Narcissu
Narcissu is a free visual novel by the dōjin group stage-nana, telling the story of a terminally ill young man and woman.
Narcissu is an experimental work: it uses minimalist graphics in a very narrow window, and includes two full scripts, one accompanied by a voice track, and the other adapted to work without voices. In the English translation, different translators translated each version, to provide different perspectives on the story. I've played about half through the first installment and it's a beautiful novel. The music really adds to the story. I might even import the soundtrack CD, it's that good. Can't really describe the story, since I'd be spoilling pretty fast. Just download the game below< install < play. http://narcissu.insani.org/down.html In-game screenshots: There are 2 other installments, which till date hasn't been translated yet. If nayon has any updated information about this, please notify it here. |

Still my favorite visual novel. Its soundtrack is something I listen on a regular basis.
Its greatest quality I'd say would be the impression it leaves; it stayed like a stain on my heart for a week. Made me contemplate life and just admire the little things more. |

Enjoy waiting forever. Haeleth's N2 translation is the Duke Nukem Forever of VN fan translations. (Although if you're lucky, Ixrec might translate it.)
As for N3, the scripts are on TLWiki in case anyone wants to translate it. |

Narcissu is the first visual Novel which I played [only the visual Novel translated in French has the hour current…]
The history is splendid, the images are simple but go well with environment general and the music is perfectly adapted… And quite simply sublimates! I like much the version with voice because I find the voice of Setsumi very beautiful and enough melancholic. Narcissu playing was for me a very good experiment has besides read it several times. I find however the history very sad, it was one of the first times or I almost poured a tear. ^^

Narcissu was the very first VN I played and it remains as one of my favourite not only for nostalgia reasons but in the way it presented itself. When I look at Narcissu and then look at other romance/dramas like Clannad, I can see a significant difference in "maturity" in its storytelling (though I love both of them). Was part of the platform spring that led me into my liking of the seinen/josei romance/drama genre.
I thought Narcissu 2nd english translation was in vapoware, only to realise a few days ago that it was translated. Finished it the day I found it/downloaded . I found that Narcissu 2nd had a more "hopeful" atmosphere and wasn't as weary or depressing as the 1st. Musical score was superb like the 1st. And that eufonius OP is <3. Hoping that someday there may be a short anime/OVA series of this. Maybe the 6 episode style that Hantsuki or Eve no Jikan was successful for. |
