What do you consider "a while"? Yes, the ink can eventually dry out, no idea how long it takes though (this is probably the reason ink jet cartridges have "sell by" dates on them for stores)

Ink Jets tend to dry out if you don't use the cartridges in about a month or two...but generally, if you don't use them in about a month, you might run into some problems. That is once they are open. If they are still in their air tight packages, about six months to a year.

Does that help you any?

Buy those refillable custom cartridges. At least you can save money.

Even Toner have this problem if they are left in the machine and not used for a period of time. However, Toner can still stay if they are still sealed or you print a page every once in the while.

I'm pretty sure toner is dry to start with, so I don't think problems caused by not being used has anything to do with it drying out.

Toner does have drying problems, like stated above you, jpwong, only in this case, you'd have to worry about clogging and drying. A general rule would be that, if you don't plan on using it for more than a week or two, just print something, like a test page or something similar. You can check to see if it still works and calibrate it at the same time, two birds with one stone, or more.

Well, I'll take your word for it, I've never had any problems with my toner cartridges and I don't print for weeks at a time sometimes.
