Looks like people's enthusiasm has waned down quite a bit after 6 episodes?
Anyway I'd agree episode 6 is the best of all content wise. There's this chemistry in the pacing that the other episodes lack, and thanks to the omission of cheesy drama we finally have some decent story. I haven't looked at the original source yet, but if the rest of the season turns out to be like this perhaps the series will pick up more attention down the road. |

a bunch of stand alone stories where Violet isn't the POV character, but instead you get the observations of the people she writes for. they describe how she's beautiful, quiet, etc. so you build your own story of why she's like that. then you get to another standalone where you learn she was once a soldier (i'm personally super hyped for this chapter). and then, finally you get the background chapters about her past. the director explicitly stated he avoided this so viewers will understand and care for her before they dive into the stand alone chapters. i understand the decision behind it, but it ended up hurting the overall series because the quality of the first few eps were low.

As an anime-only viewer, I share none of these complaints. I wouldn't say this show is especially compelling, but it does move nicely along with the exception of that strange hiatus where Violet mysteriously learns how to be an ace letter-writer. But these constant complaints about differences with the LN are, once again, tiresome. Written works and adaptations are different things -- get over it.

Finally done watching. And it was a nice episode, as if wasn't obvious enough I doubt 'that person' is dead. Hope the the second half keeps up the pace.
Its pretty telling when the reception of this episode eclipses the previous ones. Not like it was such a big feat with the bar being that low.

Sometimes you have to be in a certain mood to watch certain anime. Violet Evergarden is not something that I try to watch immediately as soon as it's available. It's not the exciting type nor is it the funny type. However, whenever I get around to actually watching the episode, I'm always just so captivated that my full attention is on it, and I don't even realize how much time has passed until the episode is over.
This was another one of those wonderful episodes. I'm beginning to wonder if I should wait for all the episodes and just watch it in one go. You just want the next episode as soon as you finish one, but leave it a couple days, and you're not sure if you want to watch the next episode right away.

Nice bridging of details. Everything, from the anime-original content to the adapted material, was connected flawlessly. Now the conflict is solidly established, with Violet painfully realizing the grief she had caused against those she had killed... and those whose stories she had abruptly ended.
Does Violet Evergarden, Ender of Life's Tales, deserve a proper, happy ending? It takes a commendable amount of self-awareness to consider her job as hypocritical. And I cannot blame her for thinking that she does not deserve such a quiet life after slaughtering countless lives. But Claudia Hodgins knows that there's life beyond the battlefield, and the CH Postal Company exists to give her and the Dolls the quiet post-war life they deserve. But with Major Gilbert's fate still uncertain, it would be difficult to settle things with Violet. Only time will tell the truth that only Gilbert and Violet shared before their abrupt separation. P/S: Question: I just noticed that the laces of Violet's boots run from the middle to either side. I've almost thought that her bootlaces go straight up. Is this a design choice by the character designer or do boots actually have the kind that is laced up to the sides?

If you told me that the final 10 minutes of the episode was part of a movie I would have believed you easily. Everything from the part when Violet tried to literally walk no water to her refusing to believe that Gilbert is dead is perhaps some of the most powerfully animated elements Kyoto Animation has ever produced.
As to whether he really is dead, well, I don't think it's really set in stone yet. So if this episode is mostly about guilt, then it looks like Violet is also starting to learn about another, more powerful emotion. Hope.

Definitely a WAY better episode than the last episode. Violet jumping into the lake was so beautifully animated, and the playwright finding his peace was pretty emotional. RIP, Olivia.
I knew that Gilbert was dead, but when Claudia mentioned that they couldn't identify or find the body....I'm starting to gain a slight sliver of hope he escaped. But there's no way given how immobilized he was in his final moments. He's dead! |

This was the best episode of the series so far. Oscar's story was highly emotional and presented in a very tasteful manner. This was also a great episode for Violet, who is becoming more and more self-aware and realizing the gravity of her past actions. Nobody can blame her for what she's done though, she has been brainwashed and used as a weapon by adults. Of course, Violet herself doesn't see it that way, and it doesn't help there is already someone blaming her. And as if her anguish wasn't already high enough, she know learns her beloved Major is dead (though he obviously isn't. It's fiction: no body, no death).
I'm curious to see how she will deal with the news. The way she reacted was classic denial, but it could turn into hope further down the line.

what a beautifully animated episode. starting from the flashback of Olivia, it gave me a very Up-like feeling: an entire story compressed into several minutes. then the portion with her running on water was beautiful. and now she is beginning to realize what she had done previously and the impact she perhaps had on others. i agree with Marcus. this ep did a great job bridging the anime original stuff and the novel.

The phrase "thousands and thousands" still haunt me, as someone who experienced seeing a loved one deteriorate (my grandmother, due to mild strokes and dementia) over several years.
Anyone would be willing to spend thousands and thousands of moments with someone you cherish, especially if those moments are no longer possible.

This was the best episode so far for me. Oscar's case was the most emotional for and was well presented. The culmination of it all, with Violet attempting to walk on water and the way the scene impacted Oscar was powerful.
Gilbert is most likely alive considering how no body was found, but the problem is less whether or not is he alive, but can Violet learn to live without him? I don't really have a problem with him coming back, but I prefer if he made his return after Violet has taken his last words to her about living to heart.
