-The first episode of Tsukihi Phoenix in the book was chapter 3. Chapter 1 being a preface, chapter 2 starts with Karen asking her brother if he knew the sure-fire way to win at RPS, while doing a handstand. The chapter ends with Karen carrying Araragi on her shoulders, with Araragi noting her pace was picking up, which was natural considered where they were going. In chapter 3 Araragi explains why he and Karen were on such good terms with each other, as well as their destination unmentioned in the previous chapter.
-The date is August 14, it's the middle of Summer Break during Obon. Obon is when people go back visiting their grandparents and other relatives. Kanbaru was living with her grandparents and Hanekawa didn't have grandparents to go back to, so they didn't leave the city.
-Karen was thinking of stripping naked to teach him the technique. For Araragi the handstand was more embarassing though. He wished she quitted either doing a handstand or being his sister. He even tried to kick her in the head, although she was able to dodge it.
-Karen said a sure-fire technique for winning RPS could be useful to decide who pulls the trigger first at Russian roulette. In fact, it seems she actually played Russian roulette. With Italian mafia. And she is Japanese. Karen didn't use the sure-fire technique that time because it would be cowardly, though.
-Araragi thought the sure-fire technique involved using dynamic vision to change your pick according to opponent's move, but Karen replied that something like that can't be called a sure-fire technique, because you can't use it if the opponent poked your eyes.
-Araragi was worried that Karen was becoming more and more stupid, although it seems that was just Karen in high spirits because she was going to meet Kanbaru.
-Karen kept talking about that technique and Araragi thought that the whole talk about it was something like a necessary conversation in videogames, where on a YES/NO choice they keep asking you the same question until you choose YES.
-Seeing Karen cutting her hair was the thing that surprised the most Araragi in his whole life. Not even when he becae a vampire he was that surprised. By the way, Karen used the key like a saw in the novel. Araragi tried to tell her that hair is a woman's life. Karen replied that those words sounded good, but you can't live just with good words. She lives by throwing her life in the drain, because her master told her even in a drain there are shining jewels. Araragi starts thinking it would be better to talk with the master of the dojo she attends to. He suspected the real name of the dojo was Shocker (from Kamen Rider).
-Only when Karen realized Tsukihi could say something about her cutting her hair she started looking worried. Araragi insisted not making it look like it was his fault.
-Araragi insisted that Karen changed clothes, so she put on her best suit, a cycling suit. Not even Araragi knew why she had one even if she had no bike.
-Karen has a conversation with Araragi about why ambulance and fire-engine have the same phone number, 119. Karen is puzzled because an ambulance could come when you need a fire-engine, and vice versa. She says sharing the phone number with the police (110) would have been better, as the police could arrest the criminal involved, or at least arrest people who complain police has come instead of the other car. It seems that when the phone number was decided the phones had dials. Araragi even presents a numeric trick from Hanekawa: think of 3 numbers, write it down two times, then that 6 digits number can be divided by 7 (without a remainder). Karen tries it but cannot divide correctly.
-Araragi says Kagenui speaks in Kyoto dialect, and compared to Tsukihi (first episode) she sounds more like a native speaker. Kagenui had a stripe shirt in the novel. Araragi says she looked neat like a grade school teacher and there wasn't anything strange about her except the fact she was standing over a mailbox. Araragi says that it feels like the gag part is over. In fact, continuing frolicking for over 100 pages one would be fed up.
-From the way Kagenui introduced herself, Araragi wonders if she is a performer or a politician.
-When Karen introduces herself to Kagenui, she even says for some people she is known as the Fire Sisters.
-Hanekawa didn't intend to go to university, so studying was unnecessary for her, but she still studied nonetheless. Araragi was imagining Hanekawa lightly dressed because of the heat, or maybe she just had a shower and her hair was still wet. Hanekawa promptly asked if he was imagining something evil. She also felt like Araragi was outside, so she asked him even if he has really been studying. Hanekawa also said she felt like Araragi was speaking from a place 1 meter higher than usual, so she asked if Araragi was bullying someone like Karen by riding on her shoulders. In fact, she cannot help but feel like Araragi had fun pressing his nether region on Karen's head. Anyway, Araragi boasted with Kagenui that Hanekawa knew all cram schools of Japan, but he was just joking. She actually knew the answer, so Araragi brought out the usual exchange with Hanekawa. In fact, Araragi knew Hanekawa had realized he often did it on purpose and she was just humoring him. Then Hanekawa asked him if he was having a bad thought again. Hanekawa was thinking of giving up in rehabilitating him. She mentioned that even Senjougahara has already been rehabilitated. Then she says that was all for the moment, she will continue her sermon another time. Araragi was worried because he got her mad, but on the other hand he was pleased to be scolded. That was the sign he and Karen are sibling, he is M too.
-In the end Araragi for Hanekawa became a guy who was having fantasies on a classmate while having fun pressing his nether reagion on his sister while going to visit a female junior.
-Kagenui says she arrived here walking from her home town. For her unless it's 100km is not far.
-Araragi thinks Kagenui is playing a child game where people pretend the ground is a sea infested by sharks.
-There is a part at the start of the 5th chapter where Araragi talks about Senjougahara. Since this might reappear in the another episode, I will skip this part for now.
-Kanbaru tried to invite Karen inside her house, but Araragi stopped her with a dropkick in the back to preserve Kanbaru's good reputation. It was a love dropkick. Karen, enraged, hit him with a knee before he landed. He feared Karen would continue the attack, but Kanbaru stopped Karen with a sermon: "What are you doing to Araragi-senpai?". Three-way deadlock.
-Kiki and Lala are the two characters of Little Twin Stars, by Sanrio, the same company of Hello Kitty. Sanrio specializes in the creation of cute characters.
-After saying he was bad at ad-libbing, Hachikuji started walking away. Araragi complained that lately the conversations with Hachikuji were too demanding. He didn't know what character she wanted him to become. Anyway, Hachikuji was just a gradeschooler so he caught up with her immediately. He even offered to let her ride on his shoulders, but she refused saying only Araragi would gain enjoyment from it. Hachikuji also told Araragi to mind his words, as he was behaving like a criminal with her. Araragi acknowledged his affection was at a criminal level, he was often told that in public. He said a love too strong can ruin a country, but if he is any different from past rulers, is that he won't blame the courtesan for it. He is the male courtesan. Hachikuji laughed at him, and he was happy of that.
-Hachikuji calls him Kyarabuki (food stuff), Araragi replied she did it on purpose, Hachikuji "I'm sorry, I smiled*. Eheh", Araragi: "You skipped a piece". *(CR translation. The verb used means "to get shy")
-Hanekawa changed her hairstyle but she was still not showing Araragi her plain clothes.
-Hachikuji says that with all changes in hairstyle and fashion it will be hard to make it into an anime because it's demanding on the staff. Hachikuji wanted people to work hard on her transformation scene. Araragi replied there was no such scene, as she wasn't a magical girl to begin with. Araragi also commented that in anime everyone has always the same hairstyle, possibly also because when a character changes the hairstyle people won't recognize them anymore (there are even people for whom Gundam designs are all the same after all). He said that Senjougahara woudl be the worst, she cut her hair recently but she had several ways to do up her hair. Araragi also wasn't sure it would be safe to show on TV first period Senjougahara, although he felt she was necessary for the story. Hachikuji then proposed to become the heroine in the anime version, and to simply forget about that certain heroin in name only. Hachikuji was also proposing wearing camisoles or bra tops. Araragi warned her that it would be better if he didn't see her with such suggestive attires in front of him. Hachikuji says that if needed she will even undress. Araragi replied Hachikuji was the one who wouldn't be safe to show on television.
-Hachikuji comes out with the gag "You too, Brutus, have tiny breasts?". Araragi replies it would be better if she stopped with dirty jokes, and anyway he likes big breasts.
-Even Kanbaru, Sengoku and Oshino would have problems for the TV code. Especially Sengoku for the gravure scenes at the temple. Araragi complained there are no normal characters in this story. Even Hanekawa would have problems because of her dark past. Hachikuji also mentions she recently saw Araragi's design in the anime, they made him look cool. She says hair covering an eye makes him look nihilistic. He reflected that indeed in the beginning he was supposed to be nihilistic and sarcastic, although by now no traces remain in him of that character. Hachikuji says that it seems his nickname is Kitarou (where ki = demon), and that his tiger striped jacket vest suits him (a joke with Gegege no Kitaro). Hachikuji says that now he has to become faithful to the anime design. Araragi asks about his height, and Hachikuji replies it was faithful to the original work, much to the chagrin of Araragi who now plans to always ride on Karen's shoulders. Hachikuji says that she has deep ties with Araragi so she tried to make his height crossing 2 meters in the anime, but to no avail. Araragi is more impressed with her authority over the anime, as if she was the producer: Hachikuji P. Hachikuji says the real thing she was interested in was the dance in the ending, she was thinking of choosing break dance.
-Araragi says that despite before she was implying so, Hachikuji not only was not disappearing, but she was also meeting Araragi more often. Hachikuji replies that she tried to create some foreshadowing, but actually she doesn't know what she should do. She tried to talk about it with the staff, but it seems you can't stretch the original work just because it received an anime adaptation, the anime and the original work are two different things. At this point Hachikuji P invested too much into it, so there is no choice but to make the sequel come out with another company, because the original work has become pathetic. Araragi protested it has not. Hachikuji says it's on the level of ###Bunko. Araragi tell her to not censor the name, he doesn't feel guilty for anything. Hachikuji repeats it's on the level of Fujimi Fantasia Bunko. Araragi begs her to censor the name.
-"Karabuki" is "polishing with a dry cloth".
-Hachikuji mentions a urban legend about Rolls Royce. There was a Rolls Royce which stopped moving in the middle of the desert. The driver called the manifacturer to repair the car. Immediately came a plane that delivered a new Rolls Royce of the same model. The driver could get home, but he was uneasy because he didn't receive the repair bill, so he phoned the manifacturer again. The manifacturer however said he knew not of such thing. The driver started saying that recently the car broke down in the desert and was then interrupted. "Dear client, Rolls Royces don't break down."
-Hachikuji calls Araragi Doaraki-san (from the mascot of the baseball team Dragons). Araragi replies his name is Araragi (yadda yadda). Hachikuji: "I didn't stutter. Your name is Doaraki-san!". A new pattern, now she was asserting it. Hachikuji says that Araragi was the only one who thought he was called Araragi, he just couldn't read the atmosphere.
-Hachikuji proposes a quiz from Die Hard 3. "A lone wolf enters a forest. How far can he go?". It's actually from the novelization of the movie. Araragi couldn't answer. The solution is "Until the middle of the forest" (because past that point the wolf would be getting out of the forest).
-Araragi asked what was the purpose of talking about these things, and Hachikuji says it could be foreshadowing. Or not. If one is always creating foreshadowing then the development will be discovered. She asks Araragi to say something funny, but Araragi has nothing to say, since he has even talked about math (his favorite subject) before. Hachikuji remarks that since he became popular because of the anime, now he had graduated from anarchic useless chat. In other words he has sold his soul to the majors.
-At this point, since chats and quizzes aren't good anymore, Hachikuji becomes serious and says "Araragi-san. Today I came to say goodbye" "I... didn't hate you that much" "I should have gone back to my city for a long time, but I was worried about you, so time passed... However now you are fine on your own. I can leave you" "Live happily with Senjougahara. Don't ask the unreasonable to Hanekawa. And sometimes please remember me. Don't forget there once was a girl called Hachikuji Mayoi who was your friend". Araragi burst crying. He offered Hachikuji to live inside his shadow together with Shinobu. Hachikuji declined saying that she would be too nervous if alone with Shinobu. At this point, while talking so much it seemed like they were using 1000 sheets of paper, they met Ononoki.
-Araragi was surprised that bokukko really existed. He thought they were only an anime thing. He also liked Ononoki's color tights and mules. Hachikuji pointed out that if he became so agitated in front of a girl, he couldn't be trusted anymore when saying she (Hachikuji) was not a loli.
-Araragi didn't know why Ononoki called him "devil boy". Unlike with Kagenui, this time he wasn't riding his sister. Maybe she saw him before when he was trying to perform his usual sexual harassment to Hachikuji? A note: Kagenui properly calls him "Brute boy". The first kanji of "brute" is "devil". Also, it was clear in the anime, but better repeat that vampire is "blood sucking demon" in Japanese.
-Araragi notes that the names (first names) Yodzuru and Yotsugi are similar (the first kanji is the same. Also, in normal Japanese those kanji would mean "cosine" and "cotangent").
-Araragi felt like Ononoki knew emotions somehow but not the way to properly express them. Her being expressionless reminded him of the old Senjougahara.
