You're quite right that SDF Macross is a war story, and that many people think of the Valkyries first whenever the show is mentioned. However, it is also a war story with quite a large amount of character development, and almost shojou levels of romantic character interaction.

Many Macross fans describe the show, and have since it first debuted, as a soap opera in space. Giant war machines are not the reason for that.

The mecha and sci-fi trappings are all skin deep. The story was a whole could work equally well in a modern day setting, or even a WW2 setting. The character development presented could even work without the war at all. Love triangles of this kind are hardly monopolized by war stories.

Quite simply, however, SDF Macross would not be SDF Macross without both elements. Since that time the show's creators have played with the balance of these elements over the course of sequels. Macross Plus was more about the mecha and the action, while Macross 7 pushed the character developement and themes.

So the AFOS was a doomsday weapon left by the Protoculture to terminate its genetic experiment (mankind) if they developed or acquired spacefaring technology without first learning to at least eliminate war among themselves (The UN only detected the AFOS through radar technology salvaged from the ASS-1 wreckage) ? Sweet plot device.

What exactly happened to Sara and Shin though? The AFOS appears unscathed by the nukes after the explosion. Did she merge with the AFOS and just decide to leave to avoid further bloodshed? Did the Mayans' song cause Shin to spontaneously evolve or something? (Or has he simply discovered the perks of Spiritia Creation?)

And what is it with mecha in anime series sprouting angelic wings of light ever since Evangelion?

and my other question is, what kind of connection you have to DL at 1000+ Kib?

I pay the highest DSL speed that they offer me and just sometimes the best I get is 125 Kib.

shin didn't have an intentions to kill nora, she was the pesky one who kept interrupting. I thought shin would eventually shoot her down but the way they handled it showed she was able to talk the talk and walk the walk. Shin was good, but not good enough to kill our outright.

I'm a bit confused by the anti-UN forces though. Was their ultimate plan to let AFOS destroy the world? If yes, why was noras boyfriend so upset it killed her? isn't that what they wanted all along?

well, there are different interpretations of the ending

1. Shin and Sara warped away from Earth.
2. Shin and Sara died.
3. Sara died, Shin got saved by Sara's spirit.
4. Sara warped away from Earth, Shin got saved by Sara and remained on Earth.

one thing to keep in mind, 3 year after Macross Zero, all people on Earth got blown into oblivion in the Doomsday, only a couple hundred thousands people survived. So it doesn't really matter that much on who lived or who died...

So for us poor deprived ones out there who have yet to see any Macross stuff yet (yes we exist, though our numbers dwindle quicker than WWII vets), would we be better off watching Macross Zero before Macross or not?

In other words, is Macross Zero a prequel that can only be properly understood/appreciated after seeing original Macross, or would it be okay to go Macross Zero -> Macross?
