I just watched the OAD! In one word: WOOWWW.
Yes, yes, art, music, animation, all fine - I really like Kumota Haruko's art and I think the anime did it justice, and the direction was also OK, nothing esoteric or too individualistic, but that's good. They cut and pasted and mixed and reworked the manga but that was to be expected and it also worked so it's all good... but but but the seiyuu cast. This show is one that depends, more than anything, on the seiyuu, and wow they're just so good. Awesome casting. I think I'll watch it again so I can roll around in it some more. I mean, there was the Dekigokoro performance. To their credit they did it all (as far as I'm aware, I'm no rakugo expert), and every now and then the director tried to do something to make the performance not visually static - there were some nice shots, cuts and angles (I really liked those where it seemed that there were more than one Yota on stage, to express how he's playing different characters). But even so this completely depended Seki Tomokazu carrying the entire scene, on his own, being authentic but also playing Yota playing many roles, keeping the viewers' interest and making them feel the effect he had on his ex-boss... And he did it and he was so awesome. If there was an Oscar for seiyuu he could be declared this year's winner right now. And Ishida Akira is great as Yakumo, it's always so good to hear him flex his "muscles", so to speak. Too bad we didn't see his full performance (probably will not, either, these pieces are too long for that), but what we've heard was also really good. They've released it as a Japan-only subscription extra so hopefully it'll resurface somewhere, somehow. I want to hear it~~~ Ahem... (My only disappointment is that Yota's aniki wasn't played by Suwabe Junichi. Not that there was anything wrong with the guy who played him, but this is such a Suwabe Junichi character. I kept hearing his voice as I was reading this chapter in the manga.) Squeeing aside, this was basically the entire first volume condensed into 50 minutes... so what will the TV anime do? Leave this out? Or they'll recut this into TV-sized parts? (I guess they'll heavily cut Yota's performance, it's almost an episode long in itself.) But they also left out a bunch of stories from volume 1, will those be in the TV series? When will it air, anyway? |

And the second OVA is getting released around now... From the preview it seems they'll do the story right until the flashback arc, which makes me wonder just what we're going to have in the TV series. The flashback arc? (I hope not, three volumes were enough of that.)
In the meanwhile the manga took a direction that I'm not very happy with, but oh well, maybe I'll enjoy it more in the animated version. |

Apparently, it will premiere on MBS' "Animeism" programming block in January.

So, first episode is going to be 1 hour SP (special), it seems the story adapts the 2 OVA and the actual series starts from next week's episode. |

Edit: Looks like I might be wrong.
Crunchyroll and many other sites I've checked branded as episode 1. Watched it with all 47 minutes. A bit unusual for the pilot episode: Good stuff for the premiere. I like Yotaro already for his ability to connect with the audience. At first, he struggled a bit but I think he grew confidence as time went on and he has the "it factor" if keeps up the momentum. The girl is also a tomboy and I like her role in this show already. The josei atmosphere is also nice to embrace. Dark horse of the season, calling it now.

Wow, they squeezed the two OVAs into ~50 minutes... I'm not sure how I feel about it, at least they showed most of the two main performances so that's good, but on the other hand they cut a lot of small things which made the story's flow pretty choppy. :/ And they cut out the part about Yota's tattoo... I wonder why, it's going to be somewhat important later on.
But more importantly - they're jumping into the flashback! Right away! I'm so disappointed. :/ There are some pretty good chapters that could've been adapted, to flesh out the relationship between Yota & Yakumo & Konatsu, but no... it's time for the Yakumo & Sukeroku love story. At least this means that we'll probably see the end of the main story, since they'll have to fill up the rest of the episodes after the flashback ends. I'm not sure how I feel about that, though, since that's where the story started to turn into something I wasn't that enthusiastic about. Anyway, all that aside, this was basically the Seki Tomokazu and Ishida Akira Show guest starring Kobayashi Yuu, and on that front I've no complaints whatsoever, I've enthused about them enough times in this topic... They're so awesome! And at least in a few weeks we're going to get Yamadera Kouichi, too. |

Dark horse for most. I am elated that it exceeded my expectations. An excellent starting episode. It drew me in and time just went by so fast. It felt shorter than most of the first episodes of this season's new shows. Especially when it's 47 minutes - double of the rest.
Really looking forward to the rest of this show. |

Wow. That was marvellous.
I'd had hopes for this show, partly because of the period setting, partly because of the unusual subject matter, and partly because it's really good to get a show that's different from the usual fare. I was not disappointed. It was really good. I even laughed during the story Yotaro told when his 'Aniki' was in the audience, and I know humour is one of those things that doesn't always travel well. So looking forward to the rest of the series to see how it goes. |
