The problem I have isn't the chapter itself, but the timing of it. After all the back-and-forth we went through, this looks like just another set up to ruin the upcoming confession, which is my biggest fear. I blame it on Seo-syndrome, but I'm always expecting the worst to happen now. Either Utsumi doesn't make it on time as he's searching for the item and she's gone or Tooru somehow appears to Yuki on the roof and ruins the whole thing. Neither of those scenarios do I find appealing.

tbh everything goes as expected ... in shounen romance if a character plans something ahead in detail it means it has to go wrong, pretty much a natural law in the genre.
Point is these kind of stories haven't really changed in the last 10-20 years, they've always been usually angst and drama driven. The level of "loldrama" really is not some kind of contemporary trend, it's what readers have been expecting to read for many years. The author's task is to maintain a balance between drama and breather. A nervewrecking pace with barely a full chapter without heavy drama like the beginning of GE can be as frustrating as a sudden leap from mediocre drama to high drama due to consecutive incidents as seen in other series.
