I know sfdebris well from his absolutely scathing Star Trek: Voyager reviews (which are truly hilarious reviews for anybody who's seen that show and thought it was pretty bad). And he's clearly not someone who absorbs a lot of recent anime. Taking that altogether, his overall assessment of Madoka Magica Episode 1 is pretty positive, and speaks well of the show.

The foreshadowing in Madoka Magica Episode 1 really is quite effective when even more mainstream audiences can quickly pick up on it, and see where the show is going.

Chuck Sonnenberg is nothing but a fair cop. He might riff almost everything he does, but he has a pretty good sense on whether or not something he's reviewing is good, flawed, or absolutely atrocious.

Also. episode 2 is up.

His talk about how much better it is to re-watch episode 1 than it is to watch it reminded me of a comparison video with episode 10. It just reminds me how well directed PMMM really was.

Spoiler for Episode 10:

The pivot in the hallway still gives me a little chill every time.

Episode 3 is up.

Mami makes a stupid suggestion.... I think they should have put the abridged version.

Mami: You can ask Kyubey for a fabulous cake!
Madoka: What? Holy s***!

Surprisingly great. This really up-ends the whole magical girl genre. It's like they took magical girls and Evangelion-ized it.

SF Debris reviews episode 7.

Interesting observation (or maybe I'm just thick for not noticing it before) about the series being essentially four mini-arcs focusing on different characters (1-3 Mami, 4-6 Sayaka, 7-9 Kyoko, 10-12 Homura).

Seems to work for me. I know he had problems with his website last week, but I thought it had been cleared up by now.
