you just need one more letter:
うめる

or in katakana:
ウメル

both sound like "oo-me-ru".

I have another translation question I hope some kind person can answer. The line in question is:

こんなののどこがいいんだか...

Context - Said by a girl to her brother. The brother is going out (don't know where, but it is implied that he is meeting someone) and his sister is worried about him (don't know why). Near as I can figure out, she is asking if he will be somewhere where she can call him, or he can call her. But I'm certain that I'm not parsing this sentence properly. Can someone please help?

"What's so good about her?" or more liberally translated "What makes you attracted to her?"

Thank you very much, Sylf. I missed the meaning of that line completely. I'll have to backtrack and see how I went so far off course....

The actual meaning of the kanji is sprouting or budding.

In the context you are talking of, it's the moe pronounciation, and it does mean someone attractive.

For more detail on the slang then you probably care for, you can look to Wiki

I know it's one of the ending verbs, but a character in Shakugan no Shana uses it in about 80% of her sentences. (10% being arimasen and 10% being nothing special)
its just a character habit that she attaches 'de arimasu' to the end of all the sentences that she says. in my opinion i guess its also to emphasize whatever she says. Plus those sentence ending particles like yo, na, ka etc, Wilhermina actually puts it behind her 'de arimasu' as in 'de arimasu na', 'de arimasu ka' etc..

err is this chinese? haha

it seems to me like:

1. xxxx (think it means master) is very strong/powerful.
2. the plans/discussions by the generals have all been discovered (by you).
3. (dunno what third line means. literal translation seems to be: it's too innocent...but i think it sort of mean taking too much trouble to travel all the way (in line with line 4) )
4. we were transferred from the west side, and now we had to turn back to the west.

あまのがわ (amanogawa), if you don't care about whether it's the form being used today, that's just off the top of my head.

If you want the other terms try wwwjdic

Yes it does. If you write it with kanji, it becomes 天の川.

[Study] - Japanese Speakers Needed!

Hello, everyone. I apologize about tying up this forum with this, but...

I'm posting this here because I'm running into brickwalls and major hurdles towards the end of my semester as a linguistics student. For my Conceptual Theories of Metaphor class, I've been given the task of conducting a study of native and non-native speakers of the Japanese language and how they translate certain things from one language to another. The only problem with this is I can't include my own translation because that would basically make for a somewhat biased research. So, I need some people who are native speakers as well as people who are fluent in the language to assist me with this task. Below is the information regarding the assigment::

Quote:
Metaphorical Analysis: A Study of Native/Non-Native Speakers Interpretations
LIN356

OVERVIEW

Thank you for taking the time to assist me in my research for my final exam. The hypothesis that I am trying to determine with this project has to do with how native Japanese speakers and non-native Japanese speakers translate from one language to another. My belief is that there is something that is lost in translation when a native-English speaker, who understands Japanese, translates. Therefore, in order to test this hypothesis, I am giving the same two articles (a poem and a song) to a group of native Japanese speakers and non-native Japanese speakers to translate.

INSTRUCTIONS

Below are the two pieces that I have selected for translation. The basis that I need for this is a literal translation as well as a metaphorical translation (if possible). I understand that there are certain things which cannot be translated accurately, or if they are translated, they don’t have the same meaning. One such example that I can think of would be the stanza from a song entitled “Future”. 「水面のざわめきは風の歌」. The conclusion that I came to from this particular line is that it is an image metaphor, which actually loses its meaning when translated into English (The song of the wind is a ripple on the waters surface).
If there are ambiguities with a particular line, please make a note of it if at all possible. I chose these two particular literary pieces because I believe they are something that is more challenging to translate because of the deep meaning that they have.

CONCLUSION

Based on the results from this study, I will be able to not only show different understandings of how people view metaphors, in terms of their own interpretation, but also how non-native speakers change or perceive foreign metaphors and try and convey them in their own language.
Next, here are the two items that I've selected. They are both from Hikaru Utada, and I believe that they are both powerful pieces to use for this excercise.

So, if you've made it this far, the things that I'm looking for are a literal translation of both pieces and a metaphorical translation. The point is to see what is lost in translation from the perspective of a non-native speaker who may be fluent in the language, but doesn't understand all the metaphors.

To those that help, please provide a name (doesn't have to be real) so you can be credited in the end. If you wish to use your real name, please feel free to PM me. It will only be used for this project and nothing more. I'm hoping that I can get some people to assist me with this because it's really important to me and my teacher is riding my case about it because it's something he's really interested in seeing.

Many thanks if you help,

So why do people fight, anyway?
Perhaps the meaning of existence lies within their will to fight.
People feel a sense of accomplishment through battle.
And it’s also a fact that the ones actually fighting are never perceived as being tainted.

Archaic Chinese? What?

A coworker of mine has a Chinese tapestry at home that was smuggled out to Hong Kong in the late sixties where it was bought for twenty five American dollars. Now, there is a phrase/verse/whatever on it. Since I know absolutely no chinese, I can kinda interpret some of the kanji based on what I know from Japanese, but the rest is just beyond me. So, if anyone knows that this means, a translation would be great!

Someone told me that it is archaic Chinese or something. I scan show you a picture of the warlord on it if that will help...

Say "Reseed" in Different Languages?

Nowadays, there are a lot of websites in other languages providing the torrents we seek. Since the war waged against P2P is raging right now in Japan and U.S., pretty soon we are going to have to learn to say "reseed" in another language.
I, in fact, need to learn to say it in Spanish, but it's not really a word that would appear in the dictionary, but that's just tough luck... I will do it the American way and just ask them to "reseed."
So just how do you say "reseed" in different languages? Can anyone answer that?
