do u guys turn off ur computers?
i hav two questions...
1. how often do u shut down ur comp? bcuz sometimes my comp will go a month without shutting down once lol.... its lasted pretty long about 3 yrs. 2. also is it better to turn off ur monitor off and on every hour or so (i usually hav to go on the internet every hour or somethin) or to just leave it on the whole day and then turn it off when i sleep?my last monitor broke a few months ago and i got a new one so i want this one to last as long as possible |

1.
Laptop: shut down when not in use Desktops: standy/hibernate when not in use, shut down end of day Servers: on 24/7, reboot for updates, shut down when not needed 2. if you leave your computer and come back every hour, try something like standby or hibernate. itll save power thus money, and itll make your hardware last longer thus save money. |

Ever since I changed towers, I never bother to turn it off. The old one used to be too noisy to sleep next to, but this one is quiet enough that it doesn't bother me. I mostly let it run torrents and such all night, or install updates, or download Steam games.

I keep mine on except when I leave the house for just in case if something would happen ..
I'm lazy and I don't want to turn it on several times per day, and since I spent ALOT time on computer anyway, it's not like there are many chances to turn it off. I leave it on nights too to seed torrents or download something.

I leave my Mac mini G4 on 24/7 since it's my torrent, file sharing (home network only) and XMPP server. It doesn't cost much since the idle power consumption is only 32w, which isn't much compared to a regular computer tower. However, the newer models are more power efficient than the one I'm currently using.

When I was in school I didn't since I used it so much, but now that I work I do since I am only home five hours of the day (aside from sleeping). I usually hibernate instead of total shut down though. The computer uses more power to turn on so that's why it's good to keep it on or use the stand by feature if you use it a lot. But if you are like me and won't use it for many hours, then it's better to shut it off.
We need a poll added to this topic!

http://techreviewer.com/viewpage.cfm/ui/040226130555 http://michaelbluejay.com/electricity/computers.html I turn it off completely when I don't use it. So not power on it either, I have a switch in between which also protects it from any possible lighting that might fry it if it hits the house or any other form of power outage. Also because if I turn it off there is still a light burning inside my computer.. I think the Motherboard, no idea... I stand by when I go away for a couple hours, sometimes have it running for a week to render things but that is not often, if downloading something big I run it for the afternoon while away from work and set it to go to standby upon completion |

Left it on 24/7 back in Graduate housing because I had AC blaring 24/7 and didn't have to pay for power. Now that I'm back at home, I only turn it on when I use it because it heats up my room by like 5 degrees and my family does need to pay for power.
