The problem here I think is that the series is bringing in something that actually happened much later (after they got out of Zagan in fact), which makes Alibaba seem a lot more serious that he actually was in the equivalent manga chapters. It's a directorial choice I understand to give the anime a much better conclusion, but for manga readers it's kind of jarring.

I think that's always a problem with knowing about the source, especially since Magi's manga is a very stand-out shounen series. There are serious parts, for sure, but even then the series never loses the goofball comedy, and knows how to pace itself in that regard.
Spoiler for Comparison:

This week's episode was good, probably the best since ep10 and 17. Looks like there was budget at long last and the fights looked nicely done. If only the episodes were more like this. Everyone's moments were handled well, Hakuryu's character and umm, quirk was conveyed and hopefully from the looks of it the Alibaba angst has been dealt with. A good start to the Zagan dungeon arc.

The problem is, Alibaba was presented as the shining example of tolerance in the manga, not judging or even caring about where Hakuryuu came from, which is why Hakuryuu is humbled. The anime is basically doing a 180 on Alibaba's personality and role, which source fans are finding to be annoying.
Not to mention the snake bite issue.

Pleasantly surprised by how great the art quality and animation was for episode 21. The episode mostly didn't include any of the random original anime stuff, too, so that was nice. Hakuryuu's outburst at the end was absolutely hilarious -- probably laughed more than when I originally read it in the manga due to the voice acting + animation. Looking forward to the rest of the arc now that the first bit was done so well.

At least they keep Hakuryuu's scene true to source material. I thought they will cut it just like what they did with the scene of fat Aladdin and fat Alibaba -.-.

The new dungeon kinda looked like Wonderland.
Those turtles and other creatures were pretty funny. They weren't dangerous, just mostly annoying. The fights with the more challenging opponents were pretty nice. Prince turned out to be big crybaby, but at least he was trying to be better.
