Since I queued up the shows I intend to watch this season I've been quite excited to see this one. This seemed like it would fill a spot left by Yahari, and ultimately it has.
I'm not familiar with WATAMOTE at all, but I'm very interested. This was some nice comedy for a first episode, and I liked the idea of it. I actually ended up pitying her quite a bit because she's actually rather cute. I have a feeling that this is going to be episodes of her undoing her own acceptable image by trying too hard. That opening was, uh... A bit of a surprise. I was getting concerned for a moment because of how dark it was. For a moment I thought that I had walked into the completely wrong genre!

Ok, what is up with so many recent anime that have "I'm a lone, friendless loser and a social reject" as their premise? Do people really relate and want to read about that?
I tried reading the manga and this girl is just so pitiful to watch. Maybe I'd enjoy it more if the market wasn't crawling with these types of stories. The opening is hilarious though. |

That OP sounded like it was taken straight out of one of the most badass action animes of all time. As for the episode itself, I liked it. It was pretty funny though..I can't say I didn't pity Tomoko just a little bit at times. Also, Is it odd that I sort of feel like Tomoko is kind of adorable?

It shouldn't be as much of a problem in future episodes if I watch them whenever I'm well-rested and energized (I watched the premiere while drained and worn out), but much of the humor centering around Tomoko's early days as a Freshman in high school stung more than they amused as they hit a little too close to home for me. It's like it's really 2002 again.
I enjoyed watching this, though, during the scenes that didn't have anything to do with high school and thus didn't make me want to put a bullet through my head (that's a joke). I love Tomoko's elation over every single vaguely successful social interaction she pulls off, and she's so cute whenever she's too shy to speak in anything but a tiny voice. S-S-Sayonara... Also, dat ass. That alone should be enough to ensure her some popularity. I don't normally even care about butts much at all, but I noticed that whenever she was crawling forward in her brother's room around 12 minutes into the episode that hers is rather nice. |

Well, uh...this kind of works as an anime? Great OP/ED. I like the voice actress. I wish they put more emphasis on the gags though, because this is going to give people the wrong impression. For the longest time manga readers were expecting other substantial characters to be introduced, expecting Kuroki to develop as a character, and expecting longer dramatic story arcs. Because with this setting, those are the usual kinds of developments.
But no, what you see is what you get, it's just a gag anime...or perhaps a cringe anime with a rather narrow target audience.Unless they're going to surprise us in a big way. :P

Can't tell if I like Tomoko's voice or not. Can't decide if it be better more 'anime-ish' or more 'regular talking narrative' kind of like Turning Girls.
Wonder if they're gonna do anything creative with the narrative since the manga was mainly just short stories with no real cohesion. As far as the jokes go, I wish it had better delivery or more punch of the end results of them. I compare the manga close to Curb Your Enthusiasm, where a lot of the end results just makes you cringe or get embarrassed for her. In the anime, its just "oh okay" then it goes on to the next scene with no transition or hint that it was the end of the scene. I did enjoy the conversation Tomoko had with her brother. Really nice relationship. I don't think I seen many younger brothers in animes with a female lead that isn't a total toddler. Tomoko's voice is pretty good to listen to when she talks on for an extended period of time. Too bad most of the narrations even are so short. But once she gets the talking going, it flows really well. |

Eh, tails... I prefer when she has her hair normally, but she is huggable.
I honestly thought her cutest scene was the black and white still after his brother says the "Woah! Who is this freaking ugly chick?!" line. Quote:

Her conversations with him were really fantastic though. Her monologues as well are nice to listen to. Admittedly though, some of them do slur together a little bit. They have a really strange brother and sister relationship that kind of sells this for me a little bit. A strange dynamic where she's older but unpopular, and he's younger and popular. It's completely strange.

Err . . is this supposed to be funny? Our female lead's antics hardly made me laugh and at best, i just chuckled. It doesn't help that she delivered her inner monologue in rather bland and bleak tone for the most part, leaving me cringed instead of laughed. It's thanks to her brother and his extreme bluntness and cruel talk that saved this eps for me.
Oh and i'm calling it now. This show has the best OP song of the season! |

I see now why a lot of people were looking forward to this anime The main character is just plain crazy XD She's the definition of obsessed I like that in this anime it's actually showing how she struggles to not only make friends, but to even talk to people. Usually anime has the same scenario of having a character that is alone, but by the end of the episode they had joined a club or made a friend. It looks like it's going to take more than one episode for this main character lol
She's so innocently cute at times and I feel sorry for her a lot of the times XD

Best thing about the first episode was the duckface, that actually made her much uglier. I always hated it, can't believe there are people who think it's a cute thing to do.
Oh and i love how she kept saying she needs to "recover her old conversation skills". |

This show is straight-up, the truth, no sugar-coating here. Just watching the social ineptness was painful, but there's something about seeing someone in a humiliating situation that's intriguing. I'm laughing and relating at how sad Tomoko is, it's almost like this show is made for the sadistic sides of people. Other shows have painful moments, but when it's the entire subject matter, it's a refreshing premise I haven't seen.
I find Tomoko's looks interesting from the creator's standpoint, on one hand they need her to be ugly to match the premise. But then the target demographic and genre, would suggest that the main heroine always needs to be cute and pretty. I think her looks strike a perfect balance for her role, not ugly enough to be a distraction, but not so cute I'm in disbelief about her not being popular. There's actually nothing wrong with the geometry of her face, it's just those bags under her eyes, even on Middle-aged characters in anime these days, they have near perfect skin. Looks like a solid anime to watch this season. |
