Mentar I think I understood the technicalities of your post about as much as I did the first episode of this crazy show.
I defiantly think this is one that merits a repeat viewing because there was just so much going on so fast I'm 99% sure I missed more then a few things. Pretty fun show nonetheless though.

maho?
Man, this looks to be a great, hyperactive series. And I can't wait to see how the (possibly 8) EDs will work out, in terms of fansubbing and whatnot. edit: Yay, Yuuka blinks now. Last edited by bitmapchaos; 2008-04-14 at 23:58. Reason: I feel a great sense of accomplishment. |

Batshit crazy is about right. Someone mentioned FLCL earlier and of course, all kinds of shows want to be OOC and batshit like FLCL. But the thing is, there's only one FLCL. Not only was it able to be OOC and batshit better than any other series, but there was a point to all of it - all of that insanity drove the show somewhere with the characters and plot and having the coolest soundtrack ever didn't hurt either. FLCL was lightning in a bottle, alchemy, a one in a billion shot - we'll not see its like again.
So - it's not doing this show (or any show) a favor to make the comparison. On it's own merits, it does a pretty damn fine job of being insane and exhausting, so points for that. The premise is amusing in an utterly preposterous way. Now we'll have to see if any of the supporting characters or the writing have legs. |

Ep 1
This tries too hard to be random. My problem with random is that anyone can write random. All you have to do is come up with a whole heap of whacked out characters and situations, and the less sense the whole thing makes, the better. And that's all there is to this. The problem is that it'll always be hit-and-miss. See Seto no Hanayome for details. In all honesty, I've grown bored of random. It'll be a minor miracle if I'm still with this three episodes from now. Oh well, back to Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei...

I knew someone would pick me up on that (particularly seeing how I was quite deliberate with that comment).
No, it's not. It's seemingly random, which is why I think it's such a work of genius. But at its core it's satire, and a lot of the humour is basically just taking real life observations and phenomena to their logical extensions. It's a bit like Futurama in that respect (although a hell of a lot funnier). When you think about SZS's jokes, you see that a serious amount of thought has gone into them. You can't really see that same sort of thought process in other more random comedies.

Good lord could Kyouka be just a little more perfect. A cat loli thinking she's god, bossing everyone around, treating everyone else like dirt beneath her feet, making them lick said feet. I think I found my logical end point for the prime example of lolidom. Kyouka takes the cake, the bowl, heck the entire table.
