Appareranman

Quote:
The story is set at the end of the 19th century and on the eve of the next one. After a certain mishap, the brilliant but socially inept engineer Sorano Apare (family name first) and the shrewd but cowardly samurai Isshiki Kosame find themselves drifting on a boat from Japan to America. Broke, the two decide to compete in the Trans-America Wild Race to win the prize and return to Japan. The two start at Los Angeles on the west coast and take on crazy rivals as they make their way through the wild West to the finish line in New York — in the steam-powered car they built.

The first episode was rather unremarkable (save for the ridiculous design of Appare), but it should get good once we get to the actual race.

Are we supposed to want to see Appare dead? What if someone had been standing in that garden when he plowed through it?

Watched the first episode. it was okay but I haven't found much interest in it.
Most of the characters are actually rather irritating to me. Appare was downright infuriating and I just wanted someone to beat the crap out of him the entire time.
And his appearance, more than any other zany character is just so jarring. Especially seeing everyone else in Japan dressed pretty traditionally. He's like a male, Japanese Pippi Longstocking.

The samurai guy (can't really remember his name honestly) was so wimpy, he annoyed me too.

I'm not even sure if I'll see the next episode, but I didn't did much to like here.

I wonder if someone will turn into a dinosaur.

Okay now that the obligatory Steel Ball Run reference is out of the way. I really want to like this, but the two main characters are making it hard for me. Hopefully the rest of the cast will be interesting.

I want to believe, but honestly it feels like it's going to be yet another dud from PA Works.

I thought it was more interesting than I expected, but then my expectations weren't that high.

I thought they dispensed with the trip across the Pacific much too quickly. Oh, and do either of them have any money? Who paid for the steamship portion of their travels?

Oh, and what about English? I saw no evidence either Japanese guy knows English.

I thought P.A. Works generally did a fine job here. The scene with all the ships was pretty impressive, and many of the backgrounds were quite detailed. My biggest problem is with Appare's character model. Was his mouth cut by a sword on each side leaving those scars? I find his appearance so annoying that it makes me want to stop watching.

I remember seeing this show mentioned among coming attractions some months ago, and I found the premise intriguing. I've always enjoyed watching anime shows set in America like Baccano! and Uchuu Kyoudai to see how we are viewed by Japanese creators. I'm still in with Appare-Ranman! for the moment assuming I can deal with Appare's mouth.

It's implied Kosame worked for it.

Maybe Appare does? He was talking with the steamship crew. Maybe reading their books.

Isn't it just makeup?

Appare can clearly read English as his favorite book is an English copy of 'From the earth to the moon.' They were also on the ship for at least a week so Kosame may have picked up a bit if he didn't know any before. He at least knows some as he exclaims "Oh my God" in English upon seeing LA.

Appare seems to model his look off of Kabuki makeup the red spots to me at least imply tusks so it might be an oni design.

You reminded me that there was a scene with Kosame swabbing decks. Still it's unlikely he earned enough for them to be able to buy food and lodging in Los Angeles.

The code of the sea (now codified by the UNHCR) is that a captain has an obligation to rescue anyone in distress at sea, irrespective of their circumstances. He wasn't going to say "I'll save you, but how will you pay?" Anything after that is fair game, but paying for their passage (and I agree, there was clearly deck-swabbing involved) wasn't really going to be a factor.

I thought of Seijisensei while watching the episode. The writers clearly don't give a shit about the language barrier, Appare and Kosame alike understand English perfectly. And the captain of the ship did mention he'd usually have them pay a fare.

The part with the Chinese girl made me think I was watching the new episode of Arte a day early.
