Hurf, I looked way up, and way down, but it was hiding in plain sight nearby.

Although the significance of the sequence right at the beginning is impressive, I'm also impressed by the effort they're putting in to keep up the style; I had focused on studying preform orthography for some time, so just seeing it in the trailer was enough to sell me, but having it all over and with a nice eye to detail (lots of itaiji, old okurigana, and of course keeping proper orthography) is great.

They are taken directly from the novel close to the end of the chapter, although they use katakana for whatever reason.

I watch each episode twice when I first watch it, once through I won't pause for any text flashes. (Makes for a good effect in the mood.)
The second time I will pause for text flashes.

It's actually just poorly worded. He really wants to go with his passions and embrace her, but he realizes that it would hurt her as she is now and he doesn't want to lose her like this. So he decides to keep their relationship non-physical for now. She did say that she'd deal with her problems eventually and he believes her and is willing to wait.

P.S. They really made it hard to read though. How I hate katakana...especially when they throw in some weirdness for good measure.

hmm wow... I didnt realize a hug can be that dramatic, to the point of her hating him for doing it. I guess her issues is beyond my comprehension

Well she was almost raped. She also realizes that she still hasn't gotten over it. That's why she asked him to wait because she didn't want Koyomi to be associated with the bastard any way.

It looks like the Kanji are just numbered in order. The first Kanji in the text is "01," the next Kanji to appear is "02," and so on.

Text flashes disorient the viewer, putting them into a trance-like state of mind more appropriate for enjoying the show. Atmosphere is important in anime, and Shinbou really excels at it. Though he's used these flashes before, they're usually there for the sake of a punchline. Bakemonogatari's first time he's used them so liberally and creatively.

The colored frames also provide a stream-of-consciousness element to the anime, juxtaposing Araragi's thoughts with his narration and his actions.
