It wouldn't be that bad if it had some light romance in it for shippers cutesy sake, but if it invovles full-blown soap opera melodrama, then it will absolutely destroy a series like Tari Tari. Soap opera drama worked excellently in True Tears since romance/drama was the core theme and also worked well in Hanasaku Iroha as the Kou/Ohana dynamic was a signficant part of the series (albeit people are mixed on whether it was done well or not), but Tari Tari is substantially different from those two. It has a different vibe and purpose - Tari Tari in a nutshell is a "feel good" type of series, that happens to be very well executed despite its unremarkable premise. A superior version of last season's Natsuiro Kiseki if you wanna call it.

Same reason why I'm enjoying the current festival arc in Hyouka immensely. That's arguably even more unremarkable in premise but somehow Kyoani made it very entertaining due to how much detail and finesse they put into it. And this is is coming from a person who cool story bro'd K-on, Nichijou and even somewhat the Dissappearance movie (yes, I'm one of the few who thought it was merely "okay". I still like Haruhi S1 though). I don't consider Hyouka a mystery at all (at least not a hard mystery). In fact, I think Tari Tari has more common with Hyouka than with True Tears or Hanasaku Iroha in the way they take the simple and mundane and turn into something entertaining and very pleasant to watch, without making it "derp" - i.e. exaggerated moe to the point of "moeblob". Episode 4:
The part with the young Konatsu dancing. That part was so cute! Also loved the way Sawa dealt with Konatsu's disturbance at night. A stuffed dog against the face makes everything ok again That was quite the talking Sawa gave to Konatsu, but of course, she was right and it had to be said.

I'm not going to say this show is losing its way, but the relationships do seem to be lacking something, either in finesse or intensity. Things have to keep moving or I will lose the impulse to identify with the characters (except for Sawa, lol). Maybe it's just that the group's musical opportunities seem a bit haphazard, so the drive of the show is being dissipated.
I'm not necessarily looking for romance, although I do believe that the show's direction is not set in stone at this point. Romance is still possible, in various directions, although the hints so far have been pretty light. But in any case the characters' emotions and relationships seem to me to lack focus. Especially when I compare this show to Kokoro Connect. I want to care about Konatsu's music, but her reactions in this episode didn't help. The way her emotional reaction to the Condor Queens was portrayed was not strong enough to explain, for me, her abandoning the chance to sing. So the basic emotional trajectory of the episode didn't touch me. I understand why she might have had that reaction, but I didn't feel it. And Wakana seems to take a step forward...and then just settle back into immobility again. I'd like to see a bit more movement, even if it isn't progress. Or maybe I'd just like to see more of her so I can intuit her feelings and thoughts more clearly. I'm also feeling that Seto Asami is taking Konatsu a bit too close to Chihaya right now. Fortunately, Konatsu is still a much lighter character, so there is still usually a different feeling. The pieces are being moved on the chessboard, but I'm not getting the emotional hit I want from them. Nevertheless, this show is operating at a higher level than most others, and I'm still enjoying it a lot. But it's slipping behind Hyouka and Kokoro Connect, for me. EDIT: Has anyone yet pointed out that the end credits say the big foreigner is played by ホルヘ デイアス (Horuhe Diasu) -- which looks to me like a transliteration of "Jorge Diaz." So perhaps this is an actual Spanish-speaking actor, from whichever continent (likely Spain itself). I may just have missed this in the discussion.

Wein continues to steal the show for me with his antics, but I can't help but feel there's going to be a rough culmination soon on his character. He's still completely out of place in every respect and acts like a do-anything superhero. Just following his character, he's never turned down anything and tries his best at whatever he's given but the cast seems to... still be ignoring him. Every character has been presented a conflict, so to speak, right now except Wein. If you notice:
That said, this episode seems to be setting the stage for: Sawa and Taichi drama soon, possibly romance (but... PA works, your PVs are evil, and this feels like a red herring). Wein and Wakana is a bit of a toss up... Another good episode. Quote:
Just look at mashifony. That was a feel good series at the start until the gears ramped up around the midway point... still was an impeccably good story though.

Also, I forgot, they really underscored the social outcast sort of feel with Wein when they had him trying to befriend animals at lunch rather than the abundance of people in his school.

I wonder what Wien's chibi flashback will be? Him being in Vianna and introducing us to the person he wrote a letter to in episode 1. Just so many possibilities, hope he gets one, this guy is just plain awesome!

Wein was very entertaining. Keep it up guy! Next chibi should be about him. The band was ok, fitting the "beach" setup pretty well. Let's hope to see more Sakai next ep too. And as always, Sawa was gorgeous. |
