Alien designer HR Giger dies at 74
Quote:
Zurich, Switzerland (May 14, Wed): The Swiss artist and designer of Ridley Scott's Alien, H. R. Giger, has died aged 74, a spokesperson at Giger's museum in Gruyere has confirmed.

He died in hospital on Monday after he fell down stairs at his Zurich home.

Born in 1940, Giger was best known for his 'Xenomorph' alien in Scott's sci-fi horror masterpiece for which he won a visual effects Oscar in 1980.

He studied architecture and industrial design in Zurich and was known for creating strange dreamscapes.

Kinda surprised more people aren't commenting on this. HR Giger's work basically ushered the creepy biological/mechanical style so often copied by many sci fi art nowadays.

RIP good man.

This video appears to be appropriate as homage to his art

Not only that, but the way he made the style so sexual had a lot of influence too. Not without controversy of course, but I'd easily put him up there with the most influential artists of the last century.

One of the greatest (or infamous) artists to ever live has died. I was a big fan of Geiger's, and am saddened by his passing. While his artwork is as macabre as it gets (some would erroneously label it "Satanic" which it is not), he brought to life the horrors that inspired his unique style through his paintings and was one of the most prolific airbrush artists I know of. An odd artist to say the least, he was an original in his own right and inspired many works of popular horror.

He will be sorely missed.

He's a great man. Rest in Peace..

Terrified by the first Alien movie, when I first watched it many years ago.

I've actually never really sat through a whole viewing of Alien, just not much of a movie guy, but I always thought the design for the alien was amazing. If you really think about it, designing an alien creature that truly looks... alien... is really, really hard to do. I have trouble even envisioning one that isn't tainted by others' ideas from pop culture. Ultimately, it takes a pretty damn creative mind to come up with a creature like that. If we find the alien equivalent of multicellular life on a strange planet, I suspect they will either be unimaginably strange to us, or have some commonalities to something already on Earth, based on convergent evolution. With all the life forms on this planet, it's a really fascinating subject to ponder.

All I know about HR Giger is his alien design, but for that alone he proved to have artistic genius.

All that freaky art he made...I heard that ever since he was young, he had dreams where he saw such bizarre, freaky, and grotesque imagery. Just came to him in his dreams and thus made him the artist that he is.

Is that true? Can anyone here verify that?

Yes he did.

To be honest I immensely disliked his art style and subject matter. My first exposure to it was his "Necronomicon", and after looking through it I thought "It reminds me of the Alien movie."

I was right. :\

AIRBRUSH? Good grief! I was always told his art is done with ink and charcoal!

How DO you keep your lines so straight and coherent when it's a spreading spray of vapors?

My respect for the man has just doubled!

No Aliens is my still all time favorite series. So, what does this mean for this franchise?

So long mate. I love your six-finger mouth-tongued tube-headed eye-less alien design. It gave me the absolute creeps the first time I see it on screen. Such a memorable experience

Nothing much. The Alien franchise (or is it Prometheus franchise now?) will keep going coz the studio still wants money.

Prometheus was good. I really liked that movie. And honestly think a lot of the reviews and complaints about it are illogical. Since the movie easily answers all the questions.

By this point Giger has been so influential that there's generations of artists who can copy/emulate his style. Perhaps not his imagination....but no one would want his inspirations, I think.

Boris Vallejo is another iconic artist that has spawned a legion of similar artists. If you've looked at a fantasy book cover in the last thirty years, it's highly probable he's either done it or it's been done by someone in his style.

Out of all of the ways for that man to die.. Before now I never did place much thought into him dying. That is probably due to most of my favorites already being dead and still living on through their masterpieces. But alas, be consumed by the worms well my dear Giger.
