted, socially inept way, Sette does make a lot of sense (check out property security...oops, there goes the garden gnome...don't want to disturb anybody, cut the alarm and let myself in....)! I can't wait to see what the reaction is to finding her sitting in their living room .

When I decided to write a story entirely from Sette's point of view, I wasn't exactly sure what to do at first. In the end, I decided the best way to handle her was to have everything she do be perfectly logical... in the completely wrong way. Judging by reactions so far, it's working!

Like I said; she is surprisingly fun to write. Especially in the first person. Her whole character is based around the fact that she's the cold, logical, machine-like Number, so I'm portraying her as convinced that she is perfectly sensible and normal, even though what she thinks of as 'logic' is not something that a normal person would consider, and she is not normal in any sense of the word.

Really, I never really even noticed Sette in StrikerS, but after only one chapter of trying to get into her head I'm starting to find her incredibly adorable, even though I know in my head that most of what I'm seeing about her is stuff I made up!

So you're asking us to believe that Fate did something to Nanoha on a more specific scale than Precia did, with better results, in a process that Precia would have had more knowledge in. That's partly why I said including it makes it more convoluted, because you have to introduce yet more explanations to get around all of this. While you can do this, I feel it's simpler not to use.

Everyone makes rash decisions, especially where emotions are concerned. And hey, if Fate is 12, she's going through puberty, which already plays havoc on an emotional state. "Nanoha... dying? No, I can't have that! Not like this! There has to be something I can... do..."

Also, I'm kinda doubting a familiar could be dispelled with AMF. Zafira wasn't, if you want to take the view that he was similar to a familiar. I doubt Arf would be. It seems like magic is used to create the body, and after that, it's real. Then the soul is put into it, and from then on, the master sends it an amount of mana to keep it alive, like it's on life support.

Very well… if it helps you come to terms with your situation, then the only order I have for you is to consider yourself free from any obligation you feel you have to me, and to go into the world and pursue the life you want to pursue.” And with that, the Doctor turned to leave the small comm. hub, turning off his end of the link as he did so.

Taking these orders into consideration, I took thirty-seven seconds to determine what sort of life I wanted to pursue.

I had offered them copies of the Prison Handbook, attempting to aid them in shortening their sentences by pointing out several areas in which they could improve their overall imprisonment efficiency. “Oh, Sette.” Tre-nee-sama said, her tone indicating surprise. “Why are you back here? I thought you had been paroled early.”

“Yes, that is true. However, I felt the need to first receive updated mission objectives from a command unit.” I informed her.

Uno-nee-sama smiled softly. “Sette… I’m sure you already spoke to Doctor Scaglietti. He must have told you that he had no objectives for you.”

“Yes, that is true. I believe imprisonment has adversely affected his mental state. After he failed to provide a properly structured assignment, I elected to consult the other command units to determine if any had an objective to assign me.” I informed her.

Tre-nee-sama sighed, for unknown reasons. “Honestly. Obedience is all well and good, but this gets a little old… Sette. We have no objectives, and we have no missions for you. Nobody in these cells has any need or any right to order you to do anything. You are free.”

“As a free being, I therefore have the right to request that I be given orders.” I said, satisfied with this logical conclusion.

Tre-nee-sama narrowed her eyes. “This is all your fault, you know.” She said, the statement directed at the third occupied cell in the block.

“I just wanted to make her more efficient.” Quattro-nee-sama said, her tone indicating annoyance or possibly indigestion. “It’s not my fault the puppet can’t think for herself.”

“No, actually, it is.” Tre-nee-sama said bluntly.

“I am able to think for myself.” I said, because it was true. “I think for myself often. Recently, thought for myself that I should request I be given orders.”

“Ugh, I forgot how annoying you can be.” Quattro-nee-sama said in disgust, or possibly heartburn. I was quickly beginning to deduce that she was either unhappy for some reason, or had eaten something unpalatable. This would not be a problem if she ate a properly nutritious diet choosing a variety of foods from all food groups, readily available in the prison cafeteria (A full menu detailed in Penal Code 459-R). “Why don’t you just get lost? Nobody here is interested in coddling you anymore.”

“Quattro!” Uno-nee-sama said sharply. “Show a little courtesy to your younger sister, please.”

“Why bother? She’s leaving and we all know I never am. Why should I care what she thinks of me? She gets to go off live a happy life in the sun with the traitors while I rot in here; I think that cancels out the sting of any insult I can think of.” Quattro-nee-sama said.

“I see.” I said. “I should not have underestimated Quattro-nee-sama’s keen tactical mind.”

“… wait, what?”

“I shall go to consult our sisters who chose outside rehabilitation. Cinque-nee-sama also has command authority over me, and as she has been dwelling in the outside world, it is possible that she has acquired tasks at hand that need to be cleared. Yes, this is an acceptable solution.” I said, satisfied with my new course of action. “Thank you, Quattro-nee-sama. I owe you much for this suggestion. You are a good sister.”

All three of my older sisters blinked several times without saying anything. Perhaps the dry air in the cells was irritating their eyes; I would consult the warden before I left the complex to see if they could be provided with some sort of moisturizing solution.

“Er… whatever makes you happy, I guess. Good… good job, Quattro?” Tre-nee-sama said.

“Yeah,” Quattro-nee-sama said in shock… or possibly nausea. “Whatever you say.”

After leaving my sisters, I began acting on my new mission to acquire a new mission. I collected my few belongings from the prison storehouse (Penal Code 901-L), boarded the former prisoner’s pro bono public transit to Cranagan on Midchilda (TSAB Transport Regulation 00918), and located the Nakajima Household where I had been informed Cinque-nee-sama and several of my other sisters were currently living (Cranagan Central Residence and Communication Directory, ‘N’ section).

It was roughly 0100 hours when I arrived at the address listed for Genya Nakajima, the man I understood to be responsible for the housing of my sisters. As I entered the property, I immediately began to take note of environmental factors, noticing several which I deemed possibly relevant to my new living situation. There was no visible flight combat simulator, which would hamper my training efforts. There appeared to be some sort of small humanoid creature in the garden, which I initially took for a new model of unison device, but which further study revealed to be some sort of wooden idol of an elderly gentleman. Still, it would have been an excellent site for a hidden surveillance device, and so I elected to check the inside for any sort of hidden equipment. I found none. I was not able to restore the statue to intact condition with the limited tools on hand.

Satisfied with this contribution to the security of the premises, I proceeded to the main door. I had, in the past, been told by my sisters that my manner was blunt and occasionally inconsiderate. Given that some of those living in this home would have little reason to welcome me warmly, I elected to begin my new residence in a considerate manner. Ringing the doorbell at this late hour would wake the entire household, and would be considered rude. I instead elected to be considerate and enter the building quietly and without disturbing anyone, as a show of good faith. I was able to accomplish this relatively easily by picking the lock on the front door and severing the power source for the on-site alarm system.

Yes, I thought in satisfaction. This will clearly show all involved that I mean no harm.

Once inside, I began studying the layout of the house. I restricted myself to the first floor, so as not to wake anyone sleeping upstairs, but was still able to determine several convenient escape routes in the event of common household dangers, such as fire, gas leak, or berserk robots. I also noted a structure in the trees in the backyard, possibly intended as some sort of child’s plaything. It appeared dilapidated from disuse, but with mild repair could potentially serve as an excellent sniper post. I elected to mention this to Dieci at the first opportunity.

I then found a comfortable chair, sat down, and waited.

Six hours later, I nodded in satisfaction. Yes, clandestine entry had been the correct choice. I had definitely been considerate, and would be praised upon detailing the successful infiltration to the inhabitants of this home. Initial objective complete.

Nothing special so far, really; a bit short, but this was basically a prologue to get Sette out of prison and establish the setting.

I will say that writing in her serious, super-literal tone has been surprisingly entertaining. I hope it remains so, as she interacts with the outside world. Go, Sette-chan!

Sette does need more love. So rare that people actually use the cyborgs, that they don't even know their personalities. It's one reason why I wanted to feature Quattro, Tre and Sette more in my Crisis series. Sette is more the "perfect soldier" as Quattro said, mostly emotionless, concerned only with the mission. You nailed it fairly well here, although she comes across sounding a bit too Vulcan-ish, but that's doable with humor.

Hopefully lead to people using her more, at lest. The Nanoha series itself won't, because Sette is 7. =(

Yeah, as a result of the story being mostly for amusement value there's going to be some exaggeration of her character. Though honestly, she got so little screentime in StrikerS and almost all of it was in combat, so I'm sure most readers won't actually know that...

I just PM'd you with a variation of this idea, that might hopefully be a good bridge between all our thoughts about cloning . I do still want to keep it, just for the link with canon TSAB law, and also because wicked me likes the fact that sweet, innocent Fate is now being lumped in with Precia XD.

I don't think that a familiar can be dispelled with AMF either, but if the AMF cuts the mana link between master and familiar things probably wouldn't look pretty .

Well that's one possible interpretation. Precia rejected her as a replacement for Alicia, so either there's something "wrong" with Fate, or there's something wrong with Precia. If it's got something to do with Fate, then my entirely unscientific guess is that they don't have the same soul and hence aren't the same person, which would fit with this recurring theme we have throughout the series of the value of the individual. It's the same thing as what Vivio went through in StrikerS and what Einheart is dealing with now in ViVid, this notion that regardless of how they were born or whose memories they have they are their own person, not just a copy of a DNA sample.

Of course the problem could also be with Precia, and we know there's something lots of things wrong with her.
