A brief summary.

-The de-miliatarization of Russia continues at a steady pace and sanctions will prevent an easy reconstruction/modernization of their military.
-The "no limits" partnership betweeen Russia and China so far has very clear limits, which seem to increase with time.
-The Russian army advancement has been stopped, something that would have been unthinkable two years ago.
-Continuous attacks on Russian infraestructure on Russsian territory by Ukraine operatives has been normalized, something that would have been unthinkable two years ago.
-Russian black sea fleet is playing the mouse part in a mouse and cat game.
-Russian air force range of operation has been continually reduced.

Now, the fearless prediction. The war will end this year! Why? The USA has bigger dragonfish to fry and putin's goverment will crash hard because he is betting EVERYTHING on this war, he never had a plan B, he has no exit strategy and young russians are not used to the hardships of the soviet era. The clock is ticking and putin knows it is attached to a bomb.

I don't imagine the war surviving to 2025. At least not in a meaningful way. Not in a way that the US President will have a say in the outcome after the Inauguration in January.

Russia can press on, but the questions will start to be "at what cost" and "for what gain?" Both Finland and Sweden have joined NATO. That's already a massive lose for Putin's goals of stopping NATO spreading. Urkaine is clearly not going to stay under Russian influence after two years of war that was suppose to take like a week.

What I don't know is where the border will end up. Will Russia manage to keep some of its gains? Will is keep the Donbas, Luhansk and Crimea (or the other oblasts they have annexed)? Will Ukraine manage to push them back to their pre-2014 borders? Will Ukraine ever get their displaced peoples back from wherever the Russians took them?

I think the answer is clear even for the russian population; this war has cost russian hundread of thousands of lives (that is why putin is barking about russian women should give birth to five children on average), has cost them the lucrative european market and will give birth to a lost generation, russians will talk about how good life was prior to the invasion.

Ukraine is clearly not going to stay under Russian influence after two years of war that was suppose to take like a week.

I don't think this will stop there, the last empire from the age of empires will crumble.

What I don't know is where the border will end up.

I think eventually they will recover their borders, the only question in my mind is whether they will get "a little extra" for their effort.

And even if that casualty number is true, Russia's population actually increases greatly thanks to this war, since millions of Ukrainians are now Russian.

You are under assumption said people will not escape their captors the moment they get the chance ... oh, you are under the impression that the russsian (specialy outside the two big cities) way of life is definetively superior to the Ukranian way of life and they will choose out of their free will to stay My bet is that when the time is right millions of russians will shout "I'm Ukranian" just like they have atm ditched russia to go live abroad.

If said peace of land is mostly inhabited by Ukranians I see no reason why not. As for war crimes, you should already know that only the winners can play that card.

But keep dreaming, and pretend that spectacular failure of a counter offensive didn't happen.

That is, if we believe that everything didn't work just as planned. If the plan was to recover a large piece of territory, yeah then it was a failure. But if the plan was to perform year long an asymetrical war of attrition while giving up small pieces of land, then it was a success. Remember, a frog (or a bear) will jump from the hot water if you increase the temperaure too fast
