99% of parents born in the mid 1900's will never understand cause they didn't have what we have today and had a completely different environment they grew up in.
That's just my take on it... My mom calls my anime stuff "toys" despite I told her they're statues...you DON'T make toys from vinyl or resin... |

^ well most older generations of chinese people hated japan for what happened in WW2 so the hate has carried onto the culture of japan as well...
good thing my parents are open minded...disliking the government not the culture

eh.. My parents are biased. they call anime "cartoons" they said we watch too much crap in Cartoon Network. I agree. Most of the shows on CN are pure crap with 0 moralities now unlike the shows they had before.
wish i could hand them a few anime titles but my parents refuse to touch anything "cartoons" with a 10-feet pole. |

It's always amusing to me when people say their parents have a problem with anime, because when I first started to really get in to it, my mother actually went and bought me some. She sat and watched Urotsukidoji with me, even. I was a young teen and she bought me one of the strangest hentai movies of all time, and one that is largely responsible for the negative view of anime being all sexual and messed up; at least here in Australia.
She never censored anything I watched as a child though, and it was one of the few titles she could find at the time (early 90s) so decided to get it anyway. Much hilarity ensured. |

well where should I start.
one thing is certain, friends and parents is totally different (just for the record I am 19 years old and live alone) couple weeks ago I was talking to some of my friends on MSN (Group-chatting) talking about what we were doing these days and for the nearest future. then I just said something I never should have even thought... I said: well to night I'm gonna watch some movies, play some games, eat dinner and see some Anime before I go to bed. ............. then there were silence... for about 2 minutes!! then my friend (Chris) says.... Alex (me), why are you watching cartoon characters like little girls and little boys doing it? I was like... WTF are you talking about? I watch Anime not freaking cartoon porn. and certainly not little girls and boys! i'm not a damn Perv. then again there were silence.... then after another 2 minutes. all my friends just leaves the conversation one by one. I was like: wtf? well for now 50% of all my freinds think i'm a perv I don't even bother too persuade them either. and now for the parents ^^ they don't care they don't know If they did know they would say: what? Japanese? what are they saying? tell me tell me! (100% sure that they would think I was a perv if they watch the Series I do) they wouldn't even have the IQ to see the Sub's and since I live alone, I watch as much Anime as I Like |

Anyway, simply do not bother with short minded people. It's not worth the time. As for my parrents... they know i watch it but do not say anything about it. I think they do not care much about what i watch Tho probably they think it's for little kids only judging from one or two remarks from my father Tho there is light at the end of the tunnel - at least our kids(refering to those who are not parrents yet, myself included) will have the oportunity to watch anime without feeling the need to hide it from their folks

My parents don't really care. They know I watch anime, but they have almost no idea what any of it actually is. Though I'd love to watch them sit through some of the juicier episodes of Higurashi just to see their faces, I don't bother trying to get them interested. I kinda don't want them to be interested in it, because they're already a bit nosey as it is, and I really can't believe that they haven't sat and watched every DVD I have in my absence by now. I never really inquired as to what they thought about it; probably that it's just cute cartoons (I think my mom's seen parts of Azumanga Daioh).

My mom is a big fan of anime.
Seeing Miyazaki movies like Totoro and Castle in the Sky has greatly influenced her opinion of anime - she thinks it's great. Sometimes, when I'm watching an anime, she'll walk by and see the face of one of the characters, and say "Cute!" She also likes the Japenese language. My dad sometimes sees me watching anime, but doesn't really seem to care. He seems to like it too, anyway. |

So ... yeah, there's not a whole lot of valid criticism there. At least modern cartoons don't carry on Jim Crow and WWII/Cold War era stereotypes and propaganda. |

SIEG HARUHI!!!
|
Well, i'm 24, going onto 25 and my parents are quite puzzled about their son's continued obsession with anime.
My dad thinks that my Gundam model collection are little more than toys, and grumbles every now and then as to why i am still playing with toys at my age. My mum is abit more understanding, knowing that my Gunpla collection is what i do to destress from sch and whatnot. She even commented once that she wished she had these kinds of models when she was a kid, especially after seeing my PG Wing Zero Custom and the details on it, especially on the fingers and feathered wings. She was rather bemused by the gigantic poster i have of Suzumiya Haruhi pasted in my room though...

My mom likes Fullmetal Alchemist, and she got a big laugh out of some of the parts of Great Teacher Onizuka that she saw.
My dad doesn't get it, but he doesn't seem to really care either. He's never been much if a television guy anyways... |
