Actually, I'm kind of surprised at the lack of female characters in this game, especially for a JRPG.

Considering past Final Fantasy games has featured playable females, it feels backwards that this particular one has to resort to an all-male playable cast just because the story said so (Nomura really couldn't come up of female companions for the MC? ). And not to mention with the whole "lack of playable female protagonists" in AAA games permeating lately, this doesn't really help.

Maybe it'll change. Maybe some of his guy friends are going to get killed off so he'll end picking up female characters not shown yet to replace them in his party; who knows? But for now, first impressions is iffy despite the pretty cool action RPG game play.

...Why in the world should the developers have to include playable female characters if the story doesn't support them? Shoehorning them into a narrative where they have no purpose just for the sake of some tortured definition of equality sounds terrible to me. Just because you can play as a girl does not make the game automatically not sexist, and vice versa.
Also, playable characters are not the same thing as protagonists, so...

I agree with Kaisos Erranon. Let's give guys a chance to shine on their own. If there's a female playable character in FFXV, I probably won't mind, but they shouldn't cram a female into the party just for the sake of it.

Nomura isn't really good with making female characters from what I can tell and romantic relationships in general imo. :/ Which is why I consider Riku x Sora to be canon instead of Sora x Kairi. Just wait for the sequel which has a 90% chance of having Stella as the main character if she's still alive at the end of XV.

I totally understand, and I want them too but the chances of high-five with a girl are pretty slim... unless Noctis taps them on the butt after every successful combo. But he isn't that kind of a character so...

I wish they would have individualized the guys' color schemes a bit more so then it would look more varied instead of all black.

Q: Are there any artists or games in particular that have inspired you or that fans should check out?

A: The reason I joined Square was because I loved Amano-san's art (Yoshitaka Amano, who has done "FF" logos and design since the beginning). When I was in high school, my art teacher told me about Amano-san. I really only joined because of him; I wasn't interested in the gaming world at all. In a way, it was him who hired me, and whom I respect the most.

Heh, reminds how Uematsu didn't originally join Square for game music either when he was much younger.

Again, I doubt the cast composition has anything with Nomura's ability to make females characters (Stella seems to already well liked ). He's done tons of them over the years and a lot of them have been pretty popular. The choice has all to do plot and setting, much like FFX-2's all playable female cast.

I'm a little confused with that article headline. What is Nomura's role in this game? Is he directing the whole game instead of only taking part with the art direction?

He is the Director, Character Designer (though only partially) and one behind the concept of the game. The Art Director is someone else.
