Re: Fruits Basket

Digital animation was in its infancy, so most studios' work looked cheap when compared to modern productions. New techniques, software, and equipment allow studios to attain higher quality without demanding a correspondingly large increase in budget (generally, budgets have decreased a bit in recent years, but technical improvements have helped compensate).

So what are the odds that DEEN will mess up Rozen Maiden?

http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news...in-studio-deen

I will say that the staff they got on it is quite good so at least the story probably won't suffer. I just wonder if it'll get derailed by terrible animation or terrible art. Hopefully DEEN isn't thinking of using a rotoscope, LOL.

(And yes, I've heard Sankarea was quite good by DEEN standards)

Not just by "deen standards",it was quite good period.

Also was the best looking TV show Deen has done in a long while.

The director is a former Shaft employee so I expect the influence to show up again like it did in Sankarea

That being said, considering the staff on hand I could see the anime being a bit of a liberal adaptation and I can already see manga fans complaining.

Studio Deen at his peak, still the best thing they have ever done. It's also one of my favourites scenes, everything about it is perfection(storyboard, layout, music, animation).

Omata da gawd Mamoru Hatakeyama is easily the best breakout director of recent times, snatching him up after he left SHAFT was was a masterstroke by whoever was responsible for it @ DEEN. If people thought Sankarea was a fluke (it did drop off, but there was only so much you can do with the source material) than Rozen Maiden proves he is a star on the rise. SHAFT's loss is DEEN's gain.... a Mamoru Hatakeyama series now equals must watch for me.

And than getting Mochizuki Tomomi to direct next season's 'pupa', really smart pick ups by DEEN. Tomomi's currently doing series composition for Rozen Maiden as well, I guess Omata will do storyboards for an episode or two for pupa next season.

The rozen maiden ED pretty much shows why I love Omata:

YouTube
Sorry; dynamic content not loaded. Reload?

I never skip this,it hypnotizes me everytime I watch it,sure the song sets the tone but I love the lighting and how long he holds the shots.

In addition to Pupa they've got another Shaft veteran directing Sakura Trick this winter,I'm curious about that one as well.

I heartily agree, Hatakeyama is clearly a budding superstar director, even if he can't choose a name and stick with it. His direction for Sankarea was fabulously stylish and the best part of a good show, and he and the great Mochizuki Tomomi have been a dream team with Rozen Maiden.

^ So that’s why Rozen Maiden Zuruckspulen is so well-executed (except for the mandatory recap-episode 1) and has great OP & ED which are both easy for the ears and visually stunning. I’ve never watched Sankarea anime (I only read the manga) since I heard it has anime-original ending that sucks. Maybe I’ll check it out someday .

Sankarea's ending wasn't that bad, IMO. They just tried to add a bit of foreshadowing in it while deviating from the source, yet still remain quite faithful to the overall story. The 13th episode is technically the real ending, though, but they left in more questions than answers, probably aiming for a second season to get greenlit (I would certainly welcome it).

Anyway, Rozen Maiden Zurückspülen looks fantastic and am highly enjoying it so far. And with what's in the horizon in terms of future projects, I hope the studio can shake off a bit of the nasty reputation it has received over the years.

Let's not forget Hakkenden, which was very underrated in its first season, and the second is even better. Despite the almost total lack of attention it gets in the West it's a very solid show, and quite nice visually as well.

It actually features another interesting recruit for Deen : Yamazaki Mitsue, she's a brain's base veteran (though she's worked for other studios as well) who was assistant director on Kure Nai and Mawaru Penguindrum

What's up with that btw?

Always wondered how come it was so quickly known that Hatakeyama=Omata, was it part of a press release?

His storyboarding ability is elite. He's done the storyboard for the OP, ED and the first 6 episodes of Rozen Maiden, already more than he did for Sankarea.

The first 3 episodes of Sankarea are quality and a massive improvement on the source material. If anything it's the source material that brings Sankarea down after that, as opposed to any sort of deviation.

Well if they keep giving shows to people with talent like Omata, Yamazaki Mitsue and Mochizuki Tomomi they'll be on the track to changing that tainted perception they have. Interesting to see they go after some SHAFT people though, I guess some people want to stand on their own feet and not have any credit taken. (Because no matter how much they do, Shinbo will always be credited by most fans, since as well as creating the general SHAFT style he's Series Director or Chief Director or whatever title he gives to himself for overseeing things)

Hasn't he only used his real name from Sankarea onward? Pretty much Omata was his alias @ SHAFT and since he left them I assume he's using his real name now?

So Shinbou is so egotistical that he makes every other director work under an alias with "Shin" in it? Well, Oonuma Shin still hasn't changed his name back yet...

If only it were that simple

Take Hakkenden, he storyboarded ep 6 of S1 under the name Hatakeyama and ep 3 of S2 under the name Omata.
So even within the same show he uses different names.

So he hasn't "retired" the Omata name,he also hasn't fully left shaft (storyboarded a Hidamari Sketch episode as Omata last fall) and works for other studios (he's worked on a Phi Brain episode and a Da Capo III episode for example).

Also what the hell was he up to between producing hentais (around 99-01) and surfing up at shaft in 09?That's an 8 year gap with absolutely no credits.Unless that's just another person with the same name.
