(L) The Surprise of Haruhi Suzumiya (Novels 10/11) Spoiler Discussion

Yasumi was playing Cupid.

Without going into a whole thesis, suffice to say that the Future is uncertain. Which branch of a probable future would become the canon history depends on the choices made by Kyon. And Yasumi was lobbying Kyon for the Haruhi-route.

The first hop into the college years, lets Kyon see a more mature, stable, dare I say sensual Haruhi. The brief exchange suggests Haruhi was surprised, but not shocked, at a time hopping Kyon. So (perhaps) in this future Haruhi is (made) aware of her powers (by John Smith). And her collegian appearance will again sell many a NewTypes.

sneaky, and things get even better....

The second hop into Haruhi's bedroom on the eve of SOS-dan 1st Year Anniversary to surprise her awake is the best (if not kosher) way Kyon can do to impress Haruhi, with the rest of the group giving support outside a la a Christmas carol adding more points. If that's not a deal closer for her I don't know what is.

Which begs the question: who is this Yasumi. Itsuki's explanation that she's an Haruhi alter ego is suspect (due to his ulterior, personal interest in Haruhi, or perhaps he doesn't want to freak Kyon out). Throughout the novels she's described to share traits from Haruhi and Kyon-sis. And the signature pin on her head belonged, and now still belongs to Haruhi. Which leads to an inescapable conclusion:

Now it almost feels like we've gotten too much information about the possible future. I was still hoping a lot more of that could have been left a mystery, even if it's still uncertain to happen.

And I'm confused as to how Yasumi is a Red Herring. Doesn't all the evidence you point out support the fact that she's connected to Haruhi in some important manner?

Is it explained how the mess with the two Closed Spaces and Fujiwara's scheme and all that is resolved? We're just suddenly taken from that into the time slip a month in the future...I haven't read the epilogue yet but I'm assuming everything's explained there (or will be in future novels?)

Spoiler for I wish someone would just translate first:

all the shippy scenes :P It looks like there is a lot of KyonHaruhi goodness (insert squee) and some real wicked moments of awesome, like our favorite esper finally showing some angry side of him, and Mikuru going kyaah over a certain adorable new character :3 It'll keep me patient until our beloved fellow fans find the time they need to translate the rest of the novels best they can

Oh and I was referring to my suspicion about a certain new moe character- about my first post.

After reading a translation of Rainy Day yesterday, I felt it was a good short story.

Spoiler for Rainy Day thoughts:

Sasaki telling Kyon that he has to move forward towards his dreams rather than just waiting for them to happen is for sure an echo of what Haruhi tells him later in Melancholy. It's also interesting that he got his "yare yare" catch phrase from Sasaki. This story made me like Sasaki as a character since my only exposure to her has been through wikis and spoilers. It's interesting to see how Sasaki has influenced both Haruhi and Kyon as people.

I know that I would love to see Sasaki animated at some point.

I don't know much about various seiyuu since I tend to watch more dubbed anime than subtitled(I have watched Haruhi both ways). On another forum, someone suggested Noto Mamiko for Sasaki.

Would they go with people they have used before, or newbies? They have, oh, six people to cast, I think (including the student council president). Two males and four females.

Of course they might also pull cast members from K-On or Nichijou. And considered just how many seiyuu they are getting to work in Nichijou, KyoAni has a lot of people they can call up (especially all the known people they have in their previews and the more random skits that don't involve the main cast members)

Although this is a spoiler board, it would still be irresponsible for me to mix in my own subjective speculations of the unwritten plot (that's where half the story sits, and the readers' own joy to discover and theorize) with what is written. People who have not read the story yet are vulnerable to Inception. So I'll be careful, and you still keep a big grain of salt in front of your monitor.

How Time works is central to this and many other Haruhi stories. But by Vol.11 we still don't quite know how exactly Tanigawa's Time works. It's probably deliberate. The author doesn't want to give away the shop and, I believe, knowing how Time works might automatically reveal the true intentions of the Mikuru(Big) faction, which may or may not serve the best interest of other SOS-dan members (look for the guilty expressions of Mikuru(Big) in certain moments of anime).

At the climax of Surprise it was revealed that (besides the sibling part) (a) Future CAN change, and (b) Mikuru(Big) and Fujiwara are from different/alternate futures. This differs from the typical SciFi time-traveling paradigm of "I can't help do the right thing for the future, because there's could be only one future." Fujiwara's future is predicated on Haruhi losing her power. We know she won't, yet Fujiwara existed.

Nevermind the seeming paradox, setup like this actually creates better story opportunities down the road. Who's to say Mikuru's future will be the the one chosen, or for that matter Mikuru(Big) is the definite future of Mikuru(Small)? Ah, the possibilities.

That makes me imagine the Haruhi timestream to be something more like a tree, where each branch is a different future. Going back in time just moves you back into the trunk, or original timeline. Interesting...
