To be honest she only cross dressed for one volume. And if anything Charlotte shows more signs of being a Yamato Nadesico than the other heroines, maybe except for Houki.

Spoiler for About Houki & Rinn...:

Houki and Rinn were both more or less helped by Ichika when classmates were making fun of them constantly
(Houki for being unsociable personality, Rinn for being a foreigner)

As the story begins, Houki is not as much into Kendo as she was before, since it primarily served as the only connection that link her to Ichika.
It also served as a mean to vent her frustration caused by not being able to see him.
(Being a family member of globally important person, - Tabane - her whereabout was kept confidential and she was unable to contact Ichika, who was just an ordinary boy back then)

After the reunion with Ichika, Kendo mainly serves as inhibitor for surpressing her tendency to resort to violence.

I believe the term cross-dresser would refer to someone who likes or enjoys doing cross-dressing.

Since Charlotte was forced to fake her gender, and she wants to be viewed as a girl to Ichika once the masquerade is over, I don't think it's fair to call her cross-dresser.

That part of wanting to be viewed as a girl to Ichika is the main reason for her revealing true gender to everyone else, at the risk of becoming a criminal...

Let's face it. Although she was forced by Dunoa Industry, she conned her own government... the lose of face for French government after finding out that the only other male IS pilot in the world - a French citizen - turned out to be just a girl would be quite emabarassing.
The French government might consider it as a mild treason.

Luckily, IS Academy is outside jurisdiction of French government (or any government, for that matter) and French government can't subpoena her unless they get her to consent. (which she won't)

So, although she is most likely put to jail upon returning to France, she is at least safe for 3 years, until she graduate from IS Academy, which is probably enough time to come up with a way to solve the problem.


Oh yeah, that means Dunoa Industy - that's the ones who engineered this scam, and they are located right inside France... - is toast, since it was already being pressed hard by its government for not being able to produce a viable 3rd Gen. IS.
(And that was the reason why it transferred Charlotte to IS Academy as a boy in the first place, so she could get close to Ichika and steal data from Byakku Shiki)

Well, considering how they mistreated Charlotte, I'd say 'Let them burn.'

Also, keep in mind that the basic setting of IS - only female can use IS - and its effect on sociaty and the resulting social status could cause many key heroines in this series to show 'Tsundere' attribute.
(Although it wouldn't matter much because many of them have tsundere attribute as their characteristics anyway...)

Well, not much is known about the detailed information about the distribution of IS over the world (i.e. exact number of IS for each countries)

So far, We know that Germany has total of 10 ISs inside the country, with 3 of them assigned to Schwarz Hase, the German Special IS Force.

Laura is the commander of Schwarz Hase, and this unit is considered as the most powerful single military unit inside the contry.

Also, there are about 320 ISs deployed in military throughout the world, while 145 or so ISs are being used as trainer or testbed for R&D.

The 10 ISs in German could be sum of combat-ready IS and trainer/testbed type.
(I'd say that each nation of moderate natonal power would have at least 1 IS for training purpose, since they would have to use IS to determine the apptitude of its female citizen - potential pilot candidates - and preferably, they would do it on their own, not relying on other nation to decides which of its citizens becomes IS pilot)


It is very likely that nations with large territory (like US or Austrailia) are provided with more ISs than smaller nations, since defending such territory would require more force quantitatively.

But it is unlike that currrent superpower such as US would receive enough ISs to maintain the peace-keeping duties overseas.
(Those countries would get just enough ISs to defend their territory, which still would mean more ISs than smaller nations)

There is no detailed information about total output energy of IS core.

But the energy consumption rate (fuel efficiency) for each IS seems different. So far, the concept of increasing total energy reserve is not mentioned, so it is probably a function within the core which scientists(except for Tabane) can't touch yet.

At current level, it is difficult to determine if a given IS has just a very high energy reserve, or is optimized for defense.

IS designed with high defensive capability would take less damage than the ones designed for high mobility, thus draining less shield energy per same attack.

For example, Charlott's IS, equipped with defensive package Equalizer comes with augmented shielding system called 'Garden Curtain' which is set of 2 physical shiled panels and 2 energy shield panels, covering the foward arc.

In this case, any attack on forward arc would be blocked by these shields first.
(the main IS shield is likely to take no damage at all, or just a fraction of residual damage)

In that way, it could be viewed as her IS having much higher shield energy than an average IS.

Well, it is difficult to say, since there are no chart with numbers specifying what kinds of attack deals hou much damage.

Also, keep in mind that IS is way more maneuverable than any conventional platforms, meaning any weapon platform with nowhere enough firepower to be a threat to an IS is about equally hopless when it comes to actually scoring a direct hit on an IS.

DVD/BD is already on preorder stage, (BTW, I already ordered vol.1) and there are 6 volumes in total. (2 episodes per volume)

True, I'd love to see more episodes, and if the condition was right, I'd say go for it, but you see, there are problems...


1. budget

Let's compare IS with an actual 25-episode work, Macross Frontier.

They are made by roughly the same staff, so I'd say the quality of work per budget would be about the same.

Well... I seriously doubt that a completely unproven, unknown work such as IS could get similar production budget as a work with all-popular 'Macross' brand printed on it.

And Macross F did fine with their budget, but I saw lots of recycled CGs, especially toward the end of the serise. Possible budget problem?


2. Contents

Simply put, there is nowhere enough contents to do a 25-episode work with the original material currently out.

Sure, they could do lots of anime-only centents, but I think the kinds of contents hastely created to fill the gap tends to lose quality.

And the already small budget would be stretched even thinner...

I said 'about' and '~or so' term becuase I can't remember the exact numbers from LN.

And yes, there are several ISs being used in IS Academy as trainer, but not all R&D is being done in there.

Many powerful nations have their own R&D facilities. You could say all nations that have developed IS on their own have such facilities, and you can't run them without having some kind of testbed IS(or core)

As mentioned before, There are no concrete information about which country has how many ISs.. and that include the information about those nations not mentioned at all.

If I had to guess, every nation with a working government that could project diplomatic influence would have their own IS. (or at least they would have been provided with IS core)
(Even if they can't develop IS on their own, they could do a license production for popular IS from other nations, and according to LN, French 2nd Gen. IS, Rafale-Revive (It is the basic variant of what Charlotte uses, and Maya's personal IS is this one) is one of most popular 2nd Gen. ISs with about 3rd largest share in world market. The LN says that 7 nations(apprantly other than it's maker, France) are license-producing Rafale-Revive and 12 nations are using it as their official IS.

Obviously, if nations can produce their own IS, then they don't have to do a license-production, so those 7 and 12 nations would fall into the countries that have IS core, but not enough technology(or economical power) to develop their own IS.

(BTW, The sales of IS are for frame and Equalizer only, not the core. the buyers would have to install their cores)

Think about nations that has adaquate military, but not enough technology to develop advanced military hardware.

Give or take estimation is fine to just put things into picture for me. But if you can recall the exact numbers, then that'd be great.

The IS Academy at least need adequate numbers of IS so they can train pilots, though. But I'm going to guess that trainer type IS are capable of being used by anyone (like in general), so each class have schedules to use those IS. Only representative pilots should have their own IS that they're given to test or to compete in the Mondo Grosso.

Regarding my question, I meant how many countries are there that have been listed or mentioned in the LN who have IS or have been said/hinted to have IS, not from a guess. There are more than the ones that I listed, no?

I'd say they would do the short stories from vol.4 to fill out the remainder and the final epilogue would feature a preview of contents from vol.5, with brief introduction of new character, Tatenashi, and not bother with any special ending.

That way they could go ahead with season 2 (provided that the DVD/BD sales allows it) and continue with vol.5 without much trouble.

Aside from those you have listed, the actual names for countries are not specified in LN.

And the situation about Isreal is kinda vague.

Italy - mentioned by video game (Tempest serise IS) - Plausible since the game data is based on actual 2nd Mondo Grosso Tournament.
Isreal - Aside from Siverior Gospel being US/Isreal joint development, no mentioning of purely domestic IS.

However, it talks about a video game called Infinite Stratos - Vast Sky - a sort of video game of fighting game genre, based on Mondo Grosso
(according to LN contents, this game is internationally popular selling over a million copies within a month of release)

It is specified that the game data is based on 2nd Mondo Grosso (That's about when Ichika was kidnnaped, so that's quite a while ago) and there are 21 participants, from 21 nations.
It doesn't say anything about the name of countries other than England and Italia, though.
