Man, I remember reading the manga ages ago and it gets an anime now? Seems good so far, a little boring perhaps for how normal they are doing the buzz game and not over-the-top as usually done in such animes.

This is an interesting concept to make into an anime series but I wonder how they'll keep it entertaining.

Episode 1:

Fukami reminds me of Chihaya from Chihayafuru for some reason...

It was okay I guess but the humor felt really cheesy and doesn't escape cliche pitfalls. (I mean, accidentally seeing a girl's panties..) The quiz stuff got me interested into the show though as viewers can play along with the episodes.

I might have to get used to Fukami's voice a bit. She sounds strange imo.

That quizz circle president is good. Enthusiastic, charismatic, clever...

Does the girl have an accent or something? She sounded different.

Well, there was a quizz team in Chihayafuru too. They were training their hearing and reflexes for quizz bowls.

The quizzes were the best parts, and I'm assuming it will stay that way in at least the near future.
Have to agree that the main heroine's voice sounds uneasy. I heard some people say she is a new voice actress, which could explain it. Or, perhaps that's what was in the vision of the director: Make the girl sound so bland or strange to give the viewer a certain impression on her. Like, she is just the girl you don't look out for normally, or whatever. This could also be used as to hide character traits for surprising later on. If that's the case, then hopefully they did a great job on it. I'm probably giving them too much credit though. XD

Despite that, I still like the voice of her because it's just not something you hear very often. It makes the show unique; albeit awkward, but unique.

Fukami's VA is new, apparently. That explains the rather "unpolished" (?) feel to it. I kinda like it though, and good for her for getting a main character role.

Anyway, really liking this one so far. Trying to answer the questions yourself along with the characters makes it more fun imo .

Horie Shun is relatively new as well - his main role was in 12-Sai (where he was the best character in the cast). I like having fresh-sounding actors in main roles - it makes a nice change.

Kawashima Umi (Fukami) has had a few roles. Interestingly she was an important character in the H x H "Phantom Rouge" movie.

I agree. I'd say so far he's my favorite character.

Not to shody a start. I guess the real decider if it's going to be a keeper or not, will be how fun the quiz's are.

Welcome to Jeopardy: The Anime, and holy cow, they delivered on the first episode! It was adapted in more or less the same way it happens in the manga, and even with the art too!

As for the voices, I liked Gakuto the most, it shows in his voice how much he loves quiz bowls! I guess for a shy bookworm Shiki sounds alright, he kinda reminds me of Tsubasa Yonaga. Mari for me is a breath of fresh air from the usual high-pitched, soft-spoken uber-moe anime female voice; in a sense she sounds more real to me, and I liked that.

As one commenter mentioned, the plan with Mari seems to be to make her an unassuming young lady, i.e., when you look at her, you don't expect her to do the things she does, especially quiz bowls. I mean, who would expect a very cute high school girl to compete in a game normally played by nerds and even be good at it?

Umika Kawashima, by the way, is also a former idol like Rena Matsui, who had a rather controversial stint as Suzune Kagami from Denpa Kyoushi. Many believed Matsui-san's performance was very much not on par (the problem was she had a rather raspy voice that doesn't really suit Suzune, and this issue never got fixed until the end of the anime series) and Suzune would be more suited for a better-known seiyuu like Kana Asumi, who voiced her in the Drama CDs, or Ayana Taketatsu, best known for voicing imoutos like Kirino Kosaka.

Kawashima-san OTOH, already got her third main character role in like 5-6 entries or so, so it's actually pretty good for her. I do hope she gets more roles in the future until she manages to get the types of roles that best suit her potential vocal range and she would be most comfortable with.

TL;DR: Idols going into voice acting is a rather mixed bag of failure and relative success.

I have to get to work now, so I'll add my quiz bowl analyses later.

First EP establishes characters, the lead's problems, and has something interesting to say about the sport straight away. Let's hope it can keep that up. Only, what's a quiz king?

Female lead sounded like fairly normal girl.

The best quiz bowl player there is, of course.

This was an interesting first episode to say the least, but really, that girl's VA was distracting.
