Not an easy question is it? Until we have such a defination, it's completely subjective, limited only by what a prosecutor can sell the judge and jury on. Further, there will always be people trying to push the line in both directions. In light of that, one needs to ask the question of whether the line should be there at all.

Well, calling a loli character cute or beautiful is just fine. I'm not talking about being a loli or shota fan, but lolicon and shotacon in the pornographic sense. I like loli and shota characters, but I'm talking about the porn. And some people like it and are fine. If you like it, that is fine. What you quoted, I specifically said some people get twisted in their thinking from that kind of stuff. I'm not bearing a torch or gathering a mob and I know there are fans of this stuff that are level headed. But I do think it corrupts some individuals. So, I don't crusade against the stuff, but I'm not an advocate for it, either. And even though I'm not fond of it, I'd rather not see people in the west crusade against it, as I said. They'd make a mess out of it all (once again, as discussed). So no hard feelings, I didn't want to be misunderstood on this. : )

Sorry, I'm just touchy about the topic because the fandom has a large contingent of immature sorts that are so uncomfortable with "cute" or "adorable" that they hurl epithets at anything that doesn't fit their notions of what people should watch. Some forums routinely diss perfectly innocuous and enjoyable series, often setting me to wonder about their mental goblins.
No, I don't care for "loli hentai"... or most "hentai" for that matter. Its silly, often obnoxious, or boring. Now compelling stories that have sexual tension or perhaps emotional awakenings, realized romance? Sure.

I understand being defensive with the unreasonable people. I could see some defensiveness, I just felt the need to clarify things and communicate more clearly. : ) Actually, upon re-reading the OP, there is no 'threat' of some people in the west rallying against anything loli, anyway. It'd only come up if some guy obsessed with lolicon hentai went and commited a heinous crime in the US. Then we'd see certain groups and the mass media condemn all anime. x_x Let's hope such things don't ever occur. And actually, that is how the negative otaku image started in Japan, come to think of it.

I used to know someone who is also from germany. He was an otaku and had a massive lolita complex. He used to show me pictures from various anime lolis and while talking, be became more and more mind-twisted... a different person. Sometimes, he talked about real children and stuff and started to act funny, once something "spilled over". Wonder what kind of person he became.
He was no actual pervert... It wasn't perversion from my view. It was some kind of sickness. I hated this. It was more pschological. Probably a mental illness, cause by some events from his childhood. It seemed as he had a difficult one. Well... Lolis in anime are very cute, indeed, but I can't accept people, which gain sexual desires for lolis, or even children... I could directly punch them, even without being a violent person at all. I just wanted to tell, that we also got these kind of persons here in germany. Not as much as in japan, but still. |

I might be stating the obvious here, but...
"Lolicon" is popular, under wraps. You go to any imageboard, and you'll see pages upon pages of english fans. You have to know about it, first, then give some effort in looking, and magically it's a wide open resource for you. I know I'm putting it strangely, but it's true. A rough guesstimation is that about 80% of anime fans know about loli, and I wouldn't be surprised if 65% of those 80% enjoy it. I could be completely wrong but sometimes it feels that way. What is lolicon? It would be pointless to define it by words, I think. No matter which way you put it, the masses would still highly disapprove because of its shock implications. The best way to define it is to browse just about any imageboard that hosts it. |

@Hiraishin: Actually... no, because that invariably devolves into a flame war between different factions of "what it is". I suggest hitting the Wikipedia for a somewhat neutral definition and checking for Western versusu Japanese meanings. Like "otaku" -- the word's meaning means terribly different things depending on your slice of the pie.
There's a substantial difference in how people perceive the term "loli" versus "lolicon", for example.

The Miller test is so vague that it's practically useless.

It's not like most pedophiles are dangerous. Hell, only 5% of child molestation crimes are committed by actual pedophiles. The attraction itself is harmless, and only poses a danger once it's put into practice, but that can be applied to any fetish. Liking women can lead to rape. Liking men could lead to rape. Liking feet can lead to chopping someone's feet off. Liking vore can lead to cannibalism. I can go on, but they're all just slippery slopes that slide down into a worst-case scenario. |
