Well, as soon as the priest said "ano kata wa..." I jumped to the conclusion that Rio is someone who can be recognised on sight... and that the sister Rio is praying for is Princess Iria. Would help explain the "suspicious" assignments.

Though the simplest way to translate "ano kata wa..." would be "that person is..." the particular words used either mean the priest is very humble or that the person he's referring to is rather exalted.

A very impressive episode, it gives us a lot of insight on the past war, and even a lot of hints as to why the world is the way it is now.

Does anyone else thing they are implying Alien invaders of some sort? Human tech looked pretty advanced with super-mobile spider-tanks, but then they all got blown away by an energy beam!

I'm pretty sure that links to the Dragon vs the Giant Spider in the myth as well.

Yea I kinda the feeling of implying invasion by them or something similar in nature for that happened.
It was a really good episode though pretty different from others.
And I wonder too if Rio's sister was that girl with how the priest acted.

It was an interesting episode though... Lots of story and development for the characters and setting... Even if the setting is pretty something... Be it the SF robots or the fact the girls think people can hear that trumpet over the loud roars of explosions around them...

Its still very much okey in my opinion. What's bothering me is that no matter how many times I watch it seems to be frame skipping? or just out of sync somehow. Kinda of a shame, I like the song. Also...

It was more "build from looted/scavenged old parts" and "to be able to operate in city ruins" for "modern" tanks though. But type 0 girls have possible can do it... with experienced crew, which girls are not.

Well another pretty serious episode. The flashback was pretty ugly with that captain losing everything in an instant. She really was just lucky. Considering the shot was coming from her direction it really was just a fluke she survived. But the flashback with a flashback seemed more interesting. Makes you wonder just what the hell happened. Who were they fighting? Seems like a seriously advanced group considering you had spider tanks vs laser beams. In the end the world is left in ruin and people are still fighting with what remains.

Wonder where the series will go as we move along. Some flashbacks and so far people just trying to survive in a terrible environment.

Whoa.... That was easily the best episode of the series so far, and while it answered some questions (not least the identity of the mystery blonde woman we've seen in flashbacks in previous episodes) but it opens up new mysteries...

There was a hint that Noel might have something of a back-story in the war, too.

Felicia has war trauma having her entire tank crew dead. Traped underground a dead soldier apologizes to her that they could not save the world. The Bugler who is identified as Princess Iria saves her.

It is becoming apparent that the Fortress Maiden's of the current genration being assigned together is not a coincidence. Three of the five have a connection to the princess. All that is left is Noel and Kureha's back stories.

I'm thinking the princess is Rio's sister. We already saw Rio's sick mother which she has a trauma episode when Kanata gets sick.

As for how civilization came to this point I think the common anime premise of an inhuman enemy pushing humanity to the brink of extinction is applicable.

It wouldn't surprise me if the legendary Fire Maidens were schoolgirls drafted into the military and saved Seize long ago. Thus the tradition began of only females manning the former school now fortress outpost.

Ok, the tone of the anime changed radically in one episode and I'm glad it did, but there is one thing that REALLY bother me :

So...the giant creature from the legend really did existed? "Did", being simply some years ago and there is nothing too "mystical" in that anymore if the army was fighting against it only 4 or 5 years ago. On top of that, this creature could easily blow an entire city in just one hit? Pretty scary .
There is the possibility of that being simply an allegory of some sort, but since we've seen the skeleton of one of those in episode 1, I kind of doubt it.
The show is really getting more and more interesting, but I still wonder where things are heading...

you're saying those pic and the whole scene of war shown during the "dead soldier" speech are part of the Old Era war? War that possibly took place between humans and something else (humans, aliens) which were backup-ed by the mystical beast (or was the opponent that monster itself) ?
And after that, those who survived fought among themselves?
That makes for a poor portray of the humanity u_u".

It makes sense, but I got somehow confused by the fact that the tanks, with their spider-like capacities, were the same during the flashback and during Felicia's battle. But if the world had been at war ever since the Old Era, it's not that surprising that the technology somehow stagnate.
