I feel a bit bad that I didn't watch Nozaki-kun as it aired, but it was definitely a treat to watch. As for Twintails, it wasn't really categorized as comedy, but the absurdity of the series, and how it embraced it fully was enough for me to consider it for this category above other shows.

Now I did consider putting Mushishi into this category, but I figured that is unfair as it would definitely just shove out the competition for me one sidedly. As it is in other spots.

Yama no Susume 2nd season has done an outstanding job IMO in show casing the everyday life of Yukimura Aoi and her friends, along with being a good coming of age story. For me it does measure up for the more top tier SoL shows that have aired over the years. Very relaxing & heartwarming series. I have/had to personally thank a good friend for bringing the series to my attention as I did not watch the s1 shorts when it aired sometime in 2013. Thankfully, s2 was only about 1/3 of the way through airing when i caught up. Was very glad to enjoy this on a weekly basis.

Ahhh, GochUsagi, another very relaxing SoL series, not in the same nature/manner of Yama no Susume, but still a good series to watch to unwind you on a weekly basis. The european inspired setting also added on a bit to the everyday life of the cast.

Super Sonico The Animation was actually also a rather nice SoL earlier in the year. Not as ecchi fanservice expected as others had thought it would be. Which was a nice surprise, it was a very mellow SoL show overall IMO. It did well in showing off Sonico and who she was along with her life as intended.

Gin no Saji is definitely a top contender here for me (may change before nomination phase is over), excellent SoL & coming of age story. It is nice to observe Hachiken's development and him going through his new everyday life at the agriculture school compared to more normal city schools...

I'll hopefully add more thoughts onto this at a sooner, than later date before the voting begins. 2014 was a rather relaxing year for me in terms of shows when I quickly think back on it now.

Will need to re-evaluate some of my choices for nominations for a couple of categories I feel.

Spoiler for Reasoning for #1 Spot: Heavy spoilers for Rebellion Plot:

The choice for top spot here was easy. Usually it's hard for a movie to beat out a TV series that has more time to flesh out characters. I guess Rebellion had the advantage of building off of the Madoka series, but still it was amazing. I didn't like it. I didn't want to see Homura fall like that, but I cannot deny that it was an incredibly well plotted storyline. I left the movie theater feeling pity for Satan. Anyone that can tell a "Paradise Lost" story like that deserves top spot for best storyline.

The others could probably be switched out. I picked Soul Eater NOT! because it did a great job of telling a new story in an existing world that fit perfectly with all the old stuff, and even tied up a few back story mysteries, but at the same time had a completely different feel to it. Spin off successes like that are rare.

Tokyo ESP actually had a terrific story, that was sadly obscured by the decision to start the story at the climax and then flashback.

Usually I fell it is unfair to compare movie animation to TV animation, but Rebellion took the quality of animation well above my expectations even for a movie. That Mami - Homura fight scene was gorgeous! The whole theater was in shock after the spectacle.

The others again could be switched out. I decided that Tokyo ESP has some good fight scenes, and I like how the managed some of the strange powers people had. Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun just had spot on terrific reaction shots. An element of quality animation that often gets overlooked.

Rebellion is obvious why I picked it. Inari was a sleeper that I think a lot of people missed, but I really enjoyed the way they explored the magic Inari had, and how it effected people. Soredemo just had an enjoyable premise and a terrific first several episodes. I'll also give a nod to Amagi Brilliant Park, the premise of a theme park as a refuge for actual magical fairies was an interesting premise.

Again, nothing can beat the drama of Rebellion. I really wanted to vote for Soul Eater NOT! in here, but I already voted for it in two other categories. Same for Soredemo Sekai wa Utsukushii, and same for my alt vote for Inari, Konkon, Koi Iroha, it also has already been voted for, so I guess I'll drop down to the sixth place and vote for Ao Haru Ride.

Didn't really watch much romance this year. I should've liked Golden Time, but I just couldn't get into it for some reason. Soredemo started out with a strong and interesting romance, and the other two just kind round out the category.

Wow! What a year for comedy! These three stood out for me, and it was really hard to decide between Seki-kun and Nozaki-kun for first place. I could easily switch them, but I decided that Tonari no Seki-kun was something special in the comedy category, considering that it was so short.

Also a strong selection for Slice of Life. Soul Eater NOT! is the stand out here, it had such a good slice of life feel in a fantastical world, and then added action and drama on top without ever losing that slice of life element. Nozaki-kun of course got most of it's comedy from Slice of life, as did Seki-kun as well.

I didn't see any Sports series this year, despite people saying it was a strong year for them. I'm interested in what nominees there are for this category.

I was actually quite surprised by my picks for this year's best TV shows. The comedy was just so strong that it's better then the drama. After thinking about it I gave the edge to Nozaki-kun over Seki-kun here, as it just had more depth to it. Soul Eater NOT! was just so perfect in it's mixture of action, drama, and fluffy slice of life that I decided to give it the third spot. The other competitor was actually Amagi Brilliant Park, as while there were other TV series I liked better, they all have some significant flaws. Brilliant Park was just well put together, and didn't have the flaws that the other shows did.

Ugh... this was a really hard choice to make. So many strong females this year. Well Yokoi Rumi clearly got the top spot. Tonari no Seki-kun was essentially a two person show: Yokoi and Seki-kun. Yokoi's character made that show.

I really want to identify Nike as a terrific female lead this year. She was probably the best thing in the show. Rinka was also a great protagonist for Tokyo ESP, I really wish they hadn't shuffled the plot around in a way that didn't display her character development as well as a traditional telling would have.

Chiyo was awesome in Nozaki-kun, and Tsugumi was a great protagonist in Soul Eater. I really want to vote for all of them.

Here I felt the competition was much weaker. All three of the males I picked in this were overshadowed by their female co-star - although they all had good chemistry with the leading ladies, and help show them off, which is important. Felt like I was picking the best picture frames (male lead) for the pictures (female lead) though.

What can be said here? Homura, why Homura, why did you do it? Even Dio can't quite match that. As for The Professor from Tokyo ESP, just imagine if Professor X from the X-Men was the villain? Scary huh? And Azuma Minami from Tokyo ESP was a terrific evil counterpart to Rinka.

Shaula Gorgon / Soul Eater NOT! for comparing favorably with the other Gorgons from the main series, and actually killing people in a fluffy slice of life show.

This, this was why Nozaki-kun took best show. Those side characters were amazing. Even excluding the two here and moving down to my third and fourth picks of the show were of a level sufficient to normally win best side character. Hori? Kashima? Comedy gold! They could anchor their own show. Gotou's shipper on deck antics though allow her to slip in ahead of them. Normally she'd probably win the whole category, but no one, and I mean no one, can out do the Lorelei of the Choir Club (Seo). Not even Mikorin.

I want to give the top place to Mahou Shoujo Madoka★Magica Rebellion, but I guess I better allow someone else to win. Maybe I'll weaken and come back later to switch it. Soul Eater NOT! did a terrific job of world building in a world we already knew, but didn't know much about those parts of it. Seki-kun was essentially the world of a young boy's imagination. I liked how one critic compared it to Calvin & Hobbes. Tokyo ESP built a great world of special powers and the fear and anger it could cause. Think X-men, but in Japan with Japanese emphasis on fitting into the group.

I always figure that if there are credits you never skip, then they must be top quality. Inari, Konkon, Koi Iroha just had gorgeous credits. I know the animation in the Opening is better (so beautiful the way they depict the sunlight), but I just love the Ending song. I could listen to that one over and over. Never skipped either, and often replayed the ending.

Nozaki-kun had just the right opening to put you in the mood for whatever antic our cast had gotten up to this week, and I never skipped the opening.

Honorable mention to both the Tonari no Seki-kun Opening, and Ending, both of which I did not skip. The opening was interesting in how it matched the show. The ending was an interesting medley of improvised instruments.

Luminous from the Madoka Movies was also great.

The Ending to Nozaki-kun was also pretty good, but I skipped it occasionally.

Tough year for me overall. Every season I'd look at the array of largely moe and high-school offerings and wonder if I still should be paying attention to anime. Then, every so often, a show like Kill la Kill comes along to hold my interest.

I decided to nominate it as a science-fiction show for lack of a better category.

I thought Satsuki was a better-developed character than Ryoko, and either of them can be considered the female lead. Other than her deluded obsession with Nozaki-kun, Sakura is a bright, perceptive young lady and a stronger character than she first appears.

Paku Romi was born to play Ragyo, though her turns in Claymore and Higepiyo give this role some competition.

-{D4}- [Best Side-Character] Senketsu / Kill la Kill, Gamagoori Ira / Kill la Kill, Rita / Shingeki no Bahamut: Genesis

Senketsu follows in the fine tradition set by Chamber in Suisei no Gargantia of non-human characters that are often more human than the real ones around them. Gamagoori is an hilarious blowhard with a heart of gold and well-served by his veteran seiyuu Inada Tetsu. Sawashiro Miyuki has voiced a stunning array of characters this year, but none, save perhaps Kana in Parasyte, was as intriguing as Rita.

-{D5}- [Best World Setting] Log Horizon, Kill la Kill, Gin no Saji 2

Log Horizon is an obvious choice, but the others may raise some eyebrows. Usually "world setting" conjures up elaborate fantasy or sci-fi universe, but I thought both Hounnji Academy and the agricultural setting of Silver Spoon were quite complete, and unusually interesting, "worlds" themselves.

-{D6}- [Best Credits Theme] Zankyou no Terror OP, Kill la Kill OP2, Samurai Flamenco ED2

I watched a couple of different lists of top-50 songs at YouTube to refresh my memory. The first conclusion I reached was how remarkably similar most OP/ED songs are. That makes the haunting "Trigger," the OP for Zankyou no Terror, stand out from the crowd. Zankyou has a solid ED, too, but I tried to limit my choices to one song per show. KlK's ED1 was also a strong contender given its tribute to Ryuko's forebear, the yoyo-wielding Saki in Sukeban Deka. "Mineral Miracle Muse" gives a stirring performance in the jazzy second closing to Samurai Flamenco with some lovely artwork of the girls, too.

Parasyte would have been my top show in 2014 if it had completed this year.

I'm stunned by the lack of enthusiasm for Kill la Kill in the nominations so far. To me it felt like a breath of fresh air in an anime world that has grown pretty stale in the past few years. KlK also generated enough interest to warrant a sub-forum here, but so far it feels like an orphaned child.

Maybe most of all I'm surprised to see a lack of Mushishi!

I tried watching the original Mushishi a couple of times, and it just never held my attention. I've thought about giving it another try, but haven't done so yet. As for Ping Pong, I've never been much of a fan of Yuasa's work, but this is also on my list of things I should watch.

I don't really keep track of movies much. I watched most of the third Madoka movie and didn't really like it as much as the original series. I usually like to see movies in a theater rather than watching them at home, so I'm waiting for films like Kagura to get wider distribution.

One series that might have been on my list for 2014 went off a cliff: Zankyou no Terror.
