While I'm certainly looking forward to this project, I must say I'm more interested in how this bodes for the output of shows by BONES in the future.
Firstly, it looks like them opening the new D studio was mostly in preparation for it to take over B's role as I presume that it'll be completely focused on making this series (possibly for the rest of 2012) as so they don't fall back on productivity and maintain the same number of series produced. This year at least is going to have them producing less anime (as all their 4 studios are already occupied, 2 with ongoing series and the other two with movies) so I think we might get one more new series out before the end of the year. I can honestly say I'll look to that show more due to the more focus it'll receive compared to the uneven output in quality we had the past year.

I dunno if we can realistically say that this year will have BONES producing "less" anime.
2011 BONES anime: Gosick (TV) No.6 (TV) FMA Milos (movie) Towa no Quon (movie series) And that's only what has been announced. If C Studio somehow gets another TV series going in Fall 2011, then that'll be 5 anime releases from BONES in 2011. 3 TV, 2 movies. How is that less? Edit: In fact, it would be a pretty big increase from their 2010 line-up which only had Heroman, Star Driver, and Halo Legends (Prototype). |

They were also working on the Darker than Black Gaiden as well as continuing with FMA:Brotherhood so it's not a big increase.
What I meant to write was that they'd be producing less televised anime for this year (but for some reason dropped it from my post). Your right of course that the number of titles for this year matches their regular output, but in terms of content it's not the same. I do get the feeling I'll end up being proven wrong on this though

Is it really much less though?
Televised anime in 2010: FMA:B (26 eps in 2010) Heroman (26 eps) Star Driver (13 eps in 2010) Right now based on what's announced we have: Gosick (26 eps) Star Driver (12 eps in 2010) No.6 (probably 11 eps like most noitaminA shows) So right now we're looking at... at most 16 episodes less of televised content. In exchange we get one full length theatrical movie (should be about 2 hours?), and at least one episode of a "theatrical" series (should be about an hour). Although with ep1 coming in June, we could actually get another episode by the end of the year. Adding to this, you too feel that it's possible that they could have another show for Fall 2011. If this is true, then their TV output would be exactly the same as it was in 2010 in terms of episode count, and actually double what it was in 2010 in terms of actual titles. And on top of that we're getting a full length movie -and- a "movie" series. That's actually a huge increase in output this year, which is kind of scary! |

Personally I don't think that expanding the number of their internal divisions had a really good payoff on the studio's outcome.
I'm not complaining about a specific series they've done recently (I'm liking Star Driver) but in general the larger the number of series produced the lower is their quality. It is not a trade off that perfectly matches reality, but I think it's true to a certain extent. As an animation fan, I would prefer Bones to stick only to 2, maximum 3, projects per year, so that they could raise the quality by making their best staffers to work only on few things. Clearly I'm avoiding economic reasons. It may well be that their strategy is to make more series in order to increase the likelihood of having at least one stream of revenue form one project. Still, I don't think it's a really successful strategy: making lots of average or forgettable shows, spoils the studio's pedigree in the long run. It would be better to establish an external division and outsource to it the anime which are more otaku-ish or (supposedly) profitable.

http://www.towanoquon.com/character.html http://www.towanoquon.com/movie.html A trailer is apparently out, but it's region blocked, so I haven't seen it yet. Trying to get a friend to rip it for me. They revealed the rest of the cast today as well. Quon is played by Hiroshi Kamiya, and Cyborg Epsilon is played by Kousuke Toriumi. The character design for Cyborg Epsilon can be seen on the characters page. Spoiler for Epsilon design:
Other cast members without designs yet include: Kiri: Saori Hayami Miu: Chiaki Omigawa (Noooooooooooo!) Ryou: Tatsuhisa Suzuki Takao: Miyu Irino Yuuma: Mikako Komatsu 神無月星志: Toru Ohkawa Cyborg Delta: Minako Kotobuki Cyborg Alpha: Jouji Nakata 上代源治: Shinichiro Miki I'm not going to try and translate the two kanji names because it'll probably end up wrong anyway. Better to wait for an official pronunciation. |
