Well, the emo-est is Shinji. He cries, he gets mad all the time. He's so moody. The Emo King.

It's gotta be Shinji. He's emo even before the term became so big in the world today.

In any case, it's becoming boring seeing his name to be the only emo on the list so let's ignore him for a few seconds and look at the other people with emo-ness-ness (or at least had a period of emo)

Itoshiki Nozomu, from Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei: Hrm, everything he does is quite emo (going beyond that point and past neurotic as well), but as the spectator I really couldn't take it seriously.

Harima Kenji, from School Rumble: Uhh... generally speaking, during some misunderstandings or other similar events (leaving school after seeing Tenma and Karasuma eating lunch together, joining the fishing boat thing after the school festival event), translating that into the real world makes it seem quite emo (a little too far though). For the same reason as Itoshiki I don't take those actions seriously. (seriously, it's school rumble!)

edit: uhh... right now i'm actually busy so i'd add some actual emo later on.

Ikari Shinji wins the most emo character award easily, however I only give that award to for his Anime depiction. In the manga they rectified his character, so he is actually tolerable, so I award most emo Manga character to Sasuke.

that's not completely true. even if you have a crap-ass past, that won't mean you'd be an oozing pile of emo like Shinji. in fact, i do know one character--bad childhood-thing--and he's not emo. and that character is...

I don't know what the definition for emo is for you guys... but for me, just because a character had a few vulnerable moments, it doesn't scream emo.

I mean, the big difference between Sasuke and Kira (can't add Shinn since I never watched GSD) in comparison to the Emo King Shinji... is that Sasuke and Kira would just mope (well, Kira would anyway) and then they'll be back on their track struggling to make people understand or fighting for what they want. XD

Shinji though... boy... that kid is just lost and confused like 95% of the series, isn't he?

I nominate Kira Yamato form Gundam Seed.

He was told by Shinji is Super Robot Wars to stop being so Emo. When Shinji is telling you to stop being so emo, you know you hit rock bottom.

I agree, having a sad past does not justify being emo all the time. There are characters who use their sad past to justify their whining all the time (coughsasukecough) and then there are those who use it as a reason to get stronger and move forward.

Perfect examples are the whole Strawhat crew from One Piece - all of them have sad pasts (some of which really sad and have almost moved me to tears) and yet none of them are emo (perhaps with the exception of one - but it was only for a short time).

The biggest problem with Shinji is that he is all of the above things that people has stated, but we hate him cause he DOESNT DO A DAMN THING ABOUT IT. Okay, I'm done now.

Shinji from NGE is emo? No, he's just f**ked up in the head. There's a difference. And people here really don't understand the effect being pressured into piloting a giant bio-mecha with your mother's soul inside would have on a 14 year old boy, let alone one with as many problems as Shinji.

One thing I have learned from NGE is that everyone is severely screwed up in the head in that anime.

Shinji just so happened to be one of those screwed up kids, and I don't think in that anime he was really any exception. I mean, look at Asuka, she has a severely screwed up past too and other than being psychotic and happy-trigger at times, she chose to deal with her issues.

Of course, it is also how we choose to define emo I guess.

In my term, I see it as someone that chose to give up against their problems and yet hopes that the world will yield around their surrounding while ideally doing nothing.

Shinji has that kind of character, he has such a pessimistic outlook in life (not that I blame him) he had just given up giving his best... but lives just because he had hope that the world would eventually understand. Most of the series and even until the end of End of EVA, someone had to force him and push him to do something.

Even after that, he was still all stumbling and wanting to curl back to his old moping hole. That pretty much just define emo to me.

I think it is agreed that the winner of "the Most Emo Anime Character" -title goes to NGE's Shinji.

Well the other ones (Shinji from NGE or Kira) might be as much or even more emo, but I have personal hatred for that guy. =)
