The Maria/Rosa scene was awkwardly placed in this episode, no?

Mh~ I wouldn't say awkwardly placed but the transmission wasn't really good.

Who thinks that George seems to be more worried than sad after most likely having received news from Gohda and Kumasawa that both his parents are possibly dead?

Well Shannon is still being kept hostage, so being worried is understandable.

I figured Gaap was due to show up this episode. Oddly, they still haven't tweaked the opening to include her.

Here's hoping we see a grand new opening next week.

I'm guessing this is the last OP... all characters left out of it will probably remain left out until next season.

Given the sheer amount of Umineko characters, they don't have to include all of them imo.

I've always been more of a fan of the game opening. Even without animation, the sequences and how it matched the music impressed me. The OP managed to fit in almost every character somehow, and you could tell that a lot of effort was put into each one.

In comparison... the anime OP seems lazy to me.

You have to keep in mind that for an anime opening there is motion involved, it's not just some stills floating by setting in at the right moment.
No offense against the VN's openings, they were great in their regards...but they were just stills being timed quite perfectly (with some basic animation cut in).
If they had pulled the same stunt with the anime's opening people would be rioting just the same about DEEN being to lazy to animate something, being cheap as always, yadda yadda yadda...

But I also think that it would have worked better if they either did another opening, which might be impossible, as I don't know their budget, or if they had just made the opening a bit less Episode 3 specific.
Yet everyone was saying the same about Episode 4's VN opening being not specific enough...so maybe it just runs along...

The OP lacks a lot of actual animation anyway...

I would say about 80% of the anime OP includes some animation.

I don't see why people are so demanding about his. Higurashi season 1 didn't change its OP once, and Higurashi Kai only changed very slightly ... nobody complained about that.

Higurashi Kai's opening only changed because of that incident right? They weren't allowed to include the cleaver anymore or something?

I don't think so. From what I remember, it's just a very minor alteration regarding the story.

A lot of it is just special effects though. Golden butterflies, clocks, still images of Ronove, Siestas, Stakes, the parents, Jessica, George, Shannon, Kanon. There are some well done scenes inserted in like VirgiliaVSBeatrice, Eva-Beatrice, and Ange falling... though those scenes (or at least VirgiliaVSBeatrice and Eva-Beatrice) don't suit EP4 and timing wise, the Ange falling part feels a little awkward to me. It comes in at a part of the song that doesn't match very well for me. All together it's like a mesh between lazy still images and well done animation done in a strange fashion that makes the OP animation overall seem like a bit of a mess to me.

The amount of characters made it easier for them to animate and sequences matched the music perfectly for both seasons (Higurashi Rei was a bit more simple with the OP...). Also in the case of Higurashi, there was no game OP to compare to anyway...
