Find out where you fit in the fansubbing political spectrum (a handy quiz)
Take this simple quiz, and then open the spoiler tags below to see where YOU fit in the fansubbing political spectrum! Like a myers briggs test, except cooler.
Answer yes or no to whether each statement applies to you: 1. I often download dvd-rips of R1 dvds. 2. I have never downloaded anime using IRC. 3. When a show is licensed right before it is finished, I do not download fansubs of it anymore. 4. When a show is prelicensed, I do not download fansubs of it. 5. I prefer to wait for the best quality fansub group to release than to just take the first available. 6. I archive fansubs to CD/DVD, and keep them indefinitely. 7. If a series is licensed, I'll delete/destroy any copies of fansubs I have of it. 8. I often download hollywood movie dvd rips. 9. When media factory requested the removal of all its shows from animesuki, I was angry at the japanese company. 10. I will download the first release of a show, no matter which group it is. 11. I will make sure that if more than one group completes a series, that I have all of a single groups' releases. 12. Fansubbing licensed anime is wrong and should not happen, no matter what. 13. DVD ripping is wrong and should not be done. 14. The most important part of anime fansubbing is the community of fans. 15. The most important part of anime fansubbing is the anime itself. 16. The explosion of popularity of anime in the past few years is bad for the community. 17. Anime shows are not as good as they used to be. 18. I would prefer a show be licensed by 4kids than remain unlicensed. 19. Big fansub groups with lots and lots of projects are better than small, one show groups. 20. Ungreatful leechers are not a big problem with fansubbing today. 21. If Naruto had not been fansubbed, it would have done much more poorly on Cartoon Network. 22. Anime licensing companies charge too much for DVDs. Spoiler for DO NOT READ UNTIL AFTER ANSWERING THE ABOVE QUESTIONS:

At the risk of making myself look foolish (cause who knows what's in that spoiler) I'll answer your plethora of questions that probably spawned from the same boredem I'm feeling in answering it...
1)Yep 2)The statement doesn't sound right...I could either say "Yes I never" or "No I do" 3)Hate to be anal here but you need better "Yes-No" statements.... 4)No I do 5)Sometimes i do Sometimes I don't 6)Yes (Finally a good yes-No statement)... 7)No I won't 8)Yes 9)Nope 10)Yeah, sometimes 11)Nope ( I mix and match sometimes) 12)No it's not 13)No it prolly shouldn't be done 14)Yes 15)yes somewhat 16)Never 17) Yes they are...you just have to search harder 18)Hell No 19)No they are not..Shinsen for example..God i wish they would do 1 good show instead of 100 whatever type shows... 20)Nope i don't think so 21)Nope that's not true 22)Unfortiunatley Yes they do...but I still buy some... I suck at this..sorry, but it's confusing when you can answer both Yes or no, but mean the same thing...Anyways i'll just figure out what categorey i belong in... edit: Still can't figure out what i am..but I guess i'm kinda progressive and kinda Rage against the machine-ish, but also very practical...that didn't go to well..maybe somebody will do this better than me...

And by my calculations you are a +6 L-R, +4 P-C, which, from what I know of your posts on these forums, seems about right .

2. I have never downloaded anime using IRC.
How can you say "Yes" i agree with that or "no" i disagree?? Ya see what i mean? It forces you to use double-negatives *(sorry i'm a journalism major^^) What you should have put is: I dl anime using IRC then i would simply say "yes"... many of them are like that... but maybe I'm insane, so please ignore me if you think I am...

I.e.: "I have never downloaded anime from IRC." <- Yes, this statement applies to me (it is true) or "I have never downloaded anime from IRC" <- No, this statement does not apply to me (it is false) do you see now?

Yes, but still^^...double-negatives aren't the way to go...You should always give a positive statment and ask simply yes or no does this apply..you should never use "I do not do something" or I have never done something..." You should just say what it is postively... Sorry this is a little pet-peave of mine...
I like to walk to school <Y or N?> I never like to walk to school <Yes i never or No i do> <Yes i do or No i never> which is a double negative... Anyways i hope that means something good that ranking...I don't understand it, but hope it's good...and please forgive me if you think i going overboard with all this...

And there's no Good or Bad to the results. I'm not passing judgment on anyone's opinions here. Perhaps in the spirit of full disclosure I should state that I am, personally, a +2 L-R, -1 P-C, which means I am little bit liberal and slightly conservative.

+2 L-R, +3 P-C According to my explanation, you're a little liberal in terms of fansub legality, and mildly progessive in your views of how fansubbing should be done. You probably like bitorrent, and don't really care who fansubs a show as long as they release at a decent pace.

Anyways if nobody else says anything it doesn't matter to me...The bottomline is I do leech, but at the same time I understand why anime corporations are fair in their disgruntled attitude (that most have) about leeching...However without leeching and the efforts of fansubbers most under the radar titles would never get exposure and that results in the anime companies making money from basically free-hype..so I'm pretty even-sided...Hope that's reflected in my ranking...

From what I've learned so far about item response theory, one of the core tenets is to avoid the use of negatives (not, don't, aren't, etc.). It's right up there with avoid double-barreled questions.
Enough people will misinterpret these questions to invalidate the results. When you're trying to make statements about populations, that is. Sweet, I'm actually learning something this semester!

Let's see... so that's a yes for questions:
3,4,5,6,11,12,13,15, so that gives me: L-R = 1-6 = -5 P-C = 1-2 = -1 Interesting... and pretty much fits the bill. Would someone care to actually make a 2D diagram where someone can plot their (L-R,P-C) coordinate into one of several stereotype regions? EDIT: It would be really funny to incorporate this into the RPG. It can work akin to the Lawful<->Chaotic, Good<->Evil system in D&D. So instead of that you have Conservative<->Progressive, Right<->Left ;o Last edited by zalas; 2006-02-15 at 04:16. |

Now that's a scary outcome... and not because I disagree with it. ^^:
-8 L-R and -4 P-C "...you believe fansubs are only a temporary substitute for a proper DVD release, and are a privilage, not a right, that are allowed us by the japanese companies."Fun fun. |

Fun indeed. Though I wish you'd have made it more explicit that you're supposed to subtract the numbers... then again, maybe I"m just the only silly fool around here :P
I got 4 for L-R and -2 for P-C. I agree with the L-R all right - I do a lot of 'bad things' but I wouldn't go as far as flaming MFI - but I'm not one of those elitists who think that anime should be kept into a small circle... though I shall admit that I don't like it when anime is this popular... I got absolutely 0 for R. I agree with that analysis.

-2 L-R
+1 P-C The top number should be far far more negative for me. Centerist sounds about right for the second number. Edit: Also, the small problem is that a couple of these questions are not really binary. 11. I will make sure that if more than one group completes a series, that I have all of a single groups' releases. This one has a really really bad hypothesis statement. I could name a number of situations. 1) Group A does 1-15, Group C does 16-26, Group B which is better does 17-26. I would grab group B for ep 17+ in this case. :. No. 2) Group A does 1-26, Group B of (?) quality does 1-26. then Yes. This is probably missing "From beginning to end". 12. Fansubbing licensed anime is wrong and should not happen, no matter what. < I'll bet most people will answer No to this one because of 4kids/Nelvana. Last edited by bayoab; 2006-02-15 at 07:08. |
