The empire seems to be in experimental phase. Ainz can do it fine but I expect prejudice.

The Kingdom is a realistic portrayal of early Medieval society. Tiny little lords with their own lands and armies, swearing loyalty to a king but otherwise having absolute power over their own peasants. Peasants get their crops taken away, their daughters raped and sold as slaves, because the Lord said so. The King needed the Lords to actually stay a king so he can't actually do anything about it.

Empire is the next level up, the Emperor has his own army that is bigger and can directly beat down any lord that goes out of line, the lords become just governors and can't have control over national policy. In theory a good Emperor can improve a nation better than a good King in a Kingdom. In practice a bad Emperor destroys everything overnight.

Ainz's own nation is effectively an Empire, just more extreme in that he nearly needs nothing from his human subjects. By not needing to conscript soldiers or apply heavy taxes, it also means he can't be pressured into anything by his subjects. He does not need to compromise. Those he subjugated can't force him to change his policies no matter how much they dislike it. Ainz can ban slavery and accept the fallout and political drama that follows, if only because he breaks the convention that a ruler can't rule alone. Ainz DOES rule alone, or at least the Tomb does.
