It reminds me that in the ending lyrics of Yōjo Senki one of the strophes says: Go forth! Prove that we can build A pile of bodies that can reach the heavens! |

How dark is this anime series likely to get? There's a lot of ugly things that happen on the inside of our bodies, ranging from incurable diseases like late-stage cancer, to addiction, to organ transplantation/rejection, to deadly allergic reactions, to auto-immune disorders. Can you imagine the white blood cell characters attacking innocent cells or worse? What are we in store for?
Has this series even covered apoptosis (programmed cell death) yet? Unless the timescale of this series is very limited, we'll have to see that stuff eventually. Without apoptosis you get cancer, after all. |

Well for tiny cells it is. Millions of cells died that day, disappearing into the abyss, tragic, really tragic~
But there is a spin-off called BLACK which is about an unhealthy body and where you see the cells getting eaten by Macrophages and red blood cells getting ripped apart by bacteria and so on.

Guess they need to take it seriously all the time. After all, without the work from the immune system, it would be. I've had stupid stuff like toenail infections getting the doctor to just give me urgently a cycle of antibiotics just in case. Apparently there's been cases of people getting sepsis even from something like that, if untreated.

Episode 3:
They need more cells like macrophage. What a badass. Thought episode 3 was pretty intense in terms of action. Influenza may be common but can also be serious left untreated. I like how they protrayed the virus like zombies for an invasion.

I wonder if there will be episodes where drugs or antibiotics are introduced into the body. How about things like "synthetic biotics," ordinary probiotics, or even vitamins? It doesn't sound like the Japanese take vitamins all that much.. Probiotics, on the other hand, appear to be a growth market.

The end of episode 3 was a bit confusing. The truth is that even if you had just overcome an "A" influenza, a newly arrived "B" virus might still send your B and T cells flying. This is because these cells tend to become specialized when they fight against virus, and only work against one particular type. So the strength of the virus is not necessarily a big factor.
Also, I am kind of glad they glossed over the part where the macrophage eats the dead cell to find out what kind of virus it contains. Their name means "big eater" because they eat their enemies, often alive. So, not quite as attractive as portrayed in the anime! |

If cells infected by influenza are like zombies, then cancer cells would be what, vampires? |

I'm not sure if I want to call dendritic cell's old photos (aka cytokines) a stroke of genius by the author of call wtf on the whole things. Probably both? It's hilarious, but it makes me question how are stuff like chemokine response gonna be depicted. Like, is DC actually gonna be a mail man and deliver chemokines in the form of letters to immune cells to get them to come to a specific location?

I continue to smile at the profusion of A-list seiyuu who work on this show. This week we get to hear the ever-17 Inoue Kikuko in the Macrophage role. She, like Noto, can sound like the sweetest woman imaginable yet is horribly dangerous. ANN doesn't yet have the seiyuu for Naive T Cell yet. Anyone know who it was? Were there two voice-actors, one for his wimpy voice, and another for his bad-ass one?
This show is hilarious and for me, who hasn't taken biology in over fifty years, educational. So is this thread. A big thank you to the people here who are sharing their knowledge with us.

Watching an episode of this show makes time fly by so fast. <3
Poor Naive T-cell, so scared of those Zombie cells and terrorized by his colleges as well. But then he did a Jojo-transformation and kicked Zombie ass! Loved how it showed how all the different parts of the body worked together to overcome the influenza-virus, temperature rising, sweating, muscles contraction to keep the heat in, etc and etc. But in the end they just got a new virus they had to remake the formula against. Tough luck, guys. xD And next episode: BEST GIRL APPEARS!!! It is a shame we see so little of her, but she is best girl indeed! Such a wonderful, hard-working person! <3 <3 <3
