"Fate," A tall man with graying hair addressed the blond in front of him. "Due to your outstanding recommendations and skill proven on the battlefield I am pleased to inform you that you have been selected for this job. It will be long and hard but I know you will come through for us. The man you will be protecting is a very important person." He put a hand on his friend's shoulder and gave it a squeeze. "Fate, your promotion could very well come from this one. You will have your own small task force should this play out right."

"Sir!" With a crisp salute, she smiled. "Thank you, sir."

"Dismissed."

Fate clipped her heels and turned, walking out of the room with a bright smile on her face. 'I did it...Finally I will be in charge of my our team! Nanoha! I have to tell her!'

Once Fate made it to her room on the battalion ship she brought up her telescreen and used Bardiche to enter in the long string of numbers to connect her to Nanoha's home back on Mid-childra. "Come on.... come on." She held her breath. "Please be home... Nanoha!"

Nanoha almost jumped back at the sudden greeting. "Hey Fate-chan! You haven't called in almost a week, I was getting worried."

"Sorry," she shook her head happily. "But guess what!?"

"Hm?" She tilted her head to the side happily.

Fate opened her mouth but a cheerful voice rang up on the other side and Nanoha had to shift to allow Vivio to sit next to her. "Fate-mama! Fate-mama, look!" She held up a large sheet of paper with her drawing on it. "In class today we made mother's day cards!"

Fate blinked. "Mother's...oh!"

Nanoha laughed lightly. "She wouldn't show me until you called. Can I see it now, Vivio?"

"Mm!" Vivio turned the image so both could see. "Look," She pointed to a house drawn in crayon with Nanoha's head leaning out the window. "Nanoha-mama is right here, I am right here." She moved her finger to a stick figure with a messy drawing of her own head. "And Fate-mama is here." She moved her hand up to a shape ship in the sky holding her other mama's face."

Nanoha smiled fondly. "It looks great, Vivio... What is this?" She pointed to a line drawn from Vivio's hand to the ship.

"My teacher told me that if you want something enough you try everything you can to make it true." Vivio showed Fate the picture more clearly. "This is my holding your ship so you won't go anywhere. I'm going to pull and pull until you come back home so we can be happy again and Nanoha-mama won't cry any mo-" Her mouth was covered by Nanoha's hand quickly.

"Nya-haha, Fate-chan what was the news you wanted to say?"

Fate looked at the two in shock, mouth opening a few times before she spoke. "I...I wanted to... just say hi." Her eyes went to the picture Vivio was still holding up. "I need to go prepare, I'll... contact you again, okay?"

"Okay," Nanoha nodded. "Thanks for calling. We miss you."

"I love you, Mama!" Vivio declared, waving.

"Yeah... you too sweetheart..." Her sad eyes went to Nanoha, who looked away and rubbed her eyes with her arm. "Bye bye."

"So, Vivio, did you bring your books home to study?" Nanoha asked accusingly, eying the almost empty backpack.

"No test," Vivio declared cheerfully, pausing at their door to allow Nanoha to unlock it.

"You should still study..." Nanoha sighed as her daughter ran into the house. "Maybe I should make a study hour or so to be sure her grades don't fall..."

"Fate-mama!"

Nanoha's eyes widened slightly and she ran into the living room. "Fate-...chan?"

"I'm home," She answered softly, hugging Vivio and looking at Nanoha with tear filled eyes.

"But... I thought... Tia told me you..." Nanoha walked forward slowly, arms accepting a hug when Vivio allowed the blond to stand. "You were supposed to..."

"I'm home," Fate said again, embracing her friend. "I'm not leaving anymore."

"Fate-chan..." Nanoha gripped her hard, pulling the woman close. "...But you wanted..."

"I want to stay with you." Fate countered firmly. "As long as you two are by me I'll be happy." Moving back just enough to touch their foreheads she smiled fondly. "I want to come home to you every day. That is my real wish."

Nanoha could only hug her again, feeling her legs being embraced by Vivio as well as she tried to join in on the embrace. "I love you, Fate-chan."

Fate smiled into Nanoha's hair. "I know... I love you too."

I saw this picture on the image thread and the idea suddenly struck me...

Spoiler for Rain:

Under the blue Mid-Childan sky, a gathering was taking place. People came from far and wide to attend. Many were good friends with one another, some not having seen each other in some time while others meeting for the first time. Even the TSAB's famous admirals and Council made time out of their busy schedule to mingle amongst the mages and non-mages of all ages. Nanoha surveyed the scene from her position by one of the few trees in the clear field. While she was glad to see so many familiar faces, she wondered why it always had to be the painful reasons to really bring people together.

Everyone was dressed nicely. TSAB members wore their formal uniforms while others were in suits and simple dresses of a dark color. It was a funeral, after all. She observed as people were gathered in their own, small groups to converse. They talked about their recent accomplishments, hobbies, and about those embarrassing moments from some time ago. The talk wasn't overpowering nor was the random bits of laughter, but she could tell. As cheerful as everyone was, it was all but a mask to hide their sadness, the pain that was tearing at them from the inside. She knew because it was tearing at her, too. No tears were being shed. If anyone had anymore after the service she would have been amazed. Then again, she wondered how she had managed to cry for so long over so many days. Surely she would have dried up days ago. And yet, the tears still came, even today.

It was all like a dream, some horrible, horrible nightmare that she was waiting to wake up from. She tried to wake herself up many times, but it never worked because it wasn't a dream. It was very real. The attack on the TSAB HQ was brutal. Nothing came up on the senors until it was too late. All available mages were scrambled and any able to make it to help defend HQ did so. She didn't know how long they fought for. Bureau and enemy mages alike fell left and right. The three of them hooked up with Yuuno and took on the offensive to try and keep them from the command center. When the 4th, 6th, and 11th fleet arrived, the tide turned in their favor. The enemy was being pushed back as they slowly reclaimed the battered HQ. Then...it happened. She didn't know where they came from, but they found themselves surrounded and then...and then...

"Nanoha?"

The brunette looked up and spotted Hayate giving her a worried look, "Ah, Hayate-chan."

"Are you doing alright? You seemed kind of out of it for a moment."

Nanoha forced a smile, "I'm fine, I'm fine. I guess...just seeing all these people coming out for a single person gets to you."

Hayate nodded and looked at the gathering of people around the cemetery, "Yes, it was amazing, isn't it?"

A moment of silence passed before Nanoha pushed off the tree and walked over to the pristine black casket a few meters away. Countless bouquets and floral arrangements were placed on and around it. She stood before it and stared, a small part of her still wishing, hoping, believing that it was all a dream...some twisted nightmare. Behind her, Hayate carefully walked up to her side, making sure not to disturb her. She watched her friend tilt her head back and gaze skywards.

"I guess we should be going. It's starting to rain."

The Mistress of the Night Sky blinked in slight confusion. She took a brief glance up to the cloudless sky above before turning to her friend, "What are you talking about Nanoha? It isn..." She didn't complete her sentence and instead nodded slowly in agreement, "Yes, we should get going, huh?"

As the pair walked away from the casket, the rain continued to fall from those two blue orbs.

You know... the total lack of both Yuuno and Fate is scary.

Though it does make this fic the perfect setup for a NanohaHayate fic.

Hayate nodded and looked at the gathering of people around the cemetery, "Yes, it was amazing, isn't it?"

A moment of silence passed before Nanoha pushed off the tree and walked over to the pristine black casket a few meters away. Countless bouquets and floral arrangements were placed on and around it. She stood before it and stared, a small part of her still wishing, hoping, believing that it was all a dream...some twisted nightmare. Behind her, Hayate carefully walked up to her side, making sure not to disturb her. She watched her friend tilt her head back and gaze skywards.

"I guess we should be going. It's starting to rain."

The Mistress of the Night Sky blinked in slight confusion. She took a brief glance up to the cloudless sky above before turning to her friend, "What are you talking about Nanoha? It isn..." She didn't complete her sentence and instead nodded slowly in agreement, "Yes, we should get going, huh?"

As the pair walked away from the casket, the rain continued to fall from those two blue orbs.

Very nice and moving! (I'm thinking the funeral is for the one whose name never gets mentioned ).
