Who's the smarter one?
Shikamaru/Temari/Kabuto
Kabuto - outwits Kakashi in the encounter during the 2nd round of the Chunnin Exams and during the Sound attack. Shikamaru - acknowledged by Kakashi as good in his strategies... Temari - the intellectual match in the chunnin exams.. Just wondering... who would be the sharpest kunai among the 3? |

kabuto come second i think, or even first, given the fact that he managed to hide his abilities for so long among the jou/chuu/genins and the hokage, that's something special. Not to mention he was holding his own during the fight with tsunade.

First : Shika. He is the brain of the show. Second : Kabuto. More cunning than Shika, but not as smart overall. Third : Temari. What intellectual game ? That was Shika's show ! She's got owned from the moment Shika took action, and did exactly what he wanted her to do. She just waved randomly her fan and gladly fell into all his faints, not even thinking he might be smart than he looks until the very end. Against Tatsuya, she even refused to think about a plan with Shika and just outpowered her Intelligence wise, she is nothing extraordinary. I would rate the likes of Neji (once ridden of his superiority complex), Shino and Sakura (she is pretty smart. Remember she managed to clear the first exam without cheating, which is something genins are not supposed to be able to do. She is too emotional pre-timeskip to fully use her analytical abilities though) ahead of her. And I am only talking about the genins here. |

Well, I can't, Kishimoto never compared their intelligence, so it's all speculations, but so far, Kabuto's tactics relied more on Orochimaru (the blood thing against Tsunade was not Kabuto's idea) and his trust in his healing abilities. (despite watching the Rasengan once, he dismissed it until it was too late. Shika takes everything that happens in consideration and plans ahead). He knows how irritable Manda is but doesn't talk accordingly as well. That's not a very smart move.
He has never been seen establishing a battle plan yet. He is good at mind games, but for me that's all. He has yet to prove his worth as a tactician like Shikamaru did. |

Outside of Shikamaru being number one, it's hard to rank intelligence. Kishimoto has gone out of his way to portray Shika as the genius of Naruto.
As for the others. Kabuto vs. Kakashi is very interesting. Kakashi put himself on Shika's level, but recent events don't bare this out. Kabuto proved himself against Tsunade. But he is more of a specialist in his field rather than an all around genius. Temari would be on the Shino/Asuma level. Kishimoto refers to her as a "female Shikamaru" but to be honest, I don't see it. Their kids will be little geniuses though. If you could group the most intelligent Naruto characters, I guess it could go like this. >200 (Unmeasurable genius) Shikamaru 180 - 200 (Highest genius) Kakashi, Kabuto 165 - 179 (High genius) Orochimaru, Itachi, Haku 155 - 164 (Genius) Sakura, Shizune, Tsunade 145 - 154 (Low Genius) Temari, Shino, Asuma, Kurenai There are certain characters I can't rank because of manga spoilers. Interesting that Sasuke's stats for intelligence in the databook aren't very high. In fact, he's sort of an idiot and not much better then Naruto. I guess all the brains in the Uchiha clan went to Itachi. Neji is only around average intelligence. He only looked smart in the Sasuke Retrieval Arc because he was on a team with Kiba, Choji, and Naruto. Last edited by DeDe; 2007-02-01 at 16:03. |

Naruto has good brain for strategy though most of them are related to Kage Bunshin. He can be brilliant at times when the situation is dire. In other times, I'll take Konohamaru over Naruto in a heart beat. Sasuke seems like a specialist when it comes to mixing up ninjutsu and taijutsu. There are plenty of good example of that fact, but the example of Sasuke's special trait can be found in the fight against Orochimaru, in the forest of death. I wonder how scary he will be when he starts mixing up genjutsu with his already formidable skill for taijutsu and ninjutsu. Shikamaru, without a doubt, is the brain amongst his peer. Shika's skill is very limited compared to Sasuke's, Naruto's, or Neji's. Most of his opponent always have serious advantage over him and yet, he overcame most of those opponent with sheer intelligence and strategy. Shika takes his, otherwise silly, shadow-bind skill to a new height with his brain and opens up the Shadow-bind jutsu to an infinite possibilities. He is, without a doubt, the brain among his peer.. and most likely the brain-child of this series. Kabuto and Kakashi are just too mysterious to gauge their respective intelligence. That said, Kakashi looked mighty stupid when he fought Zabuza by getting trapped in that water prison, but in their second confrontation, it was Kakashi turn to make Zabuza look stupid. Kabuto had the upper hand when he escaped Kakashi's grasp from the hospital. In that small confrontation, Kabuto thought out 3 steps ahead of Kakashi. Sakura-chan has got the brain for learning and memorizing. She also demonstrated some flare of intelligence and strategy when she fought against one of the sound nin in the forrest of death. Lee... well, he is noble. Even the likes of Naruto can create serious problem for this sweet-hearted hero when it comes to using brain. Neji has serious talent. He is called a "genius" by his clan. His fighting skill is mostly limited to taijutsu, but his taijutsu is special. He also uses good rationale to reach to a conclusion as was seen when he fought Spiderman (Kidomaru). A good brain gives rise to proper rationalizing.

The smartest? I wouldn't say Kabuto...leastwise, he may be smart but he doesn't have much common sense.
I'd say each person has their strengths...Kakashi is a technique genius, Shika is strategy, Tsunade and Kabuto are medicine, Oro is a developmental genius (having created some pretty "out there" stuff)... In terms general intellegence (aside from possibly the Akatsuki leader, whom we don't really know about), I'd say the smartest person is probably Nara, but that's far from the end of the discussion. *shrugs* |

You are throwing number as if IQ is some sort of parking lot sale.. The fact that Kishimot gave Shikamaru a 200 plus IQ was to make it look so big to even believe it was true. If you are going to put other characters IQ, none of them surpasses the 140 Mark, the tactics/strat/smarts you have seen in others are more on Experience, rather than Intelligence.

Trying to gauge the other characters IQ's was only specualtion and opinion. Nothing more. A message board without speculation and opinion would have about three posts. It very unlikely Kakashi has an IQ anywhere between 180 and 200. There is nothing is the series that suggests this. But if the author tells us that Shika has over a 200 IQ, then we hear about how Kakashi has a similar brain, then it stands to reason he should at least be in the ballpark with intelligence. Pure fantasy, but whatever. Quote:
In the West we think of genius meaning pure intelligence. Like an Einstein or Stephen Hawkin. Quote:

So, in order to make it more realist and parting for the fact that Kurenai was greatly surprise by Shikas IQ level, this means that The IQs in the Naruto universe are a reflection of the real world IQs, meaning the gauge you said, it’s a little over-exaggerated for the Shinobies you listed, I mean. Haku, 165– 179? Not in his wildest dream.
