The first season aired on Saturday morning in a kids timeslot, and was sponsored by major companies like McDonald's, Proctor & Gamble, and others. It was also animated by a company that typically works on those sorts of long-running shows. The second season airs past midnight and is being sponsored only by the TV station and anime merchandising companies. It's being animated by a company that specializes in these sorts of late-night shows, and generally only produces works up to 26-episodes at a time. For this new season, their main way of making their money back is through DVD/Blu-Ray and other merchandise sales, so it's too risky to produce 52 episodes at once. But if the show sells well, there's no question that they could come back and do another season in a year or two. So, anyway, that's the gist of the reason. Different sort of show with a different production structure means a different episode count. Not that it was really all that important, but now you know. |

I'm slightly worried about its sale numbers, to be honest. It use to come out every 2 months, then every 3, and then every 4. It now seems to be every 6 months, and it's not like we're even close to the Japanese releases to warrant a slowed release.

That said, I'm sure it's not the best selling title. A lot of bookstores don't even stock it. |

I just checked this. There's always been a three-month gap between volumes (never two), except for one four-month gap between 13 and 14. That gap included December as well, so apparently releases just slow down around the end of the year.
What's the source for 17's release date, anyway?

I'd be nice if Viz sped things up a little, but it's really not their style, outside of maybe One Piece and Naruto. Even Bleach is almost two years behind, from what I've heard. (Don't read it, myself.) |
