But just take a look at the "plot summary" in the wiki article of Demian. If you read the novel translation of LMS, you will notice that there are "two worlds" as well.

The story takes place in the near future, so it's possible that Weed got the "oldest, most battery efficient model of smartphones" for a cheap enough prize to buy it.

It's no surprise, really. Technology is often adapted to the time the adaption of a work is released. (in this case 2007 -> 2015)

By your logic, a novel set during the middle ages, would have guns, when adapted. Do not make an argument where there is none.

In the near future that kind of phone would be cheap. And I remember reading that the latest phone in their time are already using hologram when talking with each other.

There are precendents though. Off the top of my head I can think of HunterxHunter and the toaru series. I cannot remember anyone complaining about such changes.

Think of mobile in 1995~.
At 1995 not everyone have mobile
after 10 (2015+) everyone and their grandma/grand daughter had one

Also, unlike 2010~
Right now old LCD phone have same price if not lower than flip phone.

The character design isn't what I was expecting. But I really like it. I don't have anything against the fan art that everyone uses, but this is a much better fit.
