Facts need to be faced. Watamote is a wonderful series and deserves better, but in Japan it's strictly niche, and not the niche the anime industry is after.

As much as I generally don't care about dubs, I must say I'm interested in what they can do with Tomoko's voice. Izumi Kitta set the bar very high, so getting someone to even come close to it in the English dub is gonna be tough.

I don't know if you picked up the Yen Press release of the manga, but Nico Tanigawa drew a picture of exactly that with a thank-you for American fans. |

If anyone isn't familiar with Brritney Karbowski's voice work, she's known to voice Black Star from Soul Eater. However, her best forte are usually tsundere characters like Misaka Mikoto from A Certain Magical Index, Rin Natsume from Little Busters, and Angel Beats Yuri (her typecast is usually high school girls who are either a tsundere or have big egos). Her lesser known typecast are lolis such as Last Order from A Certain Magical Index and Noa Hiiragi from MM! (which by the way, Hilary Haag normally voices these characters). Thus being said, I could see Ms. Karbowski voicing Tomoko in the dub (but there is a chance someone else will voice her in the dub since that was only a trailer and voice acting in trailers don't finalize into the dub cast).

That's quite good, actually. If this is anywhere close to what it's gonna sound like in the final version, this could become very interesting.

I thought the voice was god awful. There is no emotion in that voice. This is why I hate dubbed so much. I am trying to become a voice actor myself, so I can all I am going to do is nit pick at this for days. It is at least better than the Death Note dubbed, I nearly died and had a heart attack. It sounded like the voice actor of L had been choked and gagged and forced to speak through a sock.

Watamote Vol.3 placed first on the NY Times Best Seller List this week.
http://www.nytimes.com/best-sellers-...anga/list.html Good to see it doing well over here. Even if it won't benefit from it. |

BONES has always thought outside the box, but anime (and Japanese business in general) is very, very bad at it. There should be someone in the development loop smart enough to see that Watamote is a potential hit with American TV audiences and push to take advantage of it, but I wouldn't hold your breath waiting for it to happen.

So did any one else listen to Natsu Matsuri on repeat, while watching the 4th of July Fireworks?
I checked ANN, so far they only have Tomoko listed for the dub cast, it's listed as Monical Rial, She has a lot of high voiced characters under her belt, but she has a good range, though I suspect she'll get a lot of use out of her "Stocking" voice for Tomoko

Confirmed by Monica Rial herself, she's voicing Tomoko Kuroki.
Here's the TV Tropes page if you are curious. She's basically Sentai Filmwork's Stephanie Sheh since she's known for her high-pitch voice and often casted as shy, young girls early in her voice acting career. Thus being said, She has a relatively wide vocal range and can pull deeper and/or tomboyish voices when necessary.

Dub cast of Watamote via ANN:
Quote:
David Matranga is probably best known for his deep voice. He got a lot of fame for his role as Tomoya Okazaki from Clannad. He's also been working on a few Funimation titles, with Bertolt Hoover from Attack on Titan being one of his most recent roles. Emily Neves is often typecast as young girls who are often soft-spoken and don't talk a lot (and some are very shy). She's also well-known for her role Kotomi Ichinose from Clannad as well. And a fun factoid, her role as Yuu Naruse will be her third role she shares with Kana Hanazawa (which funnily enough, both Emily Neves and Kana Hanazawa shares the same typecast as well). Her other two shared Hanazawa roles included Angel from Angel Beats and Ayase Shinomiya from Guilty Crown. Also, she's the ADR Director for this show. Shelley Calene-Black is an experienced voice actress who's known for her role as Mireille Bouquet from Noir and the title character from Medaka Box. Like David Matranga, her voice acting is normally relatively deep and she's normally cast as adult women, or teenage badasses. Ashley Miller, Juliet Simmons, John Johnston, Johnny De La Cerda, and Houston Hayes are relative new names. However, I can tell you that the last two had worked in Majestic Prince (with Houston Hayes as one of the main male leads). If you see Blake Shepard's name, chances are that he's often typecast as either a bishonen or a harem protagonist (the other voice actor who shares the harem lead protagonist typecast is Josh Grelle, who also happen to work with Sentai Filmworks). Some of his best known roles include Kyousuke Natsume from Little Busters, Otonashi from Angel Beats!, and Taro Sado from MM! And according to TV Tropes, his voice acting is very similar to Johnny Yong Bosch's :P. Carli Mosier mostly voices teenage girls in anime, some of her roles are tsundere. In fact, one of her most recent roles is Rin Tohsaka from Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya spinoff (I have no idea why Sentai Filmworks did not outsource that dub to Bang Zoom like they did in the past a few titles that were dubbed in Los Angeles). Her name sometimes appear in some of the Funimation's dubs. Kyle Jones is better known for his ADR Directing work rather than his voice acting though. Clint Bickham is known to voice young boy roles in a similar vein like Greg Ayres. His best known roles include Haru from tsuritama. Renji Asou from the ef tales series, and Yoshifumi Aoki from Kokoro Connect. Also, he even joked about his voice being high-pitched enough to voice women (which he hasn't done yet, but he voiced a flamboyant character named O.D from Gatchaman Crowds). I'm not too familiar with Corey Hartzog's roles, but he seems to voice a large variety of roles. So it's really hard to typecast him (although I do notice a trend that most of his roles are often teenage boys). Leraldo Anzaldua is probably best well-known for his role as Takashi Komuro from Highschool of the Dead and Kengo Miyazawa from Little Busters. David Wald works with both Sentai Filmworks and Funimation. Most of his roles are either villains or those who are overly hammy. Also, like David Matranga, his voice acting is also naturally deep as well (which can easily explain why most of his roles are either badasses or villains). Anyways, I would like to happily point out that with a few rare exceptions (Monica Rial, Hilary Haag, Tiffany Grant, David Matranga, Emily Neves, Josh Grelle, Chris Ayres, Greg Ayres, and Luci Christian). Most voice actors who normally work with Sentai Filmworks aren't as famous or well-known when compared to many of the Los Angeles based voice talent and those who work with Funimation. This is because Sentai Filmworks is a much smaller company when compared to the main two big players (Funimation and Viz Media), so they don't have much resources to promote their voice actors like what Funimation and Bang Zoom does. I can tell, however, that most of Sentai Filmworks dubs are good at finding newer name talents (other being Bang Zoom). If there are any voice actors/actresses I didn't cover or something you want to discuss, please let me know.

Just watched it as well. A thrilling tale of escapism through chuunibyou and mistaken identity. I was wondering how it would be set up but the ending did not disappoint.
I really wish that we could see more of Mokocchi and Komi-something-san's interaction.

This OVA was epic in all aspects. Definitely worth the long wait.
I loved the pre-OP bit, where Tomoko is basically writing stuff for 'season 2', but visuals indicate it's most likely never going to happen, making this a brilliant case of fourth wall shattering. Also liked how we got another Epic OP Transition, like in episode 10. Nice how this episode was shown from both the boy's perspective and hers. Funny how her trying to act cool and distant only made him like her more. "He'll totally think I'm cute and mysterious." I think it's safe to say he actually did, Tomoko. Heck, this is probably the closest you've ever gotten to experiencing love at first sight. And then, we see that she was already the lovable idiot we know her to be today. Stay classy, Tomoko. I doubt we'll ever get more from this, but if we do, I'd welcome it.
