I voted Nay. Of the games I've played with such scenes, they almost universally felt out of place and ruined the pacing/mood. I have nothing against characters having sex as part of story, and indeed sometimes that can be very important, but I'd say about 99% of the time there's absolutely no reason to go into explicit detail about it. They don't even make particularly good porn, as I'm probably not in the mood at that point in the story.

Nay! A lot of visual novels out there could do without the ero...that is not to say that the ero wasn't well done..but by just including 5 min of ero in a 50 hours long visual novel, it causes a stigma to be attached to these visual novels. lol the most obvious change would be calling these games 'H games' as opposed to their original name..'Visual Novels'. The ' H game' label would in turn dissuade lots of people( newbies!) from buying these games or stir up a lot of needless controversies and moral issues( Rapelay aftermath..with women rights associations/politicians petitioning against games with ero content...even harmless themes like school council were part of their to-be-banned list ). Ultimately, it results in less people playing some of those great visual novels out there.

Unless we're making a distinction between porn-with-plot games and plot-with-porn games, I'd say that I would rather allow ero in visual novels rather than not, considering that the majority of visual novels don't really have great story [or aren't even made to have a good story].

As for choices, you have the choice to buy an all ages game or an eroge. Also why did you bother reviving a dead thread from almost 3,5 years ago? |

And that's why i posted earlier that if you don't want any sexual content, you can opt not to buy(i doubt you are buying them in the first place)/play eroge but all ages VN's instead. While not as abundant as eroge, there are still plenty of those to read.

The question is, as others alluded in the comments years back, a bit too simplistic. The "best answer" is probably "it depends"... and that's not on the poll.

Which was very evident when Minori's all ages game Supipara earlier this year bombed hard, while their Natsuzora no Perseus (released 4 weeks ago)ended being the 4th highest sold VN of getchu in 2012 . There are exceptions like VN's made by Type Moon (and maybe key, but that is debatable), as those games tend to sell very well regardless if it's an eroge or an all ages work. |

And eroge and VN have so much overlap, they are practically the same anyway.

And I never said I don't want any sexual content, I said that I'm not sure what to say to games with things like rape, which isn't just sex. |

PS2/PS3/PSP/Xbox releases from my perspective are 100% free from this. So you can just divert in that direction? But after playing Fate/Extra on my PSP, VNs can do without the H content in them. There are many people who play VNs just to get to the H content and ignore the story. This is probably what spurred other VNs that focus entirely on just that. Which in my opinion is a clear "stay about 810 miles away from me" sign.
So I say "Nay" to the main question which is "Should there be Ero/H in visual novels?" A VN doesn't need that type of content to be playable. Which is why I like Katawa Shoujo, and ef - a fairy tale of the two. The option to add or remove that content is a bliss.

Also the majority of these VN's are ports from their eroge counterparts but without the H-scenes. Quote:
Likewise there are also people who read those games without bothering with the H-scenes. So your exact point is? |

Can't argue there I just think it is.
My point is that VNs are selling to a good amount of people just because of that fact. Which some companies just go ahead and focus entirely on that content. Quite quick to respond though

Everyone loves sex. A good story and some amount of love making can go hand in hand.
Some games might overdo it, but that's applicable to any game in any aspect; so maybe finding the better ones or your favorite ones won't be that easy. Maybe it's not for you, not everyone plays shooting games either. But I think more people are inclined to be attracted to something like sex than guns. Perhaps some haven't played a 'good' eroge title but either way I think less people are willing to admit it even if they did and liked it
