I was at Barnes and Nobel today, and saw a new ( well new because I haven't seen it before) vol for a new Chapter, translated as After Midnight chapter, or something like that, I'll probably get to it eventually, especially since it features an older Mion. I'm still waaaay back at the second Chapter, but anyway is it any good?

The story serves as a transition chapter somewhere between Tsumihoroboshi-hen and Minagoroshi-hen. It also probably has the most character development Mion gets at one time. Otherwise, the character designs are arguably the worst of all the artists (case in point, Rika's cameo). Still, it's not all bad.

This is very questionable.
The cover is black, thus placing it with the Question Arcs, not the Kai arcs.

It most certainly didn't take place after the Tsumihoroboshi-hen we saw, so it definitely isn't between that and Minagoroshi-hen.

I believe it's a good arc to put between the Question and Answer arcs like Yen Press is doing.

It seems like both Onisarashi-hen and Yogoishi-hen tell the aftermath of variants of Tatarigoroshi-hen and Tsumihoroboshi-hen, respectively. In terms of placement, it seems better to place Yogoishi-hen after Tsumihoroboshi-hen to avoid even more confusion.

There have been zero details about Rena acting on her mental problems before the question arcs, so it seems really out of place (even for Ryukishi07) to bring them up before their due time.

As for Onisarashi-hen (which should be out before too long), I think it would have been best to release it right after Tatarigoroshi-hen, if not have a simultaneous release with Himatsubushi-hen.

The only event that seems to tie Onisarashi-hen to any arc is the Great Hinamizawa Disaster. I can see why it would be placed with the Question Arcs, but I could make the same case for tying Onisarashi-hen to the ending to Tsumihoroboshi-hen in the Answer Arcs.

Again, both placement scenarios have their own merits, but for first-time readers of the series, I think my theoretical placement has a more logical order.

And that's one reason why Yoigoshi-hen is a Question Arc, it hints at Tsumihoroboshi-hen, but it isn't our Tsumihoroboshi-hen. I think it's very smart myself. It's pretty much foreshadowing.

Setting it between our Tsumihoroboshi-hen and Minagoroshi-hen is impossible, not only because they're chronological, but because Rena doesn't blow up the school in our Tsumihoroboshi-hen, so putting Yoigoshi in that same timeline makes no sense.

About the "zero details" on Rena acting out, that's not entirely true since her past was brought up in Onikakushi-hen, and her crazy behavior regarding Oyashiro-sama is further cemented in Tatarigoroshi-hen. Again, Yoigoshi-hen foreshadows the event, which works very well with it's placement between the Question and Answer arcs. It makes the events of Tsumihoroboshi seem less random after our Meakashi pretty much told Watanagashi-hen from a different POV.

Saying it hints at a Tsumihoroboshi-hen that is chronologically different than ours is in and of itself an anachronism. Placing Yogoishi-hen first means that first everything went wrong, and then everything was made right (which MAY be true, i.e. Rika's line "If I had tried harder that time, then we wouldn't be here now."). Saying our Tsumihoroboshi-hen doesn't make sense because it wouldn't show up until after Meakashi-hen, so in fact, the good ending would be the alternate reality.

While, yes, Rena does let some of her darker side slip out in previous arcs, Tsumihoroboshi-hen is the only arc that explicitly details her issues and her extensive lashing out. By comparison, all the other arcs merely gave brief hints that something is not quite right in Rena's world. Yogoishi-hen in the only other arc that directly states Rena is responsible for some violent act in Hinamizawa.


As for arc placement:

I might concede that this is a clever way to foreshadow the final events of Tsumihoroboshi-hen. However, that sort of placement make the arc read more like a fan-fiction. The story focuses on the fact that the event occurred, not the reasons why (then again, this could be a personal complaint with how Yogoishi-hen itself is crafted). In this regard, the events of Tsumihoroboshi-hen seem just as random no matter where Yogoishi-hen is placed. At least placing it after Tsumihoroboshi-hen allows the readers to infer that Tsumihoroboshi-hen was a main-variant world, Keiichi's epiphany was a miracle, and that Yogoishi-hen takes place in a world that is not "our Tsumihoroboshi-hen."

That "Higurashi no Naku You ni" doujinshi (vol.1 is scanlated by GGAL)... anyone knows, last two volumes have been scanlated yet?

That series is so damn cool! I see it better than Minagoroshi-hen, or I can say... it upgraded that arc to version 2.5
